Title: Can I view the songs in the playlists?
Post by: Cedrik on July 28, 2010, 06:47:05 PM
Hi people,
I'm sure this question has been answered before but after about a half-hour of searching I have decided to post it anyway.
Why can't I view the songs that are in my playlists? I would like to be able to select 1 song in 1 playlist at any point in time without having to load the full thing.
Also, when I click on "View current playlist", I only get the truncated iTunes version. My files are all correctly tagged...
Any suggestions?

An m3u playlist is just a list of paths to files.  If support for EXTM3U was added then you could have the playlist viewer show filenames instead of paths.

I don't quite understand your other point.  If you just want to play a single file just find it in the file browser or the database viewer.  I can't imagine it would be more convenient to search out a particular playlist and search through it for a particular track than using file browser or database.

It's pretty simple: since I copied the playlists I had on the original iPod firmware onto my Rockbox, the files that are in the playlists are nowhere to be found in the Database. Therefore I'd like to be able to view the contents of the playlist before playing it.
Obviously I could just copy the playlist and rename the whole thing with the same artist name (Playlist1 would be the artist name), but then what's the point of making playlists at all?

Have you updated the database?  All of the media on your player should be indexed, ignoring the possibility of database.ignore.  Most people who use Rockbox alongside Apple's firmware use the database to browse music.  If this isn't working for you then the logical thing would be to try to address that issue.

Playlists can be quite useful, just not so much (in general) as a method of finding a particular track.

The one thing I absolutely love about Rockbox is the "party mode". Unfortunately I can't use the songs that are exclusively in playlists and not in the database. And most of my party songs are exclusively in playlists!

Where can I suggest features to the developers?

Your songs have to physically be on the iPod hard drive so that they can be played, so regardless of whether the songs are also referenced in a playlist, Rockbox should be able to play them using the Database.
Of course, if the songs are DRMed, then Rockbox won't play them.

If you have initialised the database and if the songs are on the ipod, then they are in the database.  Playlists are irrelevant for this.
