Problem with database?
« on: May 17, 2009, 08:01:43 PM »
I have a Sansa e260. I had about 200 songs on it and installed RockBox about two days ago. Today I tried to add three songs to the e260. I put them in and updated my database, they weren't there. I changed my folder to view all and put the songs in the MUSIC folder, I updated again; still the songs were not in the database (and yes I did reboot). Also all of the previous song are fine, it's just that these three won't show up...

Could they be showing up as untagged?

I have a sansa e280 and I'm having a similar problem, though mine seems to be more complicated... Everything that was on the mp3 player before I updated shows up, except each song shows up twice. I can't update the player or it doesn't seem to be registering the update. I use WMP to sync the device automatically and it seems to work fine. When I check on the device itself, all the new music shows up as it should. It's only when I try to play the mp3 that I can't find it.

I checked out the untagged theory and the songs I'm looking for aren't there. I updated some of the songs on my computer, adding the correct file names. Everything works fine but when I sync it, there's no change to the device. I can't seem to update it beyond what it was before I added Rockbox.

When I run sansa with the original firmware the songs are there, it's only with Rockbox that they don't appear.

Also there's this glitch where every song in my list appears twice. I don't think there are two physical files of each song because there isn't enough space on the mp3's hardrive for that. It's 8GB and I have 7GB of music on there.

Regarding multiple database entries: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8414

If you read the comments near the end there's some settings mentioned that seem to provide a workaround for people.

How are you updating Rockbox's database?

Thank you, I'll check out that link.

The mp3 is set to MSC--though I've tried MTP as well--and I sync it automatically through Windows Media Player. The original firmware recognizes the updates but Rockbox doesn't.

Edit:

I had this problem on my e260 until I enabled both the "Load database to ram" AND "Directory Cache" options. Hasn't happened since.
Where can I find those options?

The PDF manual is searchable with an appropriate reader.  ;)

You didn't mention about how you update Rockbox's database.  Have you set it to do this automatically or have you told it to update manually?

I've got it now working in that it will update when I put new music on the player but I'm still having problems with multiple file entries.

I followed the link you gave me and enabled both the "Load database to ram" AND "Directory Cache" options as was advised but the problem persists. I've also disabled auto-update as some found that to be the problem. Any ideas?

Did you initialize the database since you enabled those settings?  I'm not certain that changing settings will eliminate multiple entries if they were already created.  Possibly, it lessens the likelihood of them appearing but doesn't get rid of them if your database already contains them.

You are welcome to post in the bug report with your findings.  Any new information about reliable ways to trigger the problem is welcome as maybe it will provide a better hint as to the actual source of the problem.  I haven't seen this happen on my players in a while --- though, I admit I mainly use the file browser.

I did initialize the database but I'm realizing that there might be something stopping the settings I changed from taking effect. Few things are happening. If I disable auto-update and try to update the database, rather than simply updating it with the thousand or so files I have, it continues (as far as I can tell) indefinitely. I stopped it at 27 000 or so. I also realized that trying to enable the Directory Cache setting may not be working as I chose Yes then rebooted the player only to find that it had returned to No.

There might be some problematic (from Rockbox's perspective) metadata on some of your files.  Can you get it to build properly with a subset of your files?

...So, I have no idea what happened. I've been repeating the same actions since I fist had the problem (disabling reenabling rebooting autoupdate, the directory cache and Load to ram) and somehow it took effect last night. I turned my player on this morning to find that all the duplicate files were gone.

Huh.

Except now of course, the song list has reverted back to what it was when I first put music on my player.

Update: I initialized and updated the database and some of my (slightly older but still new) music appears but the most recent stuff doesn't. It does, however, appear when I run the original sansa firmware.

Did they previously appear in Rockbox's database?

Yes.

I think I'm just going to try completely reinstalling Rockbox because it's just been problem after problem here...

While you're at it,l it wouldn't hurt to run a file system check as well.
