Title: [Low] Battery Issues
Post by: kchuk on August 01, 2006, 10:13:45 PM
I have had an iRiver H120 for almost 2 years now.

I have recently switched over to Rockbox and I've been using a July 28th bleeding edge build.

I was at low battery today (Rockbox said about 6%), so I put on the battery benchmark and ran a randomized playlist.

After 55 minutes, I came back and it was still playing. I looked at the Menu>Info screen that displays the remaining battery and it said 0% with 0 hours 0 minutes remaining.

It had some songs in the buffer, so I skipped a few to have it start reading the HDD.

At that point, the LCD backlight started to flicker in sync with the HDD light and the player was not able to read the song.

I turned it off at this point to avoid any potential problems, since it didn't appear to auto shut down when necessary.

I can post the battery_bench log tomorrow.

Is there anyway to get it to auto shutdown when it gets to 0%?

Rockbox definitely could shut down more gracefully, and I believe that some of the developers were discussing that issue on the IRC channel just today.  Nevertheless, the hardware shuts the player down at a battery level that is sufficiently high to avoid damaging the battery.

The problem (I think) has to do with the fact that on shutdown the disk spins up to save settings. This causes a dip in the power causing a reset. There's a patch in the tracker to force shutdown at an earlier point.
