Why "Open With..." in the WPS Context Menu
« on: May 22, 2008, 02:15:02 PM »
I was wondering why the "Open With..." option was added to the WPS Context Menu.  It seems like if you are accessing this from the WPS, then it must refer to the currently played track. Why would you want to open the currently playing track with another application?  Am I missing something?

I asked the same question in #rockbox before i restored it today (it was present at some point before but was lost in some code change), here's the response i got:

Quote
n1s   hmm, when did the "open with..." menu item get removed from the wps context menu, and should it be put back or removed from the manual?
18:12:06   amiconn   n1s: Umm, it needs to be restored
18:12:37   amiconn   It's needed e.g. for the spliteditor

I then realized it could also be nice to be able to open the current file with the properties plugin.

And of course in the future, a metadata editor might also be available through this menu.

I also was wondering (and still wonder!) as to why this entry is included into the WPS context menu. If I want to open a certain file with a certain plugin, I point to that file in the file browser and select "Open with...". There the option is Ok. But the sequence is: first, I think of a file and then about what I'd like to do with it. In the WPS, the situation is different. You are presented the file (the playing one) and then you choose the plugin. BTW: I bet only few plugins can do something with an audio file, so the entry is effectively useless.

Why should be there because of spliteditor? Can't you run that plugin on the file from the file browser?

So I'd be for excluding this entry from the wps context menu.

For the same reason that ratings are linked to the currently playing song : because it saves having to move back out and find a file to proceed with a change when there's already a pointer to it.

When do you realize that 'With a little help' and 'Lucy in the Sky' are stuck together and need to be split beside when you're actually listening?  When do you find out your song has no tag beside when the WPS shows none?

No you can't (so without that fix you couldn't use the spliteditor...) and even if you could: the plugin is designed in a way that lets you fine tune the split point which means that listening to the complete file to find the split point is rather tedious in it. It's much more convenient to adjust the point roughly in the WPS and then open the spliteditor. You'll be at the right spot in the file for the fine tuning.

There is not a metadata editor currently.  But it's obviously a feature that many people would find useful.

(Please remember to not use slang.)
