Replacing the apple splashscreen
« on: July 13, 2007, 10:49:56 AM »
So I really want to replace the apple splash screen on my RB'd 80gb Ipod video with something a bit more...rockboxy.  Will it affect rockbox installation to update the apple firmware with a modded version?  Thanks for all the great work that has gone into and come out of the development of Rockbox!

Small bit of advice from personal experience: leave the Apple logo. It increases the "surprise" and "Wow that's cool!" factors up. I have co-workers that come look at my iPod as I turn it on, only to see that nice "holy cow that's hot!" look on their face as the Apple logo is suddenly replaced with the Rockbox splash. It gets them to start asking more questions about Rockbox in general.

And as a bonus, now five people in my job are using Rockbox after they saw this!

I can appreciate the benefit of that, but still, I do NOT want to have to see the Apple logo before the RB logo every time I power up.  I'm only using an Ipod as a vessel for RB.

Still wondering,
Brian

That Apple logo would be part of the in-flash image. Any failure to modify it properly could result in a permanent bricking of your player. Feel free to give it a shot. ;)

ok, there IS a way to replace the apple logo. its by using ipw (ipodwizard). now, i know that there are a lot of people who started there ipod modding careers in ipodwizard and then found out about rockbox and now use it with dual boot. i being one of them. more on the hack: it was found that the startp logo was simply a bmp image and could easily be replaced. go to http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=25208 to download ipw 1.3 which youll need. the boot logo is built right into the program. if you need help with it search the ipw forums. (honestly, i havent tried out any of this as my ipod is in my house on the other side of the world)

Right, I know about ipw, but I was wondering if changing the apple firmware will affect rockox installation.  so i.e., if itunes were to update my ipod with a new firmware, would it mess up the rockbox bootloader or anything of that sort?

If you use iTunes to update your Apple firmware - you will have to reinstall the rockbox bootloader.

Otherwise it'll be fine.
