Title: nano 1st gen, flac broken in latest release r15365-071029
Post by: kkc on October 29, 2007, 05:07:03 PM
I decided finally to dump all the crappy MP3 files and use only flac.  I just installed the latest release, r15365-071029 and also downloaded and ran ipodpatcher.exe dated 2007 09 18.  I did not re-initialize the ipod using Anapod's anareinit_100.

I have two flac files for testing on the ipod.  The same container folder contains two mp3 files too. All 4 files run fine on winxp with vlc player.  On the ipod however things are different.

When I re-boot the nano and then navigate to any of the two flacs, it will play the file no problem.  However any subsequent flacs are simply skipped over and the player loads up the next available mp3 instead.

So, I then moved the two mp3 out of the folder, just to see what the player would do.  But in this the instance, something completely different happens.  After rebooting, I navigate to the folder with only the 2 flacs, but this time it refuses to play even the 1st flac.  Instead I get an error message "o file!" on the first line and "No file!" on the 2nd line.   If I then navigate to any mp3 in a ny other folder but within same ipod session (i.e. no reboot in between) the nano refuses to play the mp3s - after selecting the file and loading, the nano just sits there, no music and the playtime seconds no longer tick.

If I reboot and then navigate to an mp3, no problem, ipod plays as it should including skipping to and changing tracks.  Next I navigate back to an flac and try to play - no joy.  So again in the same session, I navigate to an mp3 and now all mp3s refuse to play as well.  No error messages.

So in summary we have the following situation:

Any ideas and a fix would be much appreciated.  The flac definitely sounds much better than mp3...!  Thank you.  kkc.

OK, here is some more info.....

I decided to recreate the flacs using EAC v0.99 prebeta 3 and these flacs work better in the nano - but still with errors.  The other flacs were created using Xilisoft and whilst those flacs failed to run at all (with exceptions), the EAC flacs all run but often playback stops after a few seconds or minutes....

Have a look at these 2 topics

and

The current versions of Rockbox have problems which
show up more often, if there's a high processor load.

mborus... thats great, thanks.  I did look at those posts but obviously not well enough.

r14986 seems to have fixed the problems and the flac tracks sound really great.  Goodbye mp3... except for podcasts and audio books...!

Thanks again.  Rockbox rocks..!

That's interesting.  The problems in those threads did not manifest as simple pauses in playback.  Also, you can't mean a regular r14986 build because that is well past the change in the code that made these problems apparent.  If a regular r14986 build fixes your problem then this appears to be a different issue.

i haven't tried any of the later builds.  I know for sure that the latest build r15365-071029 does not work.  Before upgrading I had build (that I had been using) r14831-070923 but I never checked to see if flac was working on this build.
