Title: Best Rockbox player for games?
Post by: Dragonslayer182 on November 04, 2013, 06:03:34 PM
I want to buy a new MP3 player that's rockboxable, but I want it to be able to play GB and Doom well (non-choppy framerate), and I also want it to have a decent screen. Are there any which fit this category?

Just about any Android device should be fine and you have a big choice of screen sizes. See Rockbox as an application: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/AndroidPort (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/AndroidPort)

Of the conventional "mp3 player" type non-Android devices you could try a Sansa Fuze+ as it has a good screen and runs Doom easily.

I wouldn't suggest an Android device here for the simple reason that for the use cases mentioned Rockbox is a very poor choice.

Android offers a native solution capable of running both use cases orders of magnitude better than Rockbox will.

Edit: I forgot to mention the main reason why OP using an Android device for this use case would be a tragically bad idea:
Neither doom.rock or rockboy.rock are compiled for Android application builds, for the above mentioned reason.

Control is another potential issue, not all devices (practically none these days) have anywhere near the amount of physical keys (capacitive or otherwise) as some games would require to be fully playable - this is the type of thing you would really want at least a 4-way DPAD and select for at least - but it absolutely doesn't matter due to the point from the prior sentence, these plugins don't even exist on Android targets.

Apologies, I should've made that clear in my initial post.

Actually, now that I've done some research, an android device sounds better for gaming than a rockboxed MP3 player. I'm going to buy a low cost one for simple emulation and simple games. Would this do it well?: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00AQN1ZXM/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used
