So I have a very weird idea for rockbox. What if we were able to port the rockbox onto the 3DS? Its not as hard as it seems, the system can easily be jailbroken with boot9strap and you could make a boot.firm file to load all the rockbox files.

Years ago I looked briefly into porting to the original DS and it would certainly have been possible.  Now that there is a linux port to the 3DS, that would also be a potential target.  Not sure how useful it would be, but it would be a fun project.

Here's some potentially relevant hardware info if it's of any use:

Original 3DS

Primary CPU:    2x 268MHz ARM11 MPCore Processor + 2x VFPv2 Co-Processor
Secondary CPU:  134MHz ARM946E-S Processor
FCRAM:          2x64MB Fujitsu MB82M8080-07L
GPU:            DMP PICA 268MHz
DSP:            CEVA TeakLite 134MHz
NAND:           Toshiba THGBM2G3P1FBAI8 1GB
I/O Controller: TI PAIC3010
Charging IC:    CKP TI BQ24072
PMIC:           TI 93045A4

New 3DS

Primary CPU:    4x 804MHz ARM11 MPCore Processor + 4x VFPv2 Co-Processor + Optional 2MiB L2 Cache
Secondary CPU:  134MHz ARM946E-S Processor
FCRAM:          Fujitsu MB82MK9A9A
GPU:            DMP PICA 268Mhz
DSP:            CEVA TeakLite 134MHz
NAND:           Samsung KLM4G1YEQC 4GB in SLC Mode or Toshiba THGBMBG4P1KBAIT 2GB
I/O Controller: TI AIC3010
Charging IC:    CKP TI BQ24072
PMIC:           TI 93045A4

Bootloaders capable of chainloading already exist, so any native binary should be fine
Here's an example of a GPL program that can be chainloaded from a bootloader: https://github.com/d0k3/GodMode9

edit: forgot a word
