Title: Upcoming release 3.0
Post by: Llorean on July 14, 2008, 09:00:22 PM
As many of you may know, at the recent Developer's Conference we decided to make a strong push to finally get a release version 3.0 of Rockbox out the door.

To this end, we will probably be making many tough decisions about whether or not some players are at a level of working functionality good enough to consider a "Release" version, and whether or not some features are reliable enough to be included in the version. These decisions will be decided by the developers, and will not be subject to voting. What I'm asking for here is merely any opinions: Do you, as the users, have any strong opinions on what players that you have personally used have significant problems big enough that you personally would not be comfortable with a build of Rockbox having a 3.0 release for it.

Here are some specific things to be aware of: This is NOT for highlighting bugs you think need to be fixed before the release. The release is going to happen. Any bug you mention here, you should assume it will not be fixed by the release, and be pointing it out because you personally think it's major enough to prevent a release for the player you own. The bug must occur in the current build and have a flyspray number.

When responding to this post, list the players you think are unsuitable for release, and the specific flyspray number for the bug. Do not bother describing the bug, if the flyspray description in insufficient add a comment there.

Also, the same applies to RBUtil: We would like to have a release version of this to go with the release of the software. In the case of it, list flyspray numbers of significant problems you feel should prevent it from already being considered a release version. That means major bugs folks.

Also, we are aware that accessibility features in RBUtil are not up to par, and wish to apologize but it's unlikely there will be any drastic improvement in the GUI version before the release in terms of the accessibility of RBUtil itself (voice /talk generation, on the other hand is something we want badly to work).

Please, JUST follow the directions in the original post. "Features not done yet" are an entirely different topic, I ONLY asked for BUGS WITH FLYSPRAY ENTRIES. I'm trying to gather very specific information here, not general opinions about the release.

Please keep this thread on topic.
Thank you for your time.

just thought i would post this here to as it's a update on this thread pretty much... http://www.rockbox.org/mail/archive/rockbox-archive-2008-08/0026.shtml .

but basically on Aug 15th they said this...

"We hope to have a release version 3.0 out within a couple (as in two)
weeks. If you have any specific questions relating to the release,
please reply to this thread. At the moment we're still discussing one or
two targets but, generally, nearly all of the targets that have builds
on the daily build page should be included in this release."

This bug stands out rather heavily to me.

any updates on the v3.0 release?

early September release or does it look like a late Sep release? (originally was supposed to be late Aug, right?)

No, the freeze was supposed to end at the end of August. The freeze ending is not the same thing as it being released. Please, just have some patience, we'll announce anything we decide needs announcing.

ok my bad... when the feature freeze was mid Aug i thought a late Aug or early Sep was the release of v3.0 but now i understand.

so basically it's just bug fixes from here on out until it's released then... but it's cool, cause i can wait. as i would rather wait a little longer for a quality release then have them release it to early and have glitches etc in it.

but i got a quick question if you have some time... i assume it would be better to clean install v3.0 (basically delete the entire .rockbox folder and recreate it from the v3.0 build) (once it's out) than to just overwrite the current builds like we currently do when going from daily update to daily update?

p.s. now that i know that ill make a guess and say the early half of October (maybe late October max) ;)

There's no reason you must do a clean install, but if files have been renamed or anything, a clean install will help avoid clutter or useless duplicates.

ok thanks for clearing that up now... so in other words i dont have to as it's not necessary but for good measure it's probably not a bad idea ;)

Well, for example, with the recent renaming of all the fonts you'll have an awful lot of duplicate fonts sticking around if you don't. BUT those duplicate fonts will be useful until all the themes are updated with the modern font names.

I uploaded test builds from the release branch to http://files.hostname.be/3.0RC/
Note that this is not the actual release, but it should be close to it. If you encounter serious problems with them, please let us know.

The connection times out whenever I try to access it. I was going to test the 3.0 RC on a few targets to make sure everything was working, but may have to roll some of my own builds to do that now.

There are also simulator builds now.

ill mess around with them and see what happens on my Sansa e250 ;)

EDIT: ... just wondering but i assume all the changes that you see in daily builds will be included in the v3.0 release?

or how does the v3.0 release work... is it based on a slightly older version?

Yes, the codebase was 'forked' a little while back to allow normal development to continue. Some commits have been made to both branches since then.

i see but i was just curious as to if all the stuff you see on main page will be in the v3.0 release like this stuff...

"MP3 synthesis filter on COP. Loads the MP3 synth filer on to the CoProcessor on all PortalPlayer devices, resulting in an ~90% speedup according to test_codec on the Sansa. Real world improvement is somewhat less, but still considerable. Allows MP3 decoding at 30MHz without boosting, or use of more DSP/EQ with less boosting/skipping, thus improving battery life. Minor changes to mpegplayer to retain compatibility with libmad changes. Should be no significant changes for other targets or codecs."

(which seems like it might be a all around solid boost to rockbox in general)

and stuff you see added on main page like daily.

cause the last i knew people where talking about releasing v3.0 on Tuesday which is about a couple days from now.

thanks for everyone's time

No, that won't be.  It hasn't been sufficiently tested and whilst is likely fine, may lead to additional instabilities.  The front page is only showing development branch commits, not release branch.  Since the feature freeze only bug fixes have been going into the release branch, nothing else.

Some mirrors simply haven't synced yet.  Give it some time and it'll get there.

how long? , cause it's been a while now and still 0byte files i keep getting and even the c200 (which someone above said worked) does 0byte files to (i dont need c200 series but i just seen if i can download it for a test)

p.s. sorry i dont mean to offend anyone but i just want the release... not that i need it THAT BAD but it's just cool cause it's a official release is all ;)

It works for some people because there are multiple mirrors, and they're getting the files from a different one than you are. Comparing which builds work doesn't mean anything.

If you can't get it in 24 hours, then post again.

ok thanks for your time Llorean...

any chance of getting a direct link to one that works? :) lol

EDIT: it appears it's finally working for me now.... i live in Michigan USA

EDIT #2: http://download.rockbox.org/release/3.0/rockbox-fonts-3.0.zip ... i assume those are the fonts for v3.0?

http://download.rockbox.org/release/3.0/ (appears to show all files for everyone ;) )

ThaCrip,

The download.rockbox.org name is the one used in the links you tried already. The name is a round robin DNS entry with three different servers and they are all synced independently (in time) from a master server.

Different requests can thus hit different servers and depending on the status of the syncing you can get slightly different results on recent data.

All download servers sync from the master every 60 minutes so these problems should never "live" longer than one hour.

ThaCrip:
Thanks for the hint with the font file. I would have missed it otherwise.

Why THE RUSH now with release 3.0  ???

The manual is missing from the download.
Rockbox is one of the better documented Open Source projects, why don't you use this advantage?
Not even a hint or link on the "releases" page...

In it, it says:
Quote
Choosing a Rockbox version
...
Release. The release version is the latest stable release, free of known critical bugs. The current stable release of Rockbox, version 3.0, is available at http://www.rockbox.org/download/.
...
Installing the fonts package
Rockbox has a fonts package that is available at http://www.rockbox.org/daily.shtml or
from the extras link in the menu on the Rockbox website. While the current builds and daily builds change frequently, the fonts package rarely changes and is therefore not included in these builds. When installing Rockbox for the first time, you should install the fonts package. The release version, on the other hand, does not change, so fonts are included with it.

But the fonts are missing from the release and the "releases" page also...

Fortunately I found both 'official' fonts and manual for my Sansa with the 'help' of ThaCrip, by reading forums (as usual, sad but true).

What is still missing is the 'official' voice file. I don't need it, but someone else has already mentioned that in the mail (see homepage).

Yes, I know, this would make quite a 'large' package.
And I also know that the majority of downloaders are people who upgrade, not new users. But a 'complete' package would be nice and convenient.

IMHO it should contain the firmware, manual and fonts.

Yes, there are some problems with this release. Most of that is caused by rockbox not having released in three years, which means we don't have the necessary routine to make things go smoothly.

We will learn from this, and the next release (which will not have to wait for three years, promise!) will be handled a lot better.

Thanks for the quick action.

Good to see the most important parts are now gathered on the 'releases' page.
No more hunting, no need to be an 'insider' anymore.

Very optimistic indeed. I wouldn't do that. To much stress...

"FS#5230 - Keypad HOLD doesn't let go until scrolling is used"

'Whenever the HOLD switch is turned off, the hold icon in rockbox disappears, but hold actually doesn't let go. I can't use any keys until scroling is used. Scrolling left or right is the only thing that actually switches off hold. It can be pretty annoying as I use HOLD a lot.'

someone also said... 'I would like to reconfirm that this bug is present in sansa e200 series DAPs as well...' (this comment was said on Sep 5th 2008)

my reply... i just tested this on mine using release version v3.0

my config is as follows...

------------------------------
# .cfg file created by rockbox r18518M-3.0-RC-080915 - http://www.rockbox.org

volume: -20
bass: 8
treble: 8
backlight timeout: 8
time format: 12hour
max files in dir: 200
backlight filters first keypress: on
brightness: 5
volume fade: off
rec format: mpa3
dircache: on
button light timeout: off
----------------------------------------------

and i have NO problems clicking play/pause/fast forward etc etc after i turn off hold and i dont have to use the scroll wheel as claimed in the bug report. (i.e. i dont get that issue on my e250)
