Title: firmware Ipod then rockbox
Post by: thoai on January 04, 2007, 12:23:59 PM
hi,

I have read on the web that when we have installed rockbox and when we are starting the Ipod, rockbox is opening by default, and when we want to change to Ipod firmware we must do some manipulation.

But can we do the contrary, that is to say, when we  are starting the Ipod, the Original firmware of Ipod start , and when we want we can do the manipulation to go on rockbox.

Is it possible?

Thank you for all.

happily, yes we can.

You reset your iPod by pressing and holding the center button and menu.

Then when the apple logo appears, it goes to rockbox by default.

TO go back to Apple firmware, just hold play to turn off then just press a button until the apple logo appears or just reset again.

When apple logo appears, hold play and it will go to apple firmware

No, you cannot change the boot order with Rockbox oficial bootloader.

You can do this with loader2 bootloader, but is unnoficial and not supported by Rockbox.

that is to say there is no more warrenty by roclbox, but is still there the warrenty of my Ipod?

Is there a risk for my Ipod with loader2?

Rockbox does NOT provide a warranty.

You are doing this entirely at your own risk.  We will try to help should something go wrong (and on an iPod especially that is a next to impossible chance), but still, it is at your risk

thoai, why do you think the boot order is so important?

With loader2, instead of booting right to firmware, a boot menu opens with the following options:

Apple OS
Rockbox
Disk Mode
Sleep

You have to select before entering.

But maybe, if you put the countdown time to 0s, they boots Apple OS skipping the menu, I don't know...
But if works this way, you cannot have time to access the others options, hahaha! So, try putting 1s countdown.

ok but do we note a failure of the ipod due to an installation of rockbox?

The order was important because I often use video and rockbox don't manage to play video, and only sometimes i need zoom on my photo and apple firmware don't have zoom.

There is a bootloader under the Unofficial Builds forum by Mikeage that will do what you want.  However, I do not know if it is the newest bootloader or not.  Ask him.

I think for you it would be better to use the common version of rockbox.

I say this only becuase from your questions and comments you seem to be kind of newbish to this type of hobby or whatever you want to call this activity of hacking.

That being said and not ment to be an insult, I think you should keep it basic.  The basic install and builds are stable and almost 99% non lethal if you screw up.  Any an all documentation will refer to these builds and setups.  Once you are more familiar than you can try other stuff

Vliger2002 I Just remembered and checked and the answer is yes you can boot apples FW without a alternate bootloader.

Once you install rockbox.

Start your iPod by holding down Menu until you see "Loading Original Firmware"

That means apples fw is loading and not rockbox.

Once the iPod starts use the apple firmware as you wish.

When shutting down just hold down the Play/Puase button until sceen powers down.  This is realy the iPod in stand-by mode.

When you next want to use the iPod hold down any button and you will wake the iPod for stand-by back into apple FW.

You will only boot Rockbox after a full shut down (Hold Menu and Select for a few seconds)

Once a full shut down is done then you will boot Rockbox by default once more.

To revert back to defualt apple hold menu at boot until "Loading Original Firmware" appears.

Vliger2002 I Just remembered and checked and the answer is yes you can boot apples FW without a alternate bootloader.

That's the old method of booting the original firmware - with the new bootloader you need to flick the hold switch to "on" as soon as you power on the iPod. This will cause it to load apple's firmware.

When apple logo appears, hold play and it will go to apple firmware
With the new iPod bootloader you (re)boot and immediately toggle the "Hold" switch to the on position to boot AppleOS.
With the old iPod bootloader you (re)boot and immediately press and hold the "Menu" button to boot AppleOS.

The basic install and builds are stable and almost 99% non lethal if you screw up.
Rockbox, official or not, is 100% non-lethal if you screw up.

You will only boot Rockbox after a full shut down (Hold Menu and Select for a few seconds)
Not to nitpick, but "Menu"+"Select" is not a shutdown command, it is a reset command.  While it is true that you must perform a hard reset to get out of AppleOS (unless you are willing to wait two days for AppleOS to go from "Sleep" to "Power Off") propagating the misconception that it is a shutdown leads many to falsely believe they have cleanly shut down their player when, in fact, they have done the equivalent of pulling the power plug on their computer.  Rockbox will not save state when you reset it so abruptly.
