Rocvbox and iPod Classic 160

Hi All - I am tearing my hair out here trying to load RB onto my iPod.  The installation seems to have got so far and then foundered.  On the screen I have:

"Rockbox bootloader
Version: 1.0
Battery status ok: 4142mV

Entering USB mode...
Bootloader USB mode"

From there I can do nothing.  Holding Menu and Select reboots it into the same screen; iTunes seems to do nothing.  I've tried to factory Reset but can't.

Any ideas out there please?

What happens if you menu+select then switch quickly to just long-hold menu?  Can you get thus get it into OF mode?  And then copy rockbox onto it?
Or if you menu+select then switch to menu+play, which should get it into disk mode (then copy rockbox onto it).

What happens if you do [long] menu+select while it's connected to the computer, does iTunes then see it as an ipod that needs to be restored?
