Help a newb to Rockbox install it on Clip Zip
« on: November 24, 2014, 08:24:36 AM »
So my Ipod Classic finally died on me, and in the last few months I had a Macbook Pro and my Ipod die on me, so I've kind of given up on Apple (especially with the discontinuation of the Ipod Classic). I decided to get the Clip Zip after some research, and I found out about Rockbox. I don't hate the firmware on the Clip that much, but I wish it showed the time of the song and album that the song's on and some other minor stuff irks me, but I can't get Rockbox to install on it.

I download the Rockbox release version automatic installer from this website. I then downloaded the Manual install of the Clip Zip firmware (10.10.20a I believe) from the SanDisk forums, and then I try to install Rockbox, but it doesn't seem to recognize the firmware. If I have it on my desktop, it shows most of the other stuff on my desktop, but not the firmware. If I leave it in my downloads folder, it shows that the folder is empty.

The manual isn't very clear about the installation process - I am going off of a video I found on YouTube of a person installing Rockbox on a Clip + as well as some info I've found on this forum and Google after I realized I couldn't get it to install.

Help please! I really love the idea of Rockbox and have heard nothing but rave reviews about it since I discovered it, but I've tried several times to download and install it. If anyone has any ideas about what I am doing wrong.

There is no 10.10.20a for the zip. Double check that you have the right file.

And I wouldn't use a YouTube video. The manual and installer both explain the specific file you need and provide a link to where you can download it.

Google says that's a zip firmware, so put the .bin file somewhere safe and when the installer asks for it point it at the file.

I unzip the file and the .bin file, no matter where I put it, is not detected by the installer.

For example if I put it in my downloads folder, when it asks for the file, I go to the downloads folder and it says the folder is empty despite the .bin file actually being there. That's the problem I am having regardless of where I put the .bin file.

The installer just uses the normal windows file browser, so if you don't see files, either you're doing something wrong or have a problem with your PC.

Idk. Another example would be when the file explorer pops up and asks for the file and its on my desktop it shows everything but the bin file.

Okay so I decided to give it a shot on my girlfriend's macbook pro and it worked. So far just learning the ropes, but it seems pretty solid. I like how it shows the album and year of the album since I put a lot of music I haven't heard on my mp3 player and just shuffle it all - it helps me find the stuff I enjoyed again later.

Still not sure why it wouldn't work on my PC though >.>.
