I made this theme because the summer holiday is about to end and I'm going back to school - that's why it look like something scribbled in a notebook.
Any suggestions are welcome.
-
A couple of little doodles on the menu would give it that authentic "student who's bored in class" look! ;)
Can you tell us a little more about how everything in the WPS screen works? (Icons, battery meter, etc.)
-
hah! awesome!
I love it. ditto what Lambda said tho.
-
I think a font that looks more like handwriting would be a great touch too! Cool idea -- I like it!
-
Looks very good! Can you port it to Gigabeat?
-

you know.. you can change the font yourself if you dont like.
-
Lambada: I thought of adding something like that to the menu, but I'm no good when it comes to drawing. Maybe you could help? Just grab a pen and a white paper, make some doodles, scan it/take a photo and send it to me!
The battery meter, volume meter and play mode works just like on any wps - the spots on the battery disappear as the power drains (I haven't made a charging indicator), "sound waves" are added/removed from the volume meter as it changes. The repeat mode changes to "One" or "Shuff." instead of "All" when you choose those modes, it disappears if you turn it off - the same thing goes for the shuffle indicator. There is a hold icon too, but the iconset is not included.
Chronon: If you know a better font, just let me know what it is.
Soader: I'll probably post the photoshop source when it's finished and maybe someone will port it then.
-
Good, I could do it.
-
jswetzen: Some stick figures would be cool enough!
-
Draw a bad dragon or uhh a cool car or something like a stick figure
-
I drew one thing for the menu (it's a beginning at least) and a stick figure for the wps that waves at you whenever you pause ;D
-
A silly idea: For any ports of this theme, replace the doodle of the iPod with whatever device it's ported to.
-
could you port this to ipod nano?
-
cocobomb:I've uploaded the source, you can get it at http://files.filefront.com/PenPaper+psd+sourcezip/;8365705;;/fileinfo.html and you will need photoshop CS2.
-
Agree with you, and thanks for the source, I'll try to make it for Gigabeat.
-
Enough double posting! If I could edit posts as I'd like I would fix cocobomb's double posts, delete Llorean's double post about double posts and also remove GodEater's post on Llorean's double post about double posts. But I can't. And please don't respond to this part of my post. :P EDIT: Thank you Febs.
To the point: I'm creating an iconset to go with the theme and obviously it's made with a pencil. I thought it would look terrible when I made rough draft on the computer, but on the iPod it looks all right! I'll upload it when the second version is finished.
-
Enough double posting!
...
And please don't respond to this part of my post. :P
I'm responding only to say that I have deleted all of the double posts and most of the discussion about double posts. If I see any more double posts, I am going to delete BOTH posts from that poster, and if I see any more discussion about double posts, that will get removed as well. No more warnings.
-
I would say that Pen&Paper is just about completed now. The iconset is finished and I found a good font released under the GNU GPL, so just tell me what you think about the final product.
Maybe just a few more doodles would be nice... bored, anyone? Soader03?
-
Could you correct the zip file on the wiki so that it unzips correctly straight into /.rockbox rather than PenPaper/.rockbox? Otherwise it will not work correctly with RockboxUtility's theme installer.
-
Done!
-
That new font looks really cool with the icons! I'm going to try it on my iPod to see how it looks!
-
Looks pretty good here ;)
-
now all you need is a "fuller" background and its perfect~
-
man i love this theme. the only things i didnt like are. the arrow for the line selector (i changed it to the bar) but the one thing i cant change is the status bar has to be off always. there is a new code that lets you have the status bar on but hidden in the wps
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/CustomWPS#Status_Bar
-
psycho_maniac: What do you dislike about the pointer? Is is too big/small/whatever or don't you like pointers in general? I've added the status bar tag, so you can have it showing in the menu now.
-
just the pointer in general. but i do like the idea of it. kinda like you drew it there. i changed it and sorta wanted to change it back but im used to the bar so i kept the bar. thanks for adding the status bar tag. this theme is cool and right now my default one for quite awhile. Some other things I could see on this theme. is pretty much what i see on most of the themes i use.
1. a symbol to show that the hd is spinning
2. when you charge your player a animated battery bar.
other than that i love it.
-
1. I don't like hd indicators, but I'll make one and comment out the line in the .wps file so that those who wants to can uncomment it.
2. I'm on it.
-
According to the Gigabeat port for this theme, I don't have enough skills to change background, and cut the words on the new one, it looks bad. The only thing I could do is to place the icons on the WPS and convert the .wps file to Gigabeat one.
-
I added hdd and charging indicators and you simply uncomment the last line in the .wps to use the hdd icon. I haven't tested it, because I couldn't figure out how to indicate hdd activity or charging in the sim, but it should work.
Soader: I assume that you are using the psd file (the bmp files are almost impossible to use with another background) and at least Photoshop CS2 because otherwise you can't edit the "smart objects" that I've used.
Anyone can help filling up the backdrop by making some doodles on a white piece of paper, scan them/take a photo of them and post the image here. (The files can be hosted at a site like yousendit.com.) I could then cut them out and add them to the theme. Anyone interested?
-
Here's a few drawings
- sorry about the sizes i got caried away ::)
[attachment deleted by admin for age]
-
if you do end up changing the backdrop please include the original. i like the original. also the charging indicator and hdd indicator are great. keep up the good work
-
hi, this is one of the best wps' ive seen for a long time. could you please port it to the nano? i don't mind if its a different font or anything. or maybe someone could teach me how to port themes?
-
A lot of it is just re-scaling images to fit the new player's screen, selecting a new appropriately sized font and then massaging the placement of elements so that everything looks good on the new target.
-
Soader, you still working on porting this theme to Gigabeat? I can help you out if you need a hand.

Hum, I abandonned due to my poor skills on Corel Paintshop Pro X... I need help for the background, I still can do the rest.

I'm gonna blog here a bit:
Thursday Aug 23, 2:28AM
I just did a nice BG using copy-paste and some patience. Looks really good. I'm not a fan of the size of the font though. Us GB users got less width and more height. The Main Menu options are taking up more than half the screen. Once users start poking around there respective files and folders unless the filename is really small everything is gonna have to scroll and depending on there scrolling options it may get frustrating.

These are discussion forums, not a blog. Please don't spam it with progress reports.

arrrgh! I cannot find it! is it down for some reason?
http://www.rockbox.org/tw...w/Main/WpsIpod5g#PenPaper
takes me only to the wps page, where I can go only down to Classical Dark in the grouping it is supposed to be in...
thanks for helping someone who knows barely enough to get into trouble!

-
thanks very much
-
I'm going to try and port this to the nano.
-
jswetzen, do you think you could provide the font for this theme in 8 and 10 sizes and then upload it to this thread?
-
this theme is awesome! I'm dying to have it on the nano, crzyboyster thanks a lot for at least trying to port it!
-
Here is a .zip with some different sizes of the font:http://files.filefront.com/Matttsrozip/;8397266;;/fileinfo.html
The original font can be found here: http://www.theory.org/~strthrwr/fonts/free/index.php?font=mwtsrc
Good luck! :D
-
Actually, I've already ported the Mario theme to the nano and the crashbox theme (iphone theme) to the nano. i was waiting for the fonts, now i'll really try.
EDIT: the font link with the zip isn't working?
-
May i port/modify to the nano then upload it?
-
crzyboyster: It is working, but it's not a direct link.
cocobomb: Yes, you may! :)
-
Thank you
-
may i have the source for the wps?
-
It's on the first page near the bottom
-
great theme! this has become my new favorite.
-
love it just cant wait to get my 5.5 gen ipod on tuesday
-
could somebody take it to a gigabeat ?
-
Hi All,
I converted this for the Gigabeat (was a bit bored at work ;). I'll place it on the wiki as soon as I got the permission. In the meantime here is a screendump.
[2007-11-08] Available on the wiki now http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WpsGigabeatF#PenPaper
-
thx for your work to convert to the gigabeat - love it
the pi
-
AWESOME theme, great job thanks alot!!
And thanks alot to the guy who converted it to gigabeat ;D
-
This is certainly the best theme for Rockbox I've seen for a while - thank god it wasn't another WMP11 ripoff! we have enough of those.
One thing though - I have a lot of Russian/French/Icelandic music and so have to discount using the handwriting font as it's no use for people wanting accents, Cyrillic and other Unicode goodness. Seeing as I'm useless at getting the font converter to work properly, does anyone know of a decent handwritten font --possibly this one-- they could convert for those like me with a full set of glyphs?
-
Yeah, I just discovered that problem when I was listening to Sigur Rs :P
-
StsIkel:
I'm sorry the font hasn't got the characters you need, but it was difficult to find a good one and I went for design rather than support for different languages.
If you find some other font that you like, I could convert it for you and include it in the theme as an option. You don't get the right feeling without a handwritten font! :P
-
It would take some work, but it would be possible to create your own font from your handwriting. I think FontForge might do what you want.
-
i'd really welcome a font with more glyphs too, if i had a nice handwriting i'd consider converting it to a rockbox font ;)
but i don't... if someone finds a suitable font that supports strange characters i'd appreciate it.
pen&paper is an awesome theme, thank you for making it!
edit: i'll look for a font tonight, perhaps i can find one...
-
I'm almost finished with an E200 port of this fine theme.
I am just awaiting permission to post it for release.
The cute Icons set, that was initially developed on the I Pod and Gigabeat versions is not included, as I could not properly resize the icons, and all my editing programs would not properly work with the translucent channel (It actually showed up as pink). My inability to resize any of the transperancy .bmps also prevented the little stick guy from waving when the music is paused, so instead we have a simple static stick figure in the WPS screen.
Also due to the size restrictions of the Sansa screen, the shrinking of the Icons required to be used with the 8 point font caused them to lose a lot of their charm, so the original Rockbox Icons actually work better here.
The size of the Sansa screen does make it a little harder to read than the wider I-Pod and Gigabeat versions. The 8bit version of the Font is a lot less readable than the original 12 point version, but it's still pretty good.
While I would not use this Theme as my regular theme (cabbie is much more friendly to my 40+ year old eyes) , it's unique nature is where it's charm lies, and those who don't regularly use reading glasses should be able to use it.
This is the first theme conversion I had done, and I hope I did it some justice.
I plan on tweaking a second version to make it more legible on the Sansa, and hope to be able to use the 9 or 10 point version of the font for version two.

That is how transparency is implemented in Rockbox. The pink color is the transparent "marker".
-
Anyone got enough spare time to port this to the H300 (and hence iPod Color/Photo)? I know I haven't :/

Thanks, Linus.
That's exactly what I expect, but when I try to resize it using my basic editors, (paint and GIMP), it seems that it now saves that color as part of the bitmap.
When I run the simulator, the pink comes through.
I'll try resizing the iconset again and place it on the player and see how that works. Perhaps the simulator is not reading the transperancy marker correctly.
As I said before, this is my first real attempt to port over a theme. The only thing's I've done in the past is use WPS tags to modify information on another persons theme, or use a different font, and adjust the WPS for it to fit.
This is my first attempt to actually resize all of the .bmp's and take a known working port of another player and convert it.
I appreciate all your feedback.
-
What's happening there is usually that the resize is dithering the colour at the edge of another part of the image - which throws the exact value of the colour that Rockbox sees as "transparent" off by a few bits, and then you see the pink come through. You'll need to go through pixel by pixel and change it to the correct value.
-
P.Opus: Have you uploaded this theme to the wiki yet or are you not happy with it yet?
-
Hey, I'm making an iPod Nano port... (Edit: Almost finished, except of the icons, some are still pink :( )
Sam
Edit: Maye a bug: when you are playing a song and than rewind and than suddenly fastforward it still shows the rewind image,
when you pause, the same happens the other way around.
-
P.Opus: Have you uploaded this theme to the wiki yet or are you not happy with it yet?
I am currently getting permission. The original author for the I-pod suggested I use the photoshop sources as a base. I resized the Gigabit version and i'm not fully happy with the results. So I think I'll use the sources and make sure it really looks nice before I pop it up there.

Most likely it's the "anti-aliasing" that happens at the edges that give you near but not exactly pink values which in turn will be visible. Depending on the graphic program, there might be an option to turn anti-aliasing off when resizing but it won't look so smooth then. You probably need to clean it up a bit afterwards but maybe not pixel by pixel.

Hey, I'm almost finished with the iPod Nano 1G port, the icons are not pink anymore :) :

Pen&Paper Theme for iPod Nano
Only the font should be changed...
Where do I've to get permission to upload the WPS to the Wiki?
Sam
-
sammienator: You have my permission to post it to the Wiki or rockbox-themes.org, as long as you redistribute it under the same license (Creative Commons by-sa license) as the original theme. It looks good, except maybe for the pink showing up on the stick figure's arm. :-\

Thank you :) I'll upload it under the same licence. I fixed the pink arm, but I didn't make a new screen dump...
What do you think about the font? I resized the original font (Matttsro) to size 7, but it looked ugly :( I think the current one (Nimbus-12) is good enough.
Edit: :( Uploading on rockbox-themes.org is currently down... Can I put it here until rockbox-themes.org is fixed?
-
Would it be easy to whack a clock on it too?

The font looks good, I know that Matttsro gets difficult to read in small sizes - even the size used on the 5g looks a bit pixelated.
You could upload it to the wiki, but the forums is the wrong place to post themes.

I doesn't seem to be down to me, I can both edit and add attachments to the WpsIpodNano page...
Do you have permission to edit the wiki? If not you will have to ask for it in IRC.

Hey,
I uploaded the Pen&Paper theme for iPod Nano :D.
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WpsIpodNano#PenPaper_for_Nano
If something has to be changed, please say it and I'll change it asap!
Sam
jswetzen: I've got permission to edit the wiki, but I tried to upload it as a Theme, not as a WPS... Now I uploaded it as a WPS.
-
sammienator: nice job! I will definitely use it on my nano!

nice to hear that :D

Hmmmm, either! A drawn one (that actually displays the time) would be awesomee but I can imagine it being quite hard to do?
-
Would be really cool :) But I'm not sure if that's possible...
Edit: I think that it should be possible in the 'wps-code', but I don't think it's possible in the 'theme-code'. I'll try to work on it :)

Just wanted to say thanks for converting the font I sent you - I've now got all kinds of icelandic/cyrillic goodness in a matchingish font, if slightly older looking :)
-

I am pretty sure that a hand drawn one would be impossible with SVN Rockbox. I had a wonderful idea about making an analog clock for my Sudan theme, but the hour tags only had true or false values, no conditionals that would allow you to display a picture for every hour and minute. :(
-
Hi
Over here; http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=15260.0 I foolishly suggested that I'd try and modify your theme for the iRivers (H300 & H100 - probably because I and my wife have them). I struggling to find the handwriting font - the link you gave previously is now 404 - do you have a source?
Edit: I re-founf the message - I've got the ZIP from filefront - lets see what I can do...
-
I know the output will be ridiculously small, but could someone please try making a Sansa c200 port?
-
This is the theme I am using right now. I love it, it gives my iPod such character.
-
Wow, this theme is the best!
But I have a big trouble(((
May anybody give me a font for this theme with russian letters???
I need it very much...
-
One option you have is to find the fonts you want to use in either TTF (TrueType) or OTF (OpenType) formats, and then convert them for rockbox using the rockbox font convertor utility
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/RockboxFontConvertor
-
hhannah, thank you very much!!!
