Title: ipod nano 1st gen flash upgrade
Post by: Z_side on October 09, 2011, 07:09:30 AM
I have an ipod nano 1st gen for many years. It has 1GB storage.
But 1GB is not enough for me. I`d like to upgrade it to 4GB.(I know nano1 has up to 4GB version)
I tear it down few days ago and found there is a empty slot for nand flash. And the 1GB flash is "Hynix" HY27UH088G2M.
Is there anyone did this before and did it work after upgraded the flash?
I checked this flash, it is a SLC. Is there any restriction for me to use SLC or MLC?

Do you want to know my honest opinion? The nano 1G is an already very old device, and it might not be worth the effort and the money to upgrade its memory (plus, as you stated, 4GB is the maximum memory supported by the original firmware). You could consider buying one of the Sansas supported by Rockbox, as they aren't very expensive (even those with a color screen and 8GB+SD memory) and might be more worth than updating the memory on an already old device (unless you get the memory chips for free or real cheap, and you're sure you won't break the device while putting the new chips).
This is, of course, just my opinion.

yeah, but with not much care about the price, I just want to do some modding.(I happened to have few flash chips.)
Anyway, thank you for your suggestion.
