system error 20
« on: February 06, 2009, 09:55:54 PM »
I tried installing rockbox on my F10 using a CF to DIsk adapter and a 4gb disk removed from a dead ipod.  On connecting to the usb bootstrap I was able to read the disk and install the rockbox files (also the original firmware files needed for booting).  However after restarting I get the system error 20 message in red (which also showed up when I first powered up with the ipod disk before it showed the usb connection logo).

What am I doing wrong?
BTW it was still working with the original F10 disk loaded with rockbox.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
about 24 hours later .....
DUH!  Plugged the gigabeat back into the usb port and ran fdisk.  Stupid ipod disks have two partitions with the SECOND partition being the primary one.  Gigabeat disk has but ONE partition.  So, the answer was to re-partition, re-format, re-load.
NOW IT WORKS!

Now I can put some music on the thing and see if it will be stable.  IF so, then I might try another CF card.  (the 32gb cards are getting cheaper!)

Still running strong on my F20 + 8GB CF card (been about a month, now).  No panics or freezes.

I do seem to have one problem.  If I try to upload files to the gigabeat by drag and drop of multiple files at once (especially a whole directory or string of directories at once) the upload usually freezes in the middle.  When this happens sometimes the gigabeat is disconnected or dismounted from the pc.  If I pull the usb cable and reboot the gigabeat some of the files may be missing, or they will appear in the file view on the gigabeat, but not on the pc when the gigabeat is reconnected.

If I drag and drop just a few files at a time I don't see this problem.  This is with the 4gb micro disk from the ipod in a CF to IDE adapter mounted in the player instead of the hard disk.  I was doing this to test the adapter after having file corruption problems with an A-Data 16gb CF card.  If I don't have any freezes or file corruption with the mini disk, I'll try another CF card (I'll get a faster one).  There are now some 133X 'generic' CF cards in 16 and 32GB sizes on ebay made with Toshiba chips that are nicely priced.

PS .. Running Linux (Debian) on my computer, if that makes a difference from windows.

I'm using Ubuntu Intrepid x64, my CF adapter is the one from Dealextreme, and I'm using a 133x Lexar 8GB CF card (is this helps at all).    No issues at all, and I have copied multiple files / directories at once.

Anything in "dmesg", when it disconnects?  Any errors?

I didn't think to look in dmesg.
The window that opens while the transfer is in progress (which shows the percent copied and files copied/remaining) shows "stalled" when the transfer freezes up.

If this is the CF adapter you are using http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10886
then I have the same one, or a good  copy (from someone else).   One possible difference, I was connected to the computer via an external powered USB hub plugged into the MB internal USB connector.  However, I have also hooked to an external USB hard disk via the same hub with no problems (I assume the external USB disk was faster than the GB/adapter/4gb micro drive combo).

Yes, that's the adapter I have - I needed to bend the jumper in a bit to get it to fit in my F20.

I didn't have that problem with the F10.  I think I just put a shorter shorting jumper on the thing and it just fit.  Well I ordered one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/150X-32GB-OEM-HIGH-SPEED-COMPACT-FLASH-CF-CARD-32-GB-Go_W0QQitemZ120375409520QQihZ002QQcategoryZ18871QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
(but a few bucks cheaper, got it before he raised his price)
