Title: 4G Grayscale Ipod now has ATA Error: -1
Post by: replicant on March 04, 2008, 11:31:25 AM
Yesterday i turned on my 4G grayscale Ipod to be greeted by weird playlist related errors when I tried to queue up some music. So I figured I may need to update to the latest daily, so I saved my themes and such and deleted everything else and moved the files and folders from the daily build zip file into the .rockbox folder.

I ejected the ipod, then restarted it and was NOW greeted to super long loading Rockbox screen, then finally "ATA Error: -1"

I thought, oh crap, my hd is dead! So I restarted it again, this time loading into the Apple firmware, that worked fine (no music loaded there to test, but at least it loaded into the Apple Ipod firmware/os). Ok, next thing to try is making sure I can access the files on the hd of the ipod. Yup, files accessible, copy/move/delete-able and able to play the music off of that hd while it is connected to my computer. Next I tried repairing the drive from Disk utility on my mac. It didn't find any errors/problems.

So I'm left with a "what's next to try?". I read somewhere that other ATA Error codes were related to bloated batteries (not for the ipod but in some of the iriver players), so I popped her open and checked and the battery is fine.

I'm really at a loss here, and would definitely appreciate any help/suggestions.

Thanks.

An update.. I was trying to find an older build that i know worked for sure, so I found it and completely erased the .rockbox folder and used that old version and boom it worked just fine. You can imagine my excitement that it still works. :)

So to those of you with this odd error, you may be best to just wipe the entire  .rockbox folder and copy over an older confirmed working version or possibly a  fresh/new daily build but making sure to wipe the entire .rockbox folder instead of selectively deleting folders/files.

I have the same problem as you. Which build works with you? Does it have the new battery life enhancements?

Thanks

antony, i'm using the 011008 build right now, but was about to try yesterday's daily. i'm definitely wanting charging/battery enhancment features. right now it doesn't seem to charge over USB unless that is a setting that i forgot to change. Anyway, I'll let you know how the latest daily install goes.

When reporting things like this, you REALLY ought to mention that you've physically modified your hard disk. You mentioned in another thread you have a CF card in your iPod. As well, you really shouldn't post multiple messages with the same question in different places. Or post more than once when nobody has responded (use the modify button in stead). In fact, I'd strongly recommend you go and re-read the guidelines, as you seem to have missed several of them.

Llorean, unless I had a total lapse of memory, where else did I post with this question, because I really don't remember posting a question even remotely related to this elsewhere. Someone else had posted a question about their CF card mod not working, however that was not me. Seriously, please point me to where you saw that I posted a question about this error else where.

Thanks,

Sorry, I didn't separate my thoughts properly because I'm a bit overwhelmed. I should probably not moderate while I'm busy. ;)

The "specify you're using CF" should've been directed to antonyfirst, the "don't post twice in a row" to you, and the "don't post the same question in two threads" to him again. My apologies.

hahaha, wow ok, yeah deep breaths and take multiple breaks. :)

no worries, i appreciate the moderation none the less.

good luck with your work. :)

I didn't specify I was using a CF memory since after Replicant's post it was clear to me that the problem was with grayscale ipod itself & rockbox, and didn't involve the CF card.
Please also understand that I asked the "same question" here for a different purpose, which can be summed in "which build are you using?" :)

His problem is most likely different from yours, since ATA Error: -1 can come from different causes, and depends on the ATA hardware (which you two have different hardware there). So, it is relevant. You have the same *error message* as him. Nothing more, nothing less, until you investigate further.

Please, don't intentionally leave out when you've modified your hardware just because you think it's irrelevant.

Alright. It's sad anyway that I can't use rockbox. I bought the 32gb A-data hoping it would have worked. I cross fingers for future optimizations.

Awesome. Will it be ready soon?

ATA error -1 indicates that Rockbox wasn't able to access the HDD/CF at all (iiuc)

antony and llorean, for what it's worth, my 4th gen is modded with the same CF card. right now the only build that seems to work is my previous one from 1/10/08. i haven't had a chance to go through all of them between now and then to see where the changes started breaking. i reckon i could check the changelog and see for related code changes.

anyway, sorry for starting a mini-riot in this thread. can't we all just get along? (ok that was a lame reference)

antony, i'll go through the builds between 1/10 and 3/2 to see where the changes occurred that would affect anything with ATA data access or some such (really not sure what to look for, but i figure if the changelogs are relatively detailed enough, something may jump out). if all else fails, i'll just spend some time here and there trying different builds.

I'm checking now:

I started from these two:

The 2008-02-06 release works
The 2008-02-19 doesn't.

EDIT: Now I'm here:
The 2008-02-09 release works
The 2008-02-13 doesn't.

EDIT: The 2008-02-11 doesn't work

The latest working version of Rockbox (with 32gb A-Data CF) has to be either the 02-09 or 02-10. Checking now.

LAST EDIT!
The 2008-02-10 works! I'm going to test it.

Looking at the log, the subsequent build (02/11) contains Buschmann's improvements in battery life. So something must have changed with that upgrades.

I hate you Antony, i JUST finished going through that process and came to the exact same conclusion as you :P

haha, wish i would have checked back here FIRST :)

oh well, only took about 15 minutes or so to jump through them at various intervals like you did.

Hopefully Petur and Llorean will see this and can hopefully add back in whatever methods that were removed specifically for various types of ATA data access.

At least we know where we stand with it.

I have no idea if this will work on a 4G iPod but you could check out this patch by Petur.

How does it apply to rockbox? Thanks :)

You need to patch the source code then compile rockbox.  Check out www.rockbox.org/wiki/SimpleGuideToCompiling

Thanks. I still have a problem: my command prompt doesn't recognize both patch and diff commands (I installed both).
I placed the CF8 patch file in the same directory as rockbox in order to apply the patch, but the cmp keeps giving the same answer.

Are you using native linux, cygwin, VMWare, or co-linux?

I am using Windows, and downloaded the install version for it.

Which install version of what?  To compile under Windows you either need cygwin, VMWare or Colinux
