Hello everybody,
can anyone tell me whether charging and playing at the same time is supposed to work on a 2G iPod?
I tried holding the menu button while plugging in the firewire cable but as soon as the firewire connection is detected I see a firewire symbol on the screen and the player reboots and starts in charge mode.
Any hints?

I haven't managed to find a way to get it to work when connected to the PC. But you can use a standalone charger (or modify a firewire cable so that only the power connections are used, not the data).

I just found an old topic, sorry for double posting.
Modifying a firewire cable? Never thought about that actually. I wonder if a patch could be submitted to make that work somehow, but I never looked into the code of rockbox and I wonder how debugging and things like that work.
Too bad it doesn't work out of the box, it was the main reason for me to try rockbox :(

A quick eBay search for "Firewire Charger ipod" should get a few hits on people selling the charger you need. I would recommend that approach over modifying the cable, as an incorrectly wired cable can easily permanently damage the Firewire port on the iPod.

Thanks, I will certainly try that.

One way to play while connected to the PC is to set screendump mode from the debug menu.
