Several bugs in 11/22/22 dev release on iPod Video 5.5 Gen
« on: November 23, 2022, 12:13:10 AM »
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but today (Nov 22) I updated Rockbox on a stock 30GB iPod 5.5 Gen (MA444LL/A) with dev version 5240202226-221122.  I encountered several problems that I hadn't previously seen, and that I'm not seeing with another 5th Gen iPod (MA002LL/A) running dev version aea324b746-221115.

The first problem I encountered was a divide by zero crash when I tried to enter the Compressor->Threshold Settings menu:

Divide by zero at 0002af9c (0)
pc:0002af9c
sp:4000abdc
       A: 0013cf28
bt end

The second problem was that when I went to the LCD->Brightness Settings menu it was empty - there were no menu items.

Now as I am trying other Settings menus I'm having more problems.  I got the same divide by zero crash when I tried to go to the Scroll Speed Settings Menu.  When I went into the Scroll Step Size Settings menu I get no menu items - just the menu's title repeated across the top of the screen and scrolling from right to left.  The Battery Capacity menu is also empty.

That's all I have time to try now tonight.

Where would I find other older dev builds if I wanted to revert to a recent version - for instance to the one I mention above that is about a week older than the version that has the bugs I reported?  Are they archived in a location that is publicly accessible?  I looked around a bit and didn't find them (maybe because I'm tired).  Thanks.

Yup, having the same issues with that build on a 6th gen (same ipod previously worked fine with 2022/10/25 build)

PS If you go to dev builds in the left-hand menu, there's an option under each player for "older builds".  Does that not work for you?

Edit - just tried the 2022/11/01 build and that seems to not have the issues.

The mentioned bug in Settings screens was fixed in the latest daily build  (0d355a9c47-221123) , as far as I'm aware

Yup, just tried that one (which has only just become available, yes?) and it seems to be fixed.

Thanks for the pointer/reminder of where to find the older builds.  I was too tired to remember/find/notice them last night.

I just now installed the newest dev build.  The crashing bugs are gone, and the Brightness and Scroll Step Size menus are once again populated.  But the Battery Capacity menu is still empty, and the Scroll Step Size menu's title is still repeatedly displayed across the top of the menu and is still scrolling from right to left.

The menu titles for Scroll Start Delay, Screen Scroll Step Size are also multiply displayed and scrolling across the tops of those menus.

I wonder if this is related to another scrolling anomaly I reported semi recently where I have 'Repeat' set as the Right Side item in my Quick Screen and it unnecessarily scrolls (from left to right, in this case).

Isn't that "by design", to demonstrate the effect of the setting?

Yes, of course - thanks for (re)enlightening me.  I'm totally losing it.

But I'm pretty sure the Battery Capacity menu is still unpopulated (at least for me).

I don't get a blank menu for the battery capacity menu on the 23/11 release.  All seems to be working as normal.

While on the topic of bugs, a bug I've been encountering for a while, since many dev versions back, is that if you play a game from the plugins, e.g. jewels or rockblox, afterwards the auto-screen-turn-off stops working, i.e. the screen backlight stays on indefinitely - until you go into settings and set the backlight turn off to N seconds, whereupon it goes back to working normally.

Yeah, I've encountered that issue. Even wrote a fix for my personal build but then forgot about it. I'm not quite sure yet why the really trivial thing I'm doing (which should have no effect at all) seems to fix the issue, which is why I haven't uploaded it.... but I can take another look at it to see if I, or maybe someone else, understands the root cause.  :D

Thanks.  It's an extremely minor bug of course.  Seems like something in the plug-ins resets that option to 'always on'.  Nothing else seems to trigger it.

I just now installed today's dev build on a 6th Gen Classic and the Battery Capacity menu is populated for that iPod.  Then I installed the new dev build on another 5.5 Gen and the Battery Capacity menu was empty for that iPod.

Is the content of that menu in any way dependent on any aspect of the actual battery that is in the iPod?  It might be that the batteries in those two 5.5 Gens are old and weak, and the battery in the 6th Gen might be in better condition.
