Title: Escape key
Post by: Neil Parks on October 30, 2014, 03:04:45 PM
I have installed Rockbox on an Ipod Nano (1st gen) and a Sansa Clip+.

On both, there are times when I press the wrong key (usually while I'm listening to a playlist) and find myself in a configuration screen that I don't know how to get out of.  Usually it's the one that selects shuffle and repeat on or off.  I don't want either of those on.

One time I blundered into a screen with several numbers.  Across the top it said (I think) "Rate 100%", and other numbers on the left and right.  I didn't know what these numbers do, so I certainly did not want to change any of them.

Rockbox needs an "Escape" key.  It might be different for different hardware--e.g. "long left" on one player and "power" or "long home" on another.  But whatever key it is, it should consistently have one single function--cancel the current screen without saving any changes, and go directly one step back.

I think the power button will do that on most devices.

If you're like to make suggestions for specific screens, people might consider them.

If the unit has one.  The Clip+ does, but the Nano 1G does not.

If I knew what the screen was supposed to do, I might do that.  But all it has is "Rate 100%" in the middle and "2%" on both sides.  And all four instinctive arrows change the numbers in some way.  Any screen like that is the "specific screen" in question.

In addition to an escape key to bail out, that kind of screen should be made harder to get into in the first place.

That would be the pitch screen.  The manual describes it and gives the keymaps for all the screens by the way.

But those keymaps could be wrong!  I can now replicate part of the problem.

The Clip+ manual says that in WPS, the Play key is supposed to toggle play and pause.   Well, guess what:
IT DOESN'T DO THAT.  Instead, it opens that feshtunkena "pitch screen"!

I just tested and hitting play does toggle play/pause.

So why is mine different?

Your play key toggles the play and pause, just as it is supposed to.

My play key opens the unwanted Pitch Screen.

So how can you say they are not different?

I thought maybe there was something in my installation that might somehow have gotten corrupted, so I used RB Utility to completely uninstall Rockbox, switch back to plain Sansa, and then re-install Rockbox--keeping the pdf manual open in another window to make sure I was doing everything by the book.

Guess what the Play button does now!

Give up?  OK, I'll give you a hint:
IT OPENS THE "PITCH SCREEN"!

I suspect you're doing something wrong, but its also possible your player is somehow broken such that the keys don't register correctly.  Not sure how that would happen though.

I guess anything is possible, but with the plain Sansa firmware the keys all seem to do what is expected of them.

I have, after much intensive googling, just learned that a Clip+ running OF can do everything that I thought I needed Rockbox for.

With the old Ipod, I hated and despised Itunes.  Switching to Rockbox was a no-brainer.  Putting my audio files onto the player by simply copying them, and editing M3U playlists with a plain text editor--the difference was like night and day.

The Clip+ manual does not say so, but it seems that all Sansas can work with M3U.  It's a secret that San Disk has kept well-hidden--even more well-hidden than Rockbox has kept the trap door into the pitch dark pitch screen.

(Although it isn't made clear, the M3U example file on that page assumes that the three mp3's are located in separate subdirectories named "1", "2", and "3".)
