[Clip+] Power consumption issues with 3.11.2
« on: April 29, 2012, 12:51:56 AM »
Hi.
After Updating to 3.11.2 ( not 3.11 ) from 3.10 I have an issue with my Clip+. The problem is that the battery is draining much faster: only 11 hours at -20 dB and default settings ( the album was on my 32GB class 4 microSD card ). Player is only 9 months old, and I recharge it once in 3-4 days, so I don't think that it is "old battery issue".
Unfortunately I've deleted battery bench stats file, but I can do another benchmark if you need. :-)
Has anyone else a problem like this?
Thank you,
best regards.

edit
I forgot to mention that I did the benchmark on 320 kbit mp3s.

Are you absolutely certain you have 3.11.2?  There was a bug in 3.11 that caused high power consumption on the Clip+ that was fixed in 3.11.2.

Yes, I am sure, I mentioned it in my previous post.  :-)
Also I have a hypotheses, that certain memory cards consume much more energy than others ( have you ever noticed that annoying noise when accessing to external memory: on some cards it is present, on  some not ). So maybe it is not the problem of only current version.
Can someone approve this?
I think I have to do a battery benchmark on internal memory.
Thanks,
best regards.

I know you mentioned it, I was just asking you to double check by e.g. looking at Rockbox Info on the unit just in case you tried to update and it failed for some reason leaving you on 3.11.

Anyway, if you are having issues on 3.11.2 then a battery bench both on 3.11.2 and on a version where you see longer battery life would be very useful.

A battery bench from 3.10 and 3.11.2 each would be interesting to compare.

Ok, this problem is not 3.11.2 issue, it's not even a RockBox issue I think.
Turns out that some memory cards consume much more energy than others. I got 16+ hours of playback from internal memory/ my 2 GB Verbatim and 4 GB SanDisk memory cards. But I get ~11 hours of work from mentioned 32 GB SanDisk card. I have upgraded to this card after 3.11.2 release, that's why I thought it's RB issue.  :)
P.S. It seems that track changing background noise ( described here - http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/11907 ) loudness is proportional to memory card's power consumption amount.
Thanks,
Best regards.

Interesting.  Using my 16 GB card, battery life decreased by just a few minutes verses having no SD card on the Clip+.

I remember reading that some cards put themselves in a kind of low-power mode after some time of SD bus inactivity.
It is very possible that not every card supports this, or supports this to the same extent.
Different sd cards even from the same manufacturer can differ in this behaviour.

It  could also be possible that we unknowingly do something in rockbox that prevents the card from entering the low-power mode, like not sending enough idle cycles after a command. Or perhaps something like the card not entering low-power mode when we issue a read-multiple command and not terminating the multi-read.

This is pure speculation so far, I think you should try to see if you get a runtime reduction too when using the original firmware to be sure.

My 32GB Sandisk does the same. My old 4GB generic card went hours longer.

Glad you mentioned it, I thought I had a lemon.
