Yes the current firmware has not been updated for some time.
The version I have is PSS231 has 1Gb memory and no FM Radio.
It does not connect as a UMS device even though it has a standard usb connector.
It connects only though windows media player or with a special driver installed.
It is a very solid built unit and has very good sound quality.
Possible firmware improvements would be:
1) enable UMS mode.
2) make the backlight stay on longer or perm on when on mains.
3) The song title text could be a bit bigger.
The firmware file format for this is FWImage.mif and about 2.8 Mbytes.
unable to discover the processor used and not been able to open the unit to find out yet.
Can anybody else help with more info on this unit?
I would like to know the processor used and what the firmware file format is.

Is that FWimage.mif file available for download anywhere?

Yes it can be download from the philips support site as "pss231_00_fus_eng.exe"
which is then installed to a windowsXP machine.
The file "FWImage.mif" ends up in a folder called "firmware" along with another folder called "font" containing the file "image2.ebn"(1.8Mb) which I assume the player also uses.

That's not a reason for starting a new port. A new port gets started when someone is interested in porting Rockbox and actually starts to work on it ...
