Limit Bookmarks to One Per Track
« on: May 31, 2010, 04:51:15 PM »
My understanding is that we can have one bookmark per directory, or up to 10 bookmarks across all directories and files or all within the same file.  I would like to have an option to disallow multiple bookmarks per track.  In other words, only one bookmark per track.  So if you had 10 bookmarks they would be on 10 different files.

Your understanding is (still) wrong. There is no limit in bookmarks, and adding an artificial limit is a bad idea in general.

the 10 bookmarks you are talking about is the last 10 saved... as bluebrother said, there is no articifial limits on the amount of bookmarks in a track or folder

I am not asking for an artificial limit on the number of bookmarks.  I don't need to keep track of all the points that I stopped at for a single track.  I just need to return to the last stop point.  There is already a "Unique Only" option to keep one bookmark per directory.  So all I am asking for a "Unique Per Track" option.  The Recent Bookmarks list only shows the last 10 bookmarks, so if I stop and start a track 10 times, I can't go back to a previous track because all the bookmark slots would have been used up for the current song.  This seems to be a reasonable request to me.

From the manual:

Maintain a list of Recent Bookmarks.
If this option is enabled, a list of the most recently created bookmarks may be accessed through the Recent Bookmarks option in the Main Menu. This list contains up to ten entries.

    No
Do not keep a list of recently used bookmarks. This also removes the Recent Bookmarks from the Main Menu.
    Yes
Keep a list of recently used bookmarks. Each new bookmark is added to the list of recent bookmarks.
    Unique Only
Add each new bookmark to the list of recently used bookmarks, but only keep one bookmark from the current directory or playlist; any previous entries are removed.

You seem to be missing the fact that you can access a tracks bookmarks by way of its bookmark file, rather than the "Recent bookmarks" list. Recent bookmarks is specifically for recent ones. If you have "Unique Only" enabled and still have bookmarks in more than 10 files so you can't go through the recent list to the 11th file (which is hardly recent by this point) you can always just open the .bmark file and select the appropriate bookmark from the full list for that track.

While it may be possible to access the bookmark by changing my settings to show .bmark files, and with some addtional key presses each and every time I want to go back to a previous bookmark, it is just nicer if the Recent Bookmarks wasn't cluttered with useless entries.  I am not asking anyone to change the way they use their player.  I am simply submitting a request for an OPTIONAL configuration setting that helps me use my player the way I want.

So the problem is that you have 11+ files all of which you need to access multiple bookmarks (per file) from at the same time?

No. The problem is much simpler than that.

As an example, let's say I have 2 files.  If I stop and start the first file once, the Recent Bookmarks list looks good:

File 1, 22:30

I can return to the point in File 1 at 22:30.

Now I listen to File 2 and stop and start 10 times:

File 2, 10:01
File 2, 15:23
File 2, 19:12
File 2, 24:28
File 2, 30:18
File 2, 34:12
File 2, 42:45
File 2, 46:10
File 2, 50:14
File 2, 55:34

Now I can't go back to File 1 because it has rolled off the list.  This is how I think the list should look:

File 2, 55:34
File 1, 22:30

Thank you, Llorean for your patience and help in understanding my request.

Again - try the "unique only" feature, which already exists.

Disabling bookmark on stop might also be a good idea ...

The "Unique Only" feature only keeps one bookmark per directory.  I am asking for one bookmark per track and multiple per directory.

In my example above, the list would be:

File 2, 55:34

But I need this:

File 2, 55:34
File 1, 22:30

It's actually "one bookmark per playlist" but a directory is treated as a playlist.

Rockbox has no way to know that you didn't mean to include other files in your playlist. Either create a static playlist, or put the files in separate directories so that you aren't inserting all of them into a playlist and then expecting it to differentiate two different positions within the same playlist as your intent of "I'm playing two different files" and you should be fine.

It is a lot of work to create separate directories for every file and to create playlists just to make bookmarking work right.  I hope someone can figure out how to make this a feature of Rockbox.

Again, it's "one bookmark per playlist" so Rockbox's entire playlisting method would have to change to meet your requirements. Basically, it would need to remove the option to play everything in a folder. Either that, or it would need to remove the option to bookmark within a playlist.

How many files do you realistically have that you need to keep parallel bookmarks in, but for some reason cannot put in different folders?

As you can probably guess, very few people have felt the current bookmarking system creates any sort of problem, so it sounds like your situation is somewhat unique.

Maybe if you could describe exactly what it is your setup is like (are these files podcasts, recordings of something, or what?) someone might be able to recommend a more effective way to accomplish what you want that doesn't require challenging fundamental systems already in place.
