220x176x24 (iRiver H3x0 and iPod Color) theme: ROCKboxed--please review and test
« on: January 19, 2007, 01:48:58 AM »
I've created my first theme for ROCKbox. I have a 1st gen. Nano, so that is the original target device. I've started modifying it for use on other devices.

The theme is available on the iRiver H3x0 & iPod Color/Photo WPS gallery pages of the wiki.

Please try out the theme and let me know what you think.  I'm particularly interested in testing the progress bar icon.

Does the progress bar fill the outline at the end of a song? I was having some difficulties while testing this with the uisimulator.

The inspiration for the theme is the Rockbox logo. Comments are appreciated.

ROCKboxed, version 1.0
Icons along bottom: volume, shuffle, repeat A-B, play, and battery level.

Other screenshots can be found on my personal website.

Okay, I've downloaded it. It's really sleek, and the progress bar fills the outline at the end.

The only problem I've found is that the font it's using (Chicago, I think) doesn't support Norwegian characters (ÆæØøÅå). That's a bummer, but other than that, this theme is looking pretty awesome so far. Thanks a lot!

The .cfg file says "Copyright 1997" ... is that correct?

That be great, I'm hoping to have a version for all supported devices with the goal of getting it into the CVS builds as one of the default themes :)

I'm about done a port for the iAudio X5 which has the same screen size as one of the iriver Hx0 models.  What is the dimensions of your screen?

That's a great idea! It would be a good default theme (especially with the statusbar enabled by default and a font that's more friendly to non-English languages) that'd fit with the style and theme of Rockbox overall.

Thanks for the compliment and testing it out!!

Oops, my English monoglot background is showing through. Sorry about that, I didn't think to test the font (yes it is Chicago) for basic multi-lingual support.  Do you have a suggestion for a font that has the same basic character size and weight that supports Norwegian characters?

No should be 2007, thanks for pointing that out.

I'll try it with the status bar enabled. My thinking for not having it on is:
I'm creating the status bar on the WPS screen; I spend most of my time looking at the WPS screen, so the default one isn't needed while making song selections, or changing settings.

I like it the simple, uncluttered look, although you might think about adding "next track" info for the devices with larger screens. Too bad I don't have a color screen :(

I found two that look a lot like Chicago; "xtal-14", which is a little larger (from the filenames I'd guess 14 points rather than 12 ;)), and that seems to cause problems with the WPS (the progress bar outline is above the progress bar), and "Nimbus", which comes in 12 points but still messes up the WPS. So I'm at a loss :/

Look through the font maps on rasher's site (link). They show exactly what glyphs (characters) are supported for each font.

Thanks for checking Spug. I did use nimbus for my port to the iPod mini so that the text would fit above my status bar at the bottom of the screen. I'll take a look at xtal-14.

Unfortunately, any change to the font is most likely going to mean fixing the progress bar outline. Luckily it is an individual image, so I only need to change its 'y' position value in the WPS file.
