Title: Support for external morse code key
Post by: kapu on July 09, 2011, 11:53:34 PM
Is there already a way to connect a custom ipod wire to
a morse key. I have a j-37 with a leg strap and would like to
use it for text entry. I do not like to use the buttons on my
ipod for this because it is an awful lot of unnecessary wear.
I am also looking for a way to do this with a blackberry.
thanks

also, is there a port of ed for rockbox?

My dream is to use a morse key as input device
and ed as the means of editing files.
I am pretty sure I will have to do it myself, but, hopefully, someone
has done it already. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the morse
option. How effing awesome would it be to be able to drive your car
and edit files via ed all without taking ones eyes from the road?
I could use my entire commute time to edit files.

Depending on what player you have, you could probably hack up either a GPIO on the dock connector, or the line in pin to accept whatever sigal a "j-37" produces.  Sounds like a fun project.  Good luck.

Thanks. I am almost certain that there must be pinouts available on the web. I am guessing that it will be a somewhat simple project. I was wondering if some ham had already done this. The buttons on any device would die an early death if used frequently as a morse key. I will do the necessary research and jury rig a wire. I will remember to make the results available here for posterity.

Also, any morse key will just be a simple switch. on or off.

I'm not sure how this will work, to be honest.
But, best of luck.

To navigate the file you are editing/whatever, you are still going to have to use the physical buttons located on the player, as IIUC morse input is limited solely to text input.
If you make a mistake, not only will you not be able to see that you have made it, but, you won't be able to do anything about it.

You will also have a rather limited set of characters to play with, iiuc, only latin digits and numerals 0~9.

What if this became a feature on rockbox?

Take my Sansa E280 as a reference.

If on the keyboard screen you tapped the record button it goes to another screen where you can use one button of your target ( say the Sansa's middle key ) to use for morse input. To get back into the regular keyboard for special symbols, you press the record key again.

Not as cool as using a real morse code input though.  ;)

You have just described functionality that is already in Rockbox.

Ask a stupid question...

If you want to enter morse code?  Quicker etc. if you know how to.
