"no sansa found"
« on: November 19, 2007, 08:19:32 AM »
Hi

I want to install Rockbox on my sansa e280, but when I klick "full install" in the Rockbox utility it sais "no sansa found". I have previously extracted the .rockbox of the new build into my sansa, and the Autodetection of the utility also detecs my Sansa correctly. So I have tried to install the bootloader using sansapatcher.exe, but it sais "no sansa found". I'm sure it is in MSC mode and correctly connecte to my PC, because I can open the sansa filesystem with Windows...

help Fate

Dont judge me by me english skills, I'm from Germany

Look on the bottom of the back of your Sansa, and tell us if there's a "v2" somewhere on the bottom.

We just found out that SanDisk has released "v2" models of the e200 and c200 series, and that they have completely new chipsets inside.

Maybe it's time to update the home page (http://www.rockbox.org) to something like:
SanDisk: Sansa c200, e200 and e200R series (not the "v2" models)

We should, but first I want to know if youR.Fate actually has one or not so we can help him.

It doesnt say "v2" on the back, but its wheel looks different from the one one of my mate has, so it has to be some kind of "new version". Its kinda brand new (bought it about 2 weeks ago).

Hmmm... curiouser and curiouser...

Okay, one more question: Do you still have the packaging? See if there's a line anywhere on the back that mentions Audible file format support.

And if you can post a picture or two, take a snap of the front, back, and the back of the package (if you still have it!)

Could you check the version of the original firmware? The c200v2 has 3.x.x whereas the c200(v1) has 1.x.x. Maybe it's the same for e200?

Ok you can download the pics here, (too big for common image hosters, so I used filefront and a self-extreacting archive): http://files.filefront.com/SansaE280newexe/;9078519;/fileinfo.html

Software version: 01.02.18E

If you need more pics or if the download doesn't work, just ask.

Software version 01.02.18E definitely means that you've got a v1... wait a second!

I see what you forgot to do! Rerun Sansapatcher with Administrative access!

Try this: Start > All Programs > Accessories, and then right-click Command Prompt and select "Run As...", then enter the name of an account that has Administrative access.

Then run Sansapatcher, and cross your fingers.

Which version of rbutil are you using?  (it should tell you in the About box).  You need to make sure you're using 1.0.3 - 1.0.2 had a bug which prevented it installing bootloaders on Sansas and ipods.

Couple more questions:

1) Which version of Windows are you using (XP, Vista, ...) ?

2) Does your Sansa appear as a drive letter (e.g. E: ) when you connect it to your computer?

You could also try running sansapatcher - it's an alternative program to install the bootloader.  A download link and instructions are in the manual.

Not to hijack someone else's help line, but I've hit the exact same problem on two seperate computers(WinXP home and WinXP 64 Pro full updates on both). The sansa e280 isn't showing up as a drive at all. At least not with a standard mount point. Results of my own half hour's worth of explorations are as follows.
In folder view it shows up between Control Panel and Shared Documents.
It does not show up in Rbutil browse locations window.
The address bar calls it "My Computer\Sansa e280" with a subfolder "PPI NAND". "PPI NAND" has the standard MUSIC, PICTURES, sort of folders.
Device manager puts it under portable devices at "Location 0(Sansa e280)" Driver provided by microsoft dated 2/22/06 version 5.2.5326.4762
Firmware version PP5022AF-05.51-S301-02.18-S301.02.18A-D, (Build 32.10)
As stated, SANSAPATCHER cannot find any device.
Will explore more tonight.

EDIT: Feeling really really stupid. The problem is the USB setting. By default the device comes in MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode, required by evil people, like microsoft. To fix this, disconnect and turn on your e280, go to settings, USB modes, and select MSC (Mass Storage Class). Plug the device back in and Windows should let you know that it has detected a new mass storage device drive whatever. Problem solved.
