Title: [fixed]Help - Result "-5" cannot reinstall cowon firmware Really lost now...
Post by: datapark on March 15, 2008, 11:36:21 PM
Ok, some time ago, I installed rockbox on my 20gb X5.

After trying it for a bit I wanted to go back to the original cowon fw but that just ended up with loads of errors and a huge headache. I finally figured out how to reinstall rockbox then (i had screwed it up by trying to install the cowon fw) but eventually by dumb luck I managed to correct the problem.

So... with a new MP3 player on the way, I figured it was safe to go ahead and try to go back again to the cowon firmware. This time I would arm myself with the benefit of having read the manual as opposed to just assuming I know what I'm doing.
Well, no go.
Several hundred result: -1 errors later and I can't seem to install either of them anymore. I have finally gotten to the point of actually asking here because the last error I got was "result -5".  Now I really think I've screwed the pooch...

Would anyone have any idea how to help me?
If an X5 user could even make a copy of the basic folder structure and zip it for me, it might help and see if I'm missing anything.  I really should've considered backing up the unit BEFORE attempting to install this, but hindsight, yada yada.
I'd prefer to go back to the cowon firmware, but right now i'll settle for the rockbox and being able to use it.

To note, I am making sure to follow the manuals instructions. I have gotten the actual firmware screen the last dozen times, but I still get the same error. Although I only get the firmware install with the rockbox loader. I can't get the cowon firmware to flash the disk anymore it seems.

*sigh*

Any help is really appreciated

Thank you.

Could you type out the full error messages?  -1 usually means you have installed the bootloader but not the build, i.e. you haven't correctly unzipped rockbox.zip to the disk.

If you want to go back to the Cowon firmware, this should be possible without  taking care of the state Rockbox is in at all. The Cowon loader (pre bootloader) which controls the firmware upgrade process is still there. This is also the one active when you connect your player to USB when it's turned off. So you would need to connect your player this way and just follow the instructions on how to "upgrade" your firmware - as you can find them on Cowon's site: www.cowonglobal.com - support, firmware upgrade (http://www.cowonglobal.com/zeroboard/view.php?id=B15&page=1&sn1=&divpage=1&bmenu=support&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&keyword=firmware&select_arrange=headnum&bmenu=support&desc=asc&no=358&bmenu=support) (you might need to create the mentioned FIRMWARE directory if it doesn't exist on your player currently and maybe clear the .rockbox directory afterwards).

Important: this is my understanding of the situation, maybe someone else can chip in who knows more but either way, I'd read the above link thoroughly before continuing.

P.S.: Please give your thread a more descriptive title, this is not only abiding by the posting guidelines but could help you getting more replies (for example I often only "click" on thread titles which sound interesting and where I know what the thread could be about).

Result -5

Its kind of hard to read anything else, its only on the screen for about a second.

Yup
Been there. Its also the exact same method used to install the rockbox loader. When I try loading rockbox, i'll get the firmware screen. When I try loading cowon, it starts up the rockbox bootloader and I get the error message. When I reconnect the player to my PC the x5 bin file is missing from the FIRMWARE folder.

I edited my title. Hopefully it attracts some more hits. But thank you to the both of you for your help.

edit : OK, I just tried it all AGAIN with the cowon firmware and this time it actually worked. I've got 2.10e installed and it seems to be fine.

I have no idea what I did as I did everything exactly the same as I did yesterday.

Wow.

Thanks again to both of you. I appreciate it. :)
