Title: H10 hangs on bootloader after upgrade to 60g
Post by: embedit on January 26, 2007, 06:37:32 PM
I obtained a Hitachi Travelstar C4K60-60 1.8" Hard Drive Slim model and installed in my H10 (yes, it fits - photos to come).  After formatting it to fat32 and restoring all the files from the original 20g drive on it, it boots, but hangs in the Rockbox boot screen.

I tried the original iRiver firmware and that works fine.

Is there anything that needs to be done to the rockbox boot code to make it work on a 60g drive?

Any help would be appreciated.

-Dan

PS The drive model is HTC426060G8CE00.  It's the same as the original except:
1. It's 1mm thicker (8mm).
2. The interface is ATA-7 (same as ATA-6 but can go faster - 133m)

This may be a similar problem to that we've encountered with the 80GB disk drive in the latest 5.5G iPod - in that it doesn't support 512 byte sector transfers. It might be worth hanging onto the drive for a while until LinusN completes his masterwork on the ATA code to support larger sector sizes.

Thanks for the info.
Waiting (almost) patiently.

Let me know if you need me to test this on the H10.

Well, LinusN is making progress - I tested a new patch he'd made to the FAT handling code today.

I am forced to wonder though - when you say "Let me know if you need to test this on the H10" do you know what you're volunteering for?

LinusN's first words to me were "this may corrupt all the files on your player". If your response to this statement is "I don't care", then you may possibly be asked to test as well. But if by testing you mean you expect to get a look at some early code which just "works" then perhaps you're not really volunteering to test at all ?

Short of bricking my unit, I am prepared for anything (everything backed up).
I realize bricking is very unlikely (near impossible) since we're not re-flashing.

[cop_out]I am an embeded coder myself (heating controls) and wish I had the time to contribute to this project.[/cop_out]

[gush]I really appreciate the commitment in time and energy all of you have made over the years to this.[/gush]

At what stage does it hang? What does it say on the screen?

If I remember it correctly, it stopped in the bootloader screen after it identified the drive.  I don't know if  it got to "Loading rockbox...", but it definately didn't get to the logo screen.

I went back to the original firmware and that worked fine.

I am trying to resolve another problem (accidentally put it on charge with a 9v adapter) and I think I fried the battery.

If you need anything more specific, please let me know and I hasten the repair to find out for you.

Hi

I was wondering if you had the pictures of how you installed your hard drive?

I was also wondering whether it was the 20GB version you updated, or the 5GB version?

It is obviously a 20g player, as he used a 1.8" hard drive (Which wouldn't fit in the case of the 5g at all)

Yes, mine was the 20gb version.  (The 5gb uses a 1" drive).
I will post pictures very soon.

I'm aware that it's probably a 20gb version, however he says that he used an ATA drive.  However, as far as I know, you can only use ZIF drives.  I'm just waiting on the pics to see how he installed it so I can fix my own one.

ATA is an interface spec.  Not the connector used.  You are thinking of IDE which would be the pin header connector.  You need to get the slim version of the drive with a zif connector (hitachi model HTC426060G8CE00).  This drive is 1mm thicker than the original and the cable is a little offset from the original which necessitates trimming one of the blue rubber mounts to fit it.  You must be careful to re-use the gold tape and gold pillows on the original because these items provide ground connectivity in case of static discharge.   I will post pictures as soon as I can.

Don't know if it's due to the recent ATA fix for the 5.5 gen ipod or the boot loader change made on 20-March, but the 60gb ATA-7 upgrade I made now works fine!  The only glitch is a panic stop when I plug in the usb when it's on.

Thanks all very much for your hard work.

Where abouts can you buy a Hitachi C4K60 Slim 60Gb ???

I live in Canada and can't seem to find anywhere to pick up one of these hard drives.

Any advice would help!

I plugged 'HTC426060G8CE00' into a google product search and it came up with a few sources.
They're not cheap, but available.

Hi,

Saw your post about upgrading your H10 with the Hitachi 60gb drive.

How exactly did you do it? I purchased one and the internal HDD cable the H10 has is too thick for the 60 GB drive I purchased.  Did you have to force the cable in?? Because the original 20 GB drive has the flap up top to slip the HDD cable into it. This HTC426060G8CE00-60GB 4200RPM ATA 1.8" SLIM HD  has the Zif connection but a much smaller mechanism up top and smaller prongs to hold the HDD cable. I have the option to return it to the seller (bought it on Ebay) BUT if you were able to fit this and there is a chance it CAN fit, I really want to try. Did you have to trim the cable?? However wouldn't that damage the leads on it?

My ultimate question is this: Are we limited to Hitachi drives for use in the H10 20gb??
Do you think the Toshiba Zif drives: Toshiba MK3008GAL 30GB, MK4008GAH 40GB, MK6008GAH 60GB, etc can be used instead??

Any help is appreciated

The 60gb drive should have a flap also, but it might be a little different (don't remember exactly how it looked).   The only issue I had is that it was a little off center, so I had to trim one of the blue rubber mounts.  I will try to dig up the pictures I took to send or post.

Just wanted to bump this to see if you found any of the pictures you took of the process. I'm very interested in upgrading to a 60GB drive, but I want to make sure I actually know what I'm doing (at least vaguely) before I go diving in there.

Also, thanks for all the information you've provided in this thread so far! It's been extremely valuable to my "research." :)

I put a new Toshiba 80gig in my H10. I then loaded rockbox and it works perfectly.
Has this sector thing been fixed? because I did not see this problem at all.

joust, you say you used an 80gig?  think you could post the model you used?  i'd love to have that kind of storage!

Hello,

Thought I'd chime in. This is the model number of an 80gb Toshiba drive I installed in my H10: MK8009GAH.

It was roughly 1mm thicker, but the different thickness was only in the center the edges being thinner. It fit very easily. I did have to trim the rubber thing so the connector could be moved over a little. Also, and this is important, the connector itself calls for a thinner ribbon cable. The existing one has a "backer" on it which I "suppose" could be forced into the Toshiba drive but I very carefully scraped the extra material off of it. It worked very well that way and still can be used on the orig HD if needed, though it will be a little loose.

Also, I had trouble formatting it in the H10 itself. I never did find out why, but I simply installed it in an ext enclosure and loaded everything from the original HD before placing it in the H10. From that point, I can access it as normal and functions perfectly

You might check on the "MisticRiver" forum site for more info as there is a lot there.

I also installed a 2200mah battery with no problems at all. These 2 mods, and of course adding RB, made a really nice player out of it.

Would you be willing to put together a detailed tutorial on how to do it? I'd love to give it a whirl...

Hello.. i'm interesting in mod my H10 to 60 or 80 GB. Is possible to obtain photos of this modification?

Is possible to use the toshiba hard disk? or exist any incompatibility.

Thank you for your help.

As long as the drive is only 5mm in thickness and uses a ZIF connector you should be alright. I don't know of any incompaitbilities with certain manufacturers or the like.
