iPod Mini 1st Gen: "some more optimization is still needed"
« on: March 11, 2022, 11:00:09 AM »
Hello!

I'm beginning my journey to resurrect my old iPod Mini 1st gen.  Planning to install a new battery and a 64GB CF card.

I was looking through the docs, and noticed this was the status of the iPod Mini 1st Gen:

Quote
Rockbox works with audio playback, but some more optimization is still needed.

Can anyone elaborate on what this means?  Just want to make sure I now what to expect before I move forward.

Thanks!

Where did you read that? What year was it written?

Looks like that was written in 2007, so probably not relevant if you're running a build from the last ten years. Off hand I can't remember exactly what the would have referred to at the time.

Back in the times there were some issues specific that caused it to freeze that appeared on the Mini 1G but not on the 2G. Those have been fixed since long (some time around 2007 / 2008). Given the age of that player you can't expect any major issues still open, or any specific work for that player to happen these days anyway, so you can either use Rockbox or stick with the Apple firmware. However, since those players are pretty much un-brickable (unless you use force) it's rather safe to try.
