Title: big problems with new (stable) build, both 140 and 340
Post by: floatingkiwi on December 15, 2008, 11:47:39 PM
Hi Folks

I haven't upgraded my rockbox in a while, and have put  the version 3 stable build on both of my players - wow am I having problems!! (no other changes made)

140:  one of 2 things will happen when building the database, either it freezes at any random number of files or gives an error "*PANIC* Stkov tagcache".

340: either freezes as well when building database or gives this error "I03 addrErr at 310391F6"

The pertinent factor here is that I haven't added any other files or made any chages except for the new build.  I have tried completely deleting rockbox folder/tagcache etc as well to no avail.

I've moved this post. This wasn't a question about how to install Rockbox, so please don't post such questions in the Installation forums.

Have you tried running the newest version instead of the 3.0 release? (and there's no "Version 3", read it as a proper noun, a specific name for the build)

I felt none of the other forums quite fitted - obviously my I03 error.

Yes I have tried the newer builds, with no luck.  The older builds (before 3.0 release) did not give me any of these problems and were quite stable, and no file changes have been made to the players, so it does seem as if something is causing a crash somewhere. The H340 even freezes sometimes when just navigating around the menu, nothing to do with building the tagcache.
I have also tried moving all the music off the player and reformatting it.

Cheers

Matt

Could you tell exactly what revision you're running, and exactly what the error messages are with that revision?

A recipe for reproducing the problems would also be helpful, you may wish to try to track down which files it fails on.

Crashes and freezes when building the database are commonly caused by either a corrupted filesystem or some tag that causes our metadata readers to choke.
Since you tried reformating the player the filesystem should be fine.
So assuming it is cause by one or more of your files, that is if this is reproducible?
Try doing a binary search, by moving half of your music off the player and rebuilding the database, if it still crashes, move half of what's left off the player and repeat, if it doesn't crache after moving half the music off the player, move it back and move the other half.
This should leave only the fiel causing this so then please file a bug report and attach it.

(complete post concerning h140)

Well, I have tried the binary method of searching for the problem with bad results, and another problem:

I went through the process and appeared to find the folder that was causing the "*PANIC* Stkov tagcache" freeze.  However now the database creation process would just stop with no database being created, with the message "Building database...565 found (STOP to return)" which won't go away - however the player is not freezing, just can't create the database or play music.  So I thought I'd delete everything off the player and install Rockbox 3.0 again and try to create the database - still the above error with no files apart from Rockbox folder on the player!  arggh.

So, then put back the supposed *PANIC* creating folder to try and reproduce that error - and I can't!  it still stops on the "Building database.." error and won't create anything.

Any thoughts?  I have tried this on Rockbox 3.1 as well with no results.

There's no "version 3". Rockbox 3.0 or version 3.0 is a specific release, one singular build. It wasn't released in November, so if it started in November, you were using something newer than 3.0.
