Title: URGENT HELP: I DAMAGED MY IPOD 6th Gen
Post by: ksamj on August 13, 2020, 12:46:18 AM
hi everyone

i found about rockbox and tried to install it as mentioned in the tutorials and guides but during the process i believe i missed up in the bootloader thing

as the ipod showed me error on that dos alike black screen after that it won't boot up and keep displaying a big red "X" and down a link of support

i tried to restore the ipod to original ipod os but the pc and mac won't recognise it at all

so i don't know what to do now.

it was working ok but i wanted to change to rockbox for features now it is damaged fully

can anyone help me ?
if the bootloader is damaged what to do and if "for example i choose a different ipod model 5th instead of 6th gen during the process" is there any hope to fix that?

i was planning to replace Hard disk to that CF to Zif for more memory, will it resolve the bootloader issue or the bootloader is saved on board like a firmware type thing?

also i can't access "disk mode"

please please please help me guys.

thanks

Is it just iTunes that doesn't recognise your iPod? If it mounts at all you might be able to reformat it as a drive and then try iTunes.

No it is not recognized at all and it open for few seconds displaying this red mark and then shutdown

I tried to follow an artical for doing a firmware restore via cmd  but when I reach the point which need to be formatted nothing shows or recognizies by the pc

The article I followed is
https://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/Restore_iPod_without_iTunes

I can't perform the final step as the ipod is not recognized by the pc at all

Not showing in to disk management or partion softwares

If you selected the wrong model nothing will happen.  It won't damage your device.

I'm not sure from your post what you actually did, but you should be able to put the player into DFU mode and restore it with iTunes.

i have put it in DFU mode and once itunes mention "ipod need to recover" it loads to some point and then it disconnects after and again restarts the ipod with the red circle and keeps in loop

please watch the video

UPDATE 2: so I managed to get to the diagnostics menu

When I go to test the "Hard disk Spec" it shows

[can't open device] Error! Diag Halt

So I belive this is a hard drive problem. isn't it?

Sounds like a hard-drive failure, to me.  Has this ipod ever been opened or refurbished?  I don't believe installing rockbox can cause such a problem, I don't think you can brick an ipod classic via just software means, if the hardware is OK it should always be possible to restore it with iTunes.  But it seems as if the process of installing rockbox can sometimes reveal a failing hard-drive.

Opening a 6th gen is a real PITA, very hard to do without mangling the case.  But you might have to do that to replace the HD.  The only other scenario I can imagine is that the hd cable has come unseated somehow.

Well it was not opened before or refurbished. I bought it in 2009 and since was OK but a recent accident happened that.i connected it to my car and everything got wiped from hard drive. So much I was very frustrated and anger to change the firmware to rockbox. Once I started it got dead. So now I'm now waiting to replace the hard disk with CF to Zif.

One thing to note when I start the HDD test on the diagnostics it click sound and then show error can't open.

So I hope that it would be only the hdd replacement

If you do replace the hard drive, be very, very careful with the battery cable and connector.  Breaking the latter off the logic board while attempting to disconnect the battery is a common way to wreck your ipod.

Thanks for the tip
I have watched alot of videos and got used to the cabling inside by now.
All remains is the replacements parts to know if the issue is really the hdd (which I hope it would be the case only)
I owned the ipod since 2009 but I really love it so much and I hope it will recover.
Wish me luck.
