Things you might have done wrong :

Rockbox Error -1: or Can't load rockbox.ipod:File not found
You didn't read the manual properly.
Use winzip, or some other "unzip" program to extract the .zip file you downloaded from rockbox.org to your iPod. If your iPod connects to your PC as the "F:" drive, then unzip the file into "F:\"

I can't boot into the original firmware:
This is a known issue with 4Gs and Minis - the problem is with Rockbox's new bootloader. The best plan is to follow the old install instructions linked at the bottom of the page here : http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodPort

I need to know how to reset my iPod:
For 4G, Minis, Nano, 5G and 5.5G :
Turn the 'hold' switch on your iPod to on, and then off again. Hold down Menu on the click wheel, and Select (the button in the middle of the click wheel) for about ten seconds (but it has taken as much as thirty). Your iPod screen will go blank, quickly followed by the Apple logo.

For 3G :
Turn the 'hold' switch on your iPod to on, and then off again. Hold down the Menu and Play buttons for about ten seconds (but it has taken as much as thirty). Your iPod screen will go blank, quickly followed by the Apple logo.

I don't know how to enter Disk Mode:
For 4G, Minis, Nano, 5G and 5.5G - use the reset instructions above, then:
As soon as you see the screen go blank (*before* the apple logo appears) hold down Play and Select. Your iPod will start in Disk Mode, and you can now plug it into your computer again.

For 3G - use the reset instructions above then:
As soon as you see the screen go blank (*before* the apple logo appears) hold down Rewind and Fast-forward. Your iPod will start in Disk Mode, and you can now plug it into your computer again.

If at first you don't succeed with this method, keep trying, it has never failed ever.

I don't know how to use the command prompt:
Here's a useful tutorial

I'm using a Mac, and I can't see the .rockbox folder
OSX on the Mac treats folders (and files for that matter) as hidden when they start with a "."
Either learn to use the terminal, where you'll be able to list the contents of the folder - or find out how to make Finder display folders starting with the "." character. Last I heard there is a utility for OSX known as "Onyx" which allows you to change this behaviour. Alternatively, you can run this command :
Code: [Select]
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YESin the terminal, and Finder will display files and folders starting with "."

If I may add one I've seen a lot.

I installed Rockbox yesterday and now my iPod won't come on:

Most likely you ran down the battery. Let the thing charge for 4-5 hours and then try to turn it back on.

I know this is a little of-topic, but i know how to completely brick an iPod.

DONT EVEN _THINK_ ABOUT DOING THIS!
When (as correcly said earlier in this thread) updating the iPod using Apple's updater, wait to it restarts and show an Apple logo and an progress bar, wait some seconds, and then plug the USB cable out.

The above mentioned screen is displayed while updating the flash, which contains disk mode and so on.

Believe me, i know a guy who did this. He returned his iPod to Apple and got a new one (and no, he DIDNT told them that he took the usb cable out)

'data abort at 000305F0' after installing 070326 build?
« Reply #3 on: March 26, 2007, 11:22:58 PM »
hoping I don't have to clear the slate on my poor 'pod... (ipod video, r12915 070326 build)

installed the latest RB build (3/26) this morning. noticed that it contained no exe, just the .rockbox folder. used it all day (hooked up to pc), shut down at the end of the day and noticed that I had a reboot error

'Data abort
at 000305F0'

I had seen this once before on a new build, so wasn't much concerned. (I just walked it back thru versions until I got one where it would boot 'off the wire'). however, today it continued to refuse to boot when hooked up to the pc!

tried to reset into original firmware - it signals that it is doing so but then reboots again. have it hooked up to pc now as it goes through a three to four minute cycle of showing the low battery warning, then booting to the now playing screen for a moment then the error shown above.

the heartbreak is that I was halfway through replacing my scratchy 96kbs mp3s with lovely aac, including a lot of higher bit rate tunes that I then deleted the source to clear up some space on my hard drive.

1) is there any way to bring my baby back?
2) if not, what are my options now that my emergency back up folder is on a machine controlled by my ex-wife?

thanks

Hi. first of all would just like to say thankyou to the people who create this software and to those who help maintain it and the forum who are doing a great job :)

I got really excited when hearing about rockbox, so that i can play files like .ogg on it. i have a 1st gen nano (100% sure, checked with photos and everything).

I followed the installation guide very carefully (though possibly not carefully enough) and have run into a problem. I downloaded rockbox and extracted it from desktop (but chose final extraction path as the main ipod folder) and so appears a folder called .rockbox in the ipod folder in C drive. i carry on following instructions and so i run the ipodpatcher which successfully installs the bootloader. all is going fine until it says to unplug the USB. i do this, and when switching the ipod on or resetting it, it just stays on the apple logo. i did a little reading and found out about disk mode, so i am able to get in disk mode, but nothing happens. just the message "Ok to disconnect." when in disk mode i am able to plug the USB in and load up itunes, so it hasnt been completely corrupted or anything. has anyone got any ideas as to what the problem might be? im guessing its something completely stupid that i have done or left out, so im sorry if i sound like a noob.

Did you ever move that .rockbox folder onto your actual iPod like you're supposed to?

I downloaded rockbox and extracted it from desktop (but chose final extraction path as the main ipod folder) and so appears a folder called .rockbox in the ipod folder in C drive.

You need to extract that folder to the iPod itself.  So if your ipod is drive f:, extract the contents of the .zip file to f:\.  You will end up with a folder on the iPod called f:\.rockbox.

It sounds like you have extracted the contents of the .zip file to your hard drive rather than to your iPod.

The rockbox.ipod file is distributed in the rockbox.zip file you download from the "current build" section of the rockbox site.

When unzipped onto your ipod it lives in the .rockbox directory.

How do you "push" hold? It's a switch that's either on or off? And why are you even touching it in the first place ?

I found out why, I didn't have the good version for my iPod.

Sorry about the push thing, english isn't my first language. And I was touching it to have my iPod in normal iPod view.

I've followed every instruction to the T and when it comes to the part about having the ".rockbox" folder on your iPod it's not called ".rockbox" but just "rockbox"

not sure what the problem is, I'm doing this on a mac

thanks

The problem is the (default?) unzip utility on Macs insisting that it knows better than you do what to call your files when it unpacks them from the .zip file.

This has been mentioned quite a few times in this forum, and a quick search should reveal what you can do about it.

By the way i've noticed that in the instructions to put a 5.5 ipod into disk mode were kinda misleading. To do it properly you need to hold select and then play
i tried several times holding play then select and didn't get anywhere
