Title: Ipod Video 5th Gen: No mountpoint given message. Can't install. Any tips?

I get this message over and over. Not sure how to fix.

Obvious question: did you give it the correct mount point for your device?

To be honest, I'm not sure what that is. I'm just given that message. I apologize for not being very computer-literate.

Its the path to your player.  Take a look at the install directions:

It first tells me to select a device in the file system. When I click on the C:drive in the rockbox installer and try to highlight the info in the dropdown (there's only one choice), it does not move that information up. It just stays blank except for the 'C:' at the beginning of the menu.  I cannot change the path, but I'm sure it is in the C drive...???

I very much doubt your I-pod is your C: drive.  Whatever os you are using has a file manager / explorer. Open it and find the correct drive.

My OS is Windows 7 Home Basic...the ipod is read as a mass usb storage device, but it's flagging it and saying it needs to uninstall it...I'm not sure what the heck I need to do. I'll check back later. Thanks for those who've responded so far.

C: is definitely not your Ipod's drive letter -- C: is the system drive on Windows (unless you did some magic to change that, and that's very sophisticated if possible at all). However, Rockbox Utility should be able to automatically detect the correct mountpoint -- did you actually try to use that? Make sure you have Itunes closed.

I did download it with the utility...could it be a setting in itunes that I need to disable? After I plug in the ipod, itunes automatically opens. I do close it, but perhaps it's doing something still? I don't know exactly. I did install a companion program for itunes that identifies songs/albums that aren't properly tagged...that program opens automatically with itunes. I have since uninstalled it, but I haven't tried to load rockbox onto my ipod again due to time constraints. I'll give it another shot tonight (I'm on Saigon time). Thank you for your feedback and suggestions.

Enable disk access in Itunes (this is very important!) and shut down Itunes. Use the autodetection feature of Rockbox Utility, it's 100% reliable for Ipods. If it doesn't detect a mountpoint some software is blocking access to the Ipod.

Thank you so much - I was able to figure it out thanks to your advice. I hadn't enabled the use of disk space on itunes...but, now I can bid adieu to itunes. I appreciate your patience with less tech-savvy folk like myself.

Okay, now that I'm trying to drag and drop files from explorer into the ipod with rockbox, they don't show up in the player even though they're in the location of the ipod (E:). Not sure yet why the files don't load into the player. Time for sleep.

I'm having this same problem and cannot figure out how to enable the disk space on my iPod 5th Generation using the latest incarnation of itunes.  I have gotten it down to a vicious circle on my Mac (there are no PC's in my house to work on):

From the first step of loading the Utility, Rockbox tells me that my iPod must be FAT formatted. On a MAC the only way to do this that I have access to is to go to Disk Utility and reformat (ERASE) the iPod using the DOSFAT format option.  Doing so will indeed reformat the disc to my renamed (ROCKBOX) FAT formatted iPod. Now the rock box utility will autodetect it, but will NOT autodect the mountpoint and will not give me an option to manually insert the mountpoint.  It will go not further than telling me it needs a mountpoint.  Now when I go back in to iTunes to enable the disc, iTunes recognizes the iPod only as a "Recovering iPod" and gives me the option to restore (to MAC format which is useless for Rockbox).  It does not give me any further options to enable the disc.  doublea71 - I'm wondering how you actually accomplished this task?  I'm at a loss.  I looked all over iTunes and could not find any other conduit to alter the ipod settings that allowed me to enable disc use.  Any clues would be appreciated.

This is not sufficient. OS X uses a different partition table format, and you need to change that format as well. The easiest way would be to get access to a Windows machine with Itunes installed. There's a description on how to do this without Itunes in the wiki: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodConversionToFAT32

Which is not surprising. You didn't convert the Ipod to a Winpod, you merely reformatted its data partition. These are two completely different things (even if converting to a Winpod includes reformatting the data partition). Your Ipod is now in a state that neither Itunes nor Rockbox likes. Basically the system on the Ipod is now broken (though it's easy to fix this).

Thanks, Bluebrother.  Is there a way to do this without a PC running iTunes?  I don't own a PC and actually can't think of anyone nearby that I know who does...perhaps a neighbor.  I travel in the graphic arts world and PC's are doorstops to most of us  ;).

I appreciate the fast response and the link - many thanks.

OK, I went over to my neighbor who does have a PC running itunes.  We formatted the ipod using his itunes to MS-DOS FAT-32 successfully.  I ran the RockBox utility once again and got the same message that it needed a mountpoint.

I'm at a loss.  Any further suggestions?

PS The rockbox.org server seems to be down as I could not access the link, nor the homepage

OK, just to confirm; I was able to access the link you provided this morning (thanks).  The first method provided in that link is exactly what I went through to reformat the iPod - Using a PC running Windows plugged it in and via iTunes had it reformat the iPod (which it did indeed ask to do straight off).  All the automatic options are un-ticked except the one that says "manually manage music and videos",  and the "disc access" option was checked, albeit greyed out so I could not have selected it anyway.

Coming back to my Mac and plugging it in it recognizes it as an MSDOS FAT32 in Windows format.  Rockbox Utility still cannot find a mounting point though.  ???  This is a 5th generation 80gb iPod.  In the INFO window under settings the format does indeed come up as Windows.

You need to reformat it if its not FAT32.

i converted it using disk utility in OSX.  the player does not boot.  thanks for responding.  i really put a lot of time into this yesterday and totally thought i had it figured out.  i definitely agree the partitions are jacked.  any suggestions on how to fix 'em?

thanks again!

I don't think the disk utility will work. As I recall there are specific instructions in the manual or wiki for converting. That or you need windows iTunes.

I actually answered pretty much the same question years ago in this very thread. When resurrecting an old thread please read it completely, not only parts. I did state that reformatting is not the proper way to convert an Ipod. That is exactly the problem that was discussed earlier (i.e. on the previous page) and is also exactly the problem you're facing.

ah.  yeah.  good call.  will need to learn how/what pastebin is.  basically i follow those steps and i get one of two errors: "cannot find/possibly not an ipod" or "ipod not found".  i'm doing everything from cmd line.  it's fairly simple, but i must be doing SOMETHING wrong i just dont know what?!?!?

Try the conversion again. When it fails copy the content of Terminal ans pastebin it -- right now it's impossible to say what could be causing the error, since the trace Rockbox Utility provides doesn't know about your previous conversion attempt. And since that failed Rockbox Utility can't work as expected.

Everything installs on my iPod video 5.5 but boot loader. It also seems like the mount point is not correct. I am running a Tarkan SD board. That is restored and running iTunes fine. I have enabled disk use and it just doesn't seem to load bootlaoder. I have OS 10.11.6

For the first time do I need to run Lockbox boot loader from a Windows PC and reformat to exfat32...the first time and then after that I should be able to bring it back to my Mac Pro and be good to go? Thanks for any help. I have searched many places and just can't find an answer.

Definitely cannot use exfat. If you have a Windows PC, you can restore the iPod using iTunes and then use rockbox utility to install.

Thanks for the help trying to figure this out. So to continue. I do have Lockbox installed on my Tarkan Modded 5.5 by going to a friends house that has a PC.  My Mac even recognizes it but it won't let me copy anything over to it as I get the Error 36 message, which I have never got before. I I have tried the terminal thing such as dot_clean and space but no luck. I download most of my things in AIFF from Bandcamp. Most of the time my other Tarkan Modded iPod that is a 5.5 also will not recognize the AIFF files or anything other than what is ripped straight from a CD. Sometimes it does but never found out the reason why. That is why I was hoping that the Rockbox modded one I know have would be so great to drag and drop. I know that someone said on a different thread that Rockbox + Tarkan Mods + a Mac computer does not work the best. I am hoping that someone has figured out a workaround or solution I have not seen. I have looked all over the place. If I missed it here somewhere on the Forum then I am truly sorry. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
