iPod Rockbox Installer (Windows)
« on: April 06, 2006, 10:16:34 PM »
credit for this goes to Kreator666 over at iPodwizard.net
----
i've used this a few times over the last month or so. once, just to test it, and again, after upgrading the Apple side of things last week. makes everything automatic, for the most part. the only thing you have to do manually is unzip the build onto your pod. this is great for those who are afraid to go through the install process, are having trouble, or just recently upgraded their Apple firmware. Instructions and everything are in the zip.

Thanks for linking to it here, ryan.

It is pretty simplistic, but automated enough to quicken up the installation.  As ryan said, all you have to do afterwards is put the rockbox firmware onto the iPod.

Enjoy.

New version out (Version 5).

---------------------

Version 5 by Bjehsus:
He has done an excellent job, changing:
-Added a nice GUI.
-Done away with copying files to C:\Rockbox. That was pointless, and not needed.
-Cleaned up the code a bit.
-Merged the installer, the Linux installer, and the uninstaller into one file--Installer.bat.
-Added Mini 2G bootloader support - something that should've been there since the beginning.
-Almost a total re-write, re-structure.

Coming from me, the orginal developer, this is a wonderful job that Bjehsus has done.  It was sorely needed, but I lacked the motivation.  Well done Bjehsus!

Please read the first post of the thread for detailed information!

---------------------

Just wanted to let you guys know over here (Rockbox is, after all, your project :P).  V5 has a GUI and is a lot easier to use, but keep in mind that it is an unofficial development.

Again, read the thread at iPW if you need more information.

Just wanted to point out that if you don't use Windows, I wrote this installer that works on any system with a Python port:

Looks pretty good (although basic), CodyM.

I would like to inform everybody here about version 7 and what has been going on since v5.

Version 5 has been taken down to a bug, addressed in v6.

Change log for v6 through v7:

Version 6 changed/added:
-Major bug fix when trying to install Rockbox along side iPod Linux.
-Automatic iPod location through ipodpatcher.exe.
-Cleaned up more code.
It is very important that you get this update, as version 5 may break your iPod Linux installation. This version won't.

Version 6.1 changed/added:
-iPod Mini 1G support.
-ID variable implemented (because of Mini1G/2G conflicts in building the bootloader), but this should not affect or be visible to the end-user.

Version 7 changed/added:
-Text reader screen to view the ReadMe.txt file (this one) inside the Installer GUI. Available at Main Menu.
-Addition of WGET.EXE program. Big thanks to the developers of the WGET project!
-Support for update/download of bootloader files through WGET. WGET.EXE will compare timestamps and download a new bootloader if your one is obsolete.
-Fixed bug that froze the install process just before making the Rockboot binary. This has been associated to the ID variable not being correctly implemented.
-Code clean-up and minor reorganization.

Thanks for the support so far (that is coming in through our download counters on the iPW forums), development will continue.  I plan to add automatic Daily Build download/extract/move to root soon.

Bjehsus and I would be highly honored if this installer is adopted as the 'official' Rockbox installer, as I believe it to be the most complete.  Regardless, the updates will continue until the product is highly polished.

Thanks all :)

So I just used this on my 60GB 5G ipod, and everything seemed to work properly, but when I disconnect and reboot the ipod all I get is a screen that says apple.com/support/ipod. Any thoughts?

I'll third that. However uninstalling the Rockbox fixed the problem it caused.

i had the same issue, had to restore my ipod to get it to work. i had reinstalled because for about 3 days absolutely no sound would come out when i clicked on a song using hte RB build, but if i booted to the original fw, everything was fine.  after having to reload everything, think i am gonna wait a coupe of weeks and see what else happens. love rockbox for finally bing able to play my flac/ogg/shn file. looking forward to trying it again when my wife's shuffle comes back from the shop and i can run the risk of breaking my ipod agian

I have released version 7.5, and hopefully it has fixed these problems people have been having.

Changes:
-Rewrite and review of code. Not a total rewrite, but all of the process code has been. Hopefully this will fix the 5G problem.

-Addition of automatic iPod generation identification, and what drive letter the iPod belongs to. This means that the screens asking you what your iPod is are not needed, and have therefore been eliminated.

-Reshuffle of events in the code, although you as the end-user wouldn't see too much of it.

-Update to the README document, hopefully being more of a help then before.

Thanks.

Emergency: Help with Ipod Video
« Reply #14 on: May 08, 2006, 07:59:41 PM »
Hi there,

I installed Rockbox installer V7.5 and followed its intstructions in read me file. I clicked on Installer.bat then asked me for 7za.exe. I copied, 7za.exe  & paste to rockbox folder.  Then run again installer.bat then asked me for bootloader.bin, copied this also to rockbox folder.  Clicked installer.bat then installation process prompted.  After installing I disconnected ipod from pc & experienced errors after.  An exclamation point and folder icon appears on the iPod screen.  I pressed menu/middle button to restart. However, ipod won't reboot.  Can you help me with this situation?  Thanks.  I appreciate.
