Title: Looking for hard drive based player
Post by: laffinet on September 08, 2008, 12:52:51 AM
Hiya !

I've been using an Archos Jukebox Recorder since 2003 now and love it ! However, although it's still working great I know that one day it will day and I'll have to replace it.

Question: what with ?

Must have:
Rockbox compatibility (who would have guessed that...)
mp3 capable (all my collection is in mp3 and I don't want to start converting...)
Lots of space (at least 120GB, more would be good)

Should have:
Colour display
Replaceable batteries/standard batteries

Doesn't need to have:
Video playback

Any ideas/suggestions ?

Cheers.

Since Rockbox plays MP3s (among other formats), it will definitely be mp3-compatible.  Most hard-drive based players these days use built-in batteries, though they can be replaced with comparible batteries (possibly higher capacity in the same physical dimensions) and the proper tools if necessary.  As for space, the iPod 5.5G 80GB is the highest capacity without replacing the drive with a larger one.  That may be your best bet if you don't want to replace the hard drive.  If you're willing to replace the hard drive, you may prefer the Gigabeat F, as it's got a much more powerful processor.  Either way, you'll probably have to look on eBay for either DAP.
