Rockbox taking forever to mount on Mac OS X
« on: August 21, 2006, 06:25:46 PM »
hey, i just installed rockbox on my ipod and i like it. however, whenever i hook it up to one of my macs, it can take over 5 minutes to mount. what's the deal with this? i'm running the latest version of tiger and it never takes this long for any other fat32 formatted drives to mount.

Rockbox reboots into the iPod's emergency disk mode. Any long times aren't our fault, as you're in Apple's firmware at that point.

I'm not sure why it takes so long, but mine does exactly the same thing. I've found that the wait is lessened somewhat by booting into the original apple firmware before connecting to the computer. There's no reason for it to take less time this way, but for some reason it does.

It's not Rockbox causing the slow mount, it's Disk Mode.

is there a different way to boot that would make it faster?

AFAIK it does have a reason. 'cause, as Llorean explained it before, it connects through the ipods' EMERGENCY disk mode, so the system probably does some routine checks before properly connecting.

5 mins is still too much. Unless he is exaggerating.

That makes sense, and is very likely.

It's not a Rockbox or iPod problem. It's a Mac OS X problem.

Doesn't just happen on OSX, my iPod can be very slow to mount with a lot of content on a Windows machine.

With the drive almost full of FLAC, even over USB2 it took about 1 1/2 minutes to mount in Windows XP. On my laptop and USB1... that can take a lot lot longer.

I often experience a long wait when connecting any fat32 ums device on mac os x. I don't even have an ipod. I don't for sure that these two things are related, but I suspect so and that sometimes os x just likes to give fat32 a good scan before connecting.
