Firstly, welcome.

Now :

1) You should have posted in the Toshiba Install forum really, but,

2) Could you help us out with which bit of the installation process in the manual for the gigabeat is proving too difficult for you to understand ?

PS - You *really* shouldn't post with a title of simply "help!" - it's against the forum rules.

Welcome!  I'm guessing you have loaded Rockbox on your F10.  If not take a look at this: Install Instructions (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort#Installation_Instructions)

If your library was loaded onto your F10 with GigaRoom, you'll have to reload it without the .sat "encryption."  Instructions for that is here:
 Removing GigaRoom encryption (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort#Remove_SAT_Encryption)

One of the first things I would do, even before setting up your library, is load a new "WPS".  (WPS stands for While Playing Screen, but is basically a theme for what you remember as the Now Playing Screen.)  I would download the Cabbie WPS from here: Cabbie (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WpsGigabeatF#Cabbie) It's very easy to read and looks cool.  You can experiment with others.  You basically just download the zip file and extract it to your Gigabeat, choosing the "keep the file path structure" option.  In other words, make sure the files extract to the corresponding directories in the zip.

That's just to get you started.  I STRONGLY suggest you read the Rockbox manual found here:  Gigabeat Manual (http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-gigabeatf/rockbox-build.html)

If you have any questions, let me know.  I'll be glad to help out further to get you on your feet.  Good Luck.  And like they say: Once you go ... Rockbox, you'll never go back!

im sorry, i should have read the rules. and thanks for welcoming me. and i hope i am safely assuming that your second point wasnt just sarcasm.
i dont have the manual, and i cant find the installation cd - which is why i think the pc wont recognize the player while it is in the cradle.

nate, thank you for your time and your reply --i am going to try this tonight.
one further question - if i cant get the pc to recognize the f10 while it is in the cradle, can i still download rockbox to the f10 by going directly from the pc to the f10  ?
thanks in advance.

I'm a little unsure now of what you are trying to do.  I'm assuming that you are trying to install Rockbox, but you have the Gigabeat sitting in the cradle.
I'm sure by the time you read this you will have taken a look at the installation link.  From there, you will see that you should simply connect the Gigabeat to the pc via only a USB cable.  (It's also always a good idea to plug in the AC adapter.)

After rereading your original post, I think I get what you mean by:
Quote
when my f10 is in the cradle the computer doesnt see it.

If you want to keep the original firmware loaded, but Windows Explorer/Windows Media Player doesn't see your player in the cradle, you need to make  the PC Connections option -> set to "Windows Media Player 10."  You can find this on your Gigabeat.  Navigate to the Setup menu -> PC Connections -> Windows Media Player.  This makes it so that anytime you connect your Gigabeat to a pc via the USB/cradle it will always connect in WMP/UMSD mode.  Or, if GigaRoom isn't seeing your player whilst in the cradle navi to the same menu this time setting it to "gigaroom."  This will make the Gigabeat only recognizeable by GigaRoom when connected to a PC.  (Cradle or just straight USB)  Understand, using the cradle without Rockbox is cripled to USB 1.1 speeds.  Much slower transfers.

Not sure if that helps.  If you could specify what you are trying to do and where you are having the problem, we could more soundly point you in the right direction.

No it wasn't sarcasm. I was asking about the Rockbox manual, which we offer for download (see the menu at the left hand side of 99% of all rockbox.org web pages). We also don't offer our installation on a CD, that too is a download (under current build). Since you were posting on the Rockbox forums I assumed you were trying to install Rockbox on your Gigabeat - but having read your follow up post, I'm not sure if this is the case now?

ok, im sorry.

i want to download music to my f10. but i no longer have the installation software that came with it. and when i try to hook it up to my pc, my pc doesnt see it when it is in the cradle, but it does when i hook the f10 up directly to my pc, but i still cant download music to it. so after looking into the problem i see this link for rockbox and all these people saying how great it is -- so i downloaded rockbox to my pc. but i havent the faintest idea how to put the rockbox onto my f10. and i have no idea how to download music to it. like i said -- i am a complete idiot when it comes to this stuff. i was using the gigabeat and i saw an option that said "format" and of course i choose that option -so now there is no music at all on my f10--nothing at all.

it was my wife's but i gave up and bought her an ipod shuffle -so now the f10 is mine and i just want to use it.

im sorry to be wasting your time and for being a total dumbass -i just want my f10 to work.

thanks

As has been said, you should be reading the Rockbox manual and asking questions based on the parts of it that confuse you. There's a manual link to the left.

OK i did everything the manual told me to. but when i turned it off and back on--i get an error message that says "00100060" and "no system found on hdd"

 did i just screw this thing up ?

ok, i just noticed that i missed the period at the end of the bootloader rename part --- so i went in and fixed that -still says no system on the hdd.

on my player's drive are these three folders:

.rockbox
rockbox.gigabeat

fwimg---which contains fwim02, fwim03, and the fwimg01.dat.orig.

should i have anything else ?
been messing with this thing for hours now and cant get anything to work

Okay slow down and read each step carefully.  Follow each step explicitly.  If you have done so, you would still have a file named FWIMG01.DAT in the FWIMG folder.  You are replacing the original with one that will load Rockbox.

If you are following the "Install Instructions" link I posted:
Read the section labeled: "Upload the Rockbox bootloader ..."

If you are reading the manual follow the instructions in section 2.2.3.  You may have missed the last bullet of that section.

Let us know how it goes.

Post by: legion on February 26, 2007, 09:09:15 PM
ok, i followed them to the letter.

when i hook the f10 to the pc and i browse into the drive that has it - it has the programs i listed, and i just went and put the FWIMG01.DAT back in. it still says "no system found on hdd" .

can i safely delete all of it from the player and start over ? i messed with this thing for hours yesterday and i keep getting the no system on hdd message.

thanks

on my player's drive are these three folders:

.rockbox
rockbox.gigabeat

fwimg---which contains fwim02, fwim03, and the fwimg01.dat.orig.

This looks completely wrong.
At the root (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_directory) level of your Gigabeat you should have :

.rockbox
GBSYSTEM
rockbox.gigabeat

where .rockbox and GBSYSTEM are folders, and rockbox.gigabeat is a file.

Inside GBSYSTEM you should have :

FONTS
FWIMG
IMAGE
MUSIC
MDB.DAT

where FONTS, FWIMG, IMAGE and MUSIC are all folders, and MDB.DAT is a file.

Finally, inside FWIMG, you should have :

FWIMG00.DAT
FWIMG01.DAT                      <-- The rockbox bootloader
FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG             <-- The original bootloader
FWIMG02.DAT

So please tell us exactly what you have, because I think what you posted above is either wrong because you've told us incorrectly, or wrong because you've moved stuff around on your Gigabeat, in which case you're possibly in real trouble.

i had formatted the gigabeat before i ever downloaded rockbox - this erased everything.

the only files i have are the ones i listed above.

i still have gbsystem - but all mine lists inside it is fonts and fwimg

if my gbsystem file is incomplete can i get another one somewhere ?

Title: Re: Some general Gigabeat install questions.
Post by: GodEater on February 27, 2007, 10:16:23 AM
If you formatted the Gigabeat, you wouldn't have GBSYSTEM at all. So is this something you created yourself, or did you merely attempt to delete everything on it ?

Are you certain it contains nothing else? Have you made sure that Windows Explorer is allowing you to see Hidden and System files ?
Title: Re: Some general Gigabeat install questions.
Post by: legion on February 27, 2007, 04:36:49 PM
i got the gbsystem file from one of the pages on the rockbox manual.

i opened up the hidden files.

i didnt intend to delete everything on it, i just hit the button that said "format" and that deleted everything on it.

This may help.  I would get a second opinion before doing this though.

Download the GBSYSYTEM.zip file found at the bottom of the Gigabeat F/X Port page: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort

Format your Gigabeat again.  Unzip the GBSYSTEM.zip you downloaded from above, onto your PC.  Where ever you unzipped that file you should now see another GBSYSTEM.zip and a text file.  Unzip this GBSYSTEM.zip into the root of your Gigabeat.  If your Gigabeat is drive K:, then right click the zip file and select "extract all."  (For XP) In the Extraction Wizard, click next.  Then it will ask for a destination to extract the files.  Type the drive letter that is your Gigabeat.  (For example K:\)  Click next.  After it finishes extracting you should only have the following directory structure on your Gigabeat:
K:\
   * GBSYSTEM
      * FONTS
      * FWIMG
->Files: FWIMG00.DAT
             FWIMG02.DAT
Download the bootloader from:  here.  (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/viewfile/Main/GigabeatFXPort?rev=4;filename=bootloader.zip)

markun: that bootloader is outdated, please use http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/gigabeat/FWIMG01.DAT

Inside the bootloader.zip file, extract FWIMG01.DAT into the K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG directory.  Extract the bootsplash.raw into the root of K:\

Continue following the installation instructions line for line.  Again, here's the link:  Installation Instructions  (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort#Installation_Instructions) or the manual here:  Rockbox Gigabeat Manual  (http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-gigabeatf/rockbox-buildch2.html#x4-80002.2)

If this doesn't work for you, I would suggest you abandon trying to load Rockbox.  Call the Toshiba technical support line.  Ask them to send you the Firmware update/installation cd.  I hear they will do it free of charge.

Good luck.  Let us know what happens either way.

yes, when i went to search for the files, i opened the part that allowed me to see hidden files.

i have gbsystem in another file because when i couldnt find the installation cd i went to my old pc and copied everything that had gigabeat on it, ie gbsystem, and gigabeat room. but without the installation cd i couldnt get it to work so thats how i found myself at the rockbox forums. by the way-thank u guys for all of your help so far - i know it must be aggravating trying to recue noobs like me all day.

so should i format it again and delete everything or is there another way ?

ok, layout as follows:

when i first open it:
gb system                                    bootsplash

bootsplash raw                             FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG.

ok, when i click on gbsystem:
gbsystem                                              read me

when i click on gbsystem again:
gbsystem
when i open that:

fonts                                     fwimg

when fonts is opened:

fntja                   fntzh

fntzt                    fntzt24

when i open fwimg:

fwimg00                                 fwimg02

ok, so what i am missing or what have i screwed up ?

- your GBSYSTEM folder shouldn't be in another GBSYSTEM folder, but in the root of your player!
- you didn't install the bootloader: FWIMG01.DAT

Why don't you remove everything (no need to format), unzip the CONTENT of GBSYSTEM.ZIP to your Gigabeat (so don't unzip it to "GBSYSTEM" as that will create a new directory and put everything in there) and copy the bootloader (FWIMG01.DAT) to the GBSYSTEM\FWIMG folder

If X: is your Gigabeat the bootloader should be located at X:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG01.DAT

After installing the bootloader you need to unzip rockbox.zip and rockbox-fonts.zip to your Gigabeat as well (again, the content, don't create 2 dirs called rockbox and rockbox-zip). For the first file go to the 'current build' section, for the second you go to 'extra'. Both onder 'download' at the top of this page on the left side.

If you still can't do it, either get help from a friend or just give up...

Okay - there's a little inconsistency in what you've written, but I'm going to put those down to typos on your part (i.e. you've written "gb system" in one place, and "gbsystem" in another - those are different folder names, but I assume you didn't mean to put the space in the first one).

So from what you've said, you've got this layout :

Code: [Select]
--
 |-GBSYSTEM
 | |-GBSYSTEM
 | | |-FONTS
 | | | |-FNTZH.DAT
 | | | |-FNTZT24.DAT
 | | | |-FNTZT.DAT
 | | | |-FNTJA.DAT
 | | |-FWIMG
 | | | |-FWIMG00.DAT
 | | | |-FWIMG02.DAT
 | |-readme.txt
 |-bootsplash
 |-bootsplash.raw
 |-FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG

There are a couple of things I'm not clear on though - like where your FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG has come from. On a "normal" gigabeat install, this should be the FWIMG01.DAT that arrived on the player from Toshiba, but you've stated twice now that you formatted the player before attempting to install Rockbox - so there wasn't an original firmware. So where did that one come from ?

Leaving that aside from now - your folder layout is wrong.
There should be only one GBSYSTEM folder, and you have two. So take the contents of the second one (the one with FONTS and FWIMG in it) and move those back up into the first one.

Next, take the rockbox bootloader file that you downloaded (the FWIMG01.DAT file) and put that into the FWIMG folder along with the FWIMG00.DAT and FWIMG02.DAT files you already have there.

You also now seem to have removed the .rockbox folder and the rockbox.gigabeat file you told us you had earlier. Please put those back exactly where you had them before.
Title: Re: Some general Gigabeat install questions.
Post by: Nate! on March 01, 2007, 10:33:30 AM
I think I know what happened.  In reading your post I noticed that you have the GBSYSTEM folder inside another GBSYSTEM folder with a readme.txt.

In my instructions, if you'll remember, I said unzip the GBSYSTEM.zip file onto your pc.  The reason for this is because, inside that zip file is ANOTHER zip file that contains the Folder you actually need to extract.

So, save the GBSYSTEM.zip file from the Wiki to C:\temp.  When you extract it you will have a C:\temp\GBSYSTEM folder.  Inside that folder you will have another GBSYSTEM.zip and txt file.  Extract THAT zip file, ie. C:\temp\GBSYSTEM\GBSYSTEM.zip, onto your Gigabeat's root.  (K:\)  Once you do this, then you can continue with the install instructions.

Download the bootloader.zip from the bottom of the Wiki.  Extract IT onto the root of your Gigabeat.  Doing so will automagically put FWIMG01.DAT in the K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG directory.

Download the latest build.  Extract IT to the root of your Gigabeat.  Now you should have the .rockbox folder, rockbox.gigabeat, and bootsplash.raw files in the root of your Gigabeat.

If you do this correctly, your Gigabeat's file structure SHOULD look like this:

(K:\) being the root of your Gigabeat.  It may be a different letter on your PC.

K:\
   * K:\GBSYSTEM\
      * K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\
         * K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\FNTJA.DAT -> This and the next 3 are files.
         * K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\FNTZH.DAT
         * K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\FNTZT24.DAT
         * K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\FNTZT.DAT
      * K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\
         * K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG00.DAT -> This and the next 2 are files.
         * K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG01.DAT
         * K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG02.DAT
   * K:\.rockbox\
   * K:\bootsplah.raw -> This is and the next 2 are files.
   * K:\rockbox.gigabeat
   * K:\gigabeat.conf

once again, thank you for your continued patience. i will try this and if i still cant get it to work then i am going to walk out on my deck and throw the damn thing into the canyon, because a) i am too dense to use it and b) i have spent so much of my time (and all of yours) on it that i could just go buy an ipod like my wife has and not have any of this headache lol.

cant believe i redid the whole thing and didnt even notice i no longer had the two rockbox files on it lol

Maybe my faster boot zip wasn't such a good idea.... looks like it's causing problems if people aren't reading the readme. That GBSYSTEM folder is not meant to be all the rockbox files he needs, it just replaces the orinal firmware files that the bios checks with empty/nearly empty files. There is no FWIMG01.DAT included in my zip because that is occasionaly updated and it was already on that wiki.

I apologize. If someone agrees that I made a mistake by posting the GBSYSTEM on the wiki please take it off. I don't have the access to. Would it be a better idea to make a new wiki page for faster gigabeat boot?

Phalangees:  I think your zip is good.  I put instructions to extract the zip within that zip to the right place, and also to download the bootloader at the bottom of the same wiki.  Not sure where the disconnect is actually.

I personally use your faster boot setup.  So definately leave it up there.  Thanks.

ok. Just make sure you have a backup of your origianl firmware otherwise, if dual boot is ever supported, you won't be able to.

anyone know what i gotta do just to get it back to normal?

I'm really sorry you've decided to give up with rockbox :(

You might like to try downloading the "Rbutil" tool and trying that - it's recently acquired the ability to install rockbox on all our platforms at the click of a button or two. It might be able to sort out your gigabeat for you.

Alternatively - find someone who's a bit more comfortable with computer things than you are and let them give it a go - I'm convinced your gigabeat isn't beyond hope.

Oh, it seems you are so close!
* Now what you need to do is download the attached zip file.
 * It's actually a zip file, so you will need to rename it to  GBSYSTEM.zip.  (Minus the .txt at the end.)
* Unzip the zip file to the to the root of your Gigabeat.  (Unzip to K:\ where K:\ is the drive letter of your Gigabeat.)
* You can either run the rbutil again and let it copy your FWIMG01.DAT file to the K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\ directory.  Or you can copy it there yourself.

Disconnect the Gigabeat from your PC and the AC adapter.  Switch the battery slider off and  then on again.  Then power it back up again.  (Make sure the battery switch on the bottom is set to on.)

You should boot into Rockbox!

I think this is actually my mistake.   ::) I just tried to download the GBSYSTEM.zip that I attached.  It seems there's issues with changing the file extension.  It must corrupt the zip file.

Instead, go to the bottom of the Gigabeat port page and download that GBSYSTEM.zip.  GBPort  (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort)

I've updated and tested the zip myself.  So unzip it to the root of your Gigabeat.  (Unzip to K:\, K:\ being the drive letter assigned to your Gigabeat.)

Once you do this, now you can either run the rbutil again or just copy the fwimg01.dat file to the K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG directory.

If you still can't get it let me know.  What country do you live in?  If you are here in the US, maybe we can chat online or by phone.

It would really pay dividends if you specify the specific errors you are getting.

The flash memory (which we can't change) is programmed to look for the file FWIMG01.DAT in the \GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\ Directory.  So we take the one that originally comes with the Gigabeat from the factory, rename it to FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG (ie original) and replace it with a file of our own design also called FWIMG01.DAT.  Okay, in actuality the flash memory loader is also looking for a few other files in that same directory, as well as some in GBSYSTEM\FONTS\ and I believe that this has been discussed to death above.

Our version of FWIMG01.DAT calls upon rockbox.gigabeat which is located in K:\, and rockbox.gigabeat calls upon settings, plugins, etc located in the .rockbox folder which IS K:\.rockbox

Can someone offer to remote desktop or vnc to legion's computer for just this one time and 1. make it work so legion isn't so frustrated, and 2. document what legion did wrong so that we can improve on the installation documentation?

With no intent to insult legion, but if a user manages to screw up our installation instructions, it means we haven't done our job by dumbing it down to the level of the most inexperienced user.

Legion, if you have MSN messenger, please send me a PM with your msn address and I will try to help you out.  If not, give me your time zone and we can try to determine a time that we can meet in the Gigabeat IRC channel (i figure it will be less crowded than the rockbox channel).  Your frustration is frustrating me, and what little I can do to alleviate this for both of us may improve both of our sanities.

To anyone who stumbles across this post in future: this is a one time offer for legion only, assuming Nate's solution doesn't work.

Well, the big screw up likely wasn't in our installation instructions, it was that he decided to format his gigabeat first, I think.

ok, extracted the new gbsystem to the root of my player -- opened gbutil and pressed the bootloader install -- errored out again --says:

rbutil error---the installation has failed and gives the option to close or details.

in details it says :bootloader add:[err]coud not find D:\\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG01.DAT

does this mean i actually dont have the bootloader and that is why it wont install ? this program finds it and installs it right? but i guess i have to have it to find it.

yes---i am a complete and utter moron -- but i am learning! two weeks ago i didnt know  what a bootloader or a root was lol

off to play cards -- at least thats something i can do right---sorta.

Okay, this is what I'd like you to do.

First, figure out what drive letter your gigabeat is. I think it's D:, but I'm not sure. Do this by plugging it into your computer, and going to My Computer, and seeing which one it is there.

Then, click Start, then Run. In the Run prompt, type
Code: [Select]
cmd and click the 'Ok' button.

You should get a black window, with text. If your gigabeat is the D: drive, type
Code: [Select]
D: in that window, and hit enter. If it's the E: drive, type
Code: [Select]
E:, or whatever is appropriate for the drive letter it is.

Once you have done that, type
Code: [Select]
cd gbsystem and hit enter. Then type
Code: [Select]
dir /s > ../info.txt Be very careful to type this exactly. Then hit enter. Then type
Code: [Select]
exit and hit enter. The window should go away.

Go to My Computer again and double click on your gigabeat. There should be a file called info.txt on it now. Come back here, and reply to this post. Click the actual "Reply" button, don't use the quick reply window at the bottom. Then at the new page click the Additional Options link. You should see the option to attach a file. Use that to attach the info.txt from your gigabeat to your reply. It should give us information useful for figuring out exactly what is going wrong.

I know the instructions seem a bit complicated, but take your time, and make very sure you do exactly what I've said, and there's a good chance we'll at least know what's happening (I can't promise we'll be able to help once we do, but it'll be a good start).

Okay, this shows the FMIMG01.DAT file is still missing.

You'll need to download this file:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/viewfile/Main/GigabeatFXPort?rev=4;filename=bootloader.zip

Then extract it to somewhere on your computer, into a folder. You should see three files. Bootsplash.raw, bootsplash.bmp and FWIMG01.DAT.
In the window where the FWIMG01.DAT file is. Right-click on FWIMG01.DAT, and choose the "Copy" option from the menu that pops up.

Now, leaving that folder still open, minimize or move it so you can double click on My Computer again. In the bar at the drop of My Computer where it says "Address" type
Code: [Select]
D:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMGand hit enter.

Then, in some of the white space, right click and choose "Paste". If that works you should see the FWIMG01.DAT file show up there. Then close both windows, and properly eject your Gigabeat.

hell yeah.

transferring off of limewire is a bit tedious cause i can only drag and drop one at a time (i think) .

but the ones i had from my old kazaa file went wicked easy --- copied and transferred 200 songs in like two minutes ---beautiful!

thanks!

now i just have to learn the rockbox menu lol
