Title: iPod Class 6G - Boot loader USB mode error?
Post by: MM on May 12, 2021, 10:42:16 PM
I was installing Rockbox on iPod 6Generation and the attached message popped up. I did what it said and then it said something about formatting it. I hit that and now all it says is:
Rockbox bootloader
Version: 1.0
Battery status: ok 3860 MV
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load Rockbox.iPod:
file not found

Entering USB mode...
bootloader usb mode

Can someone help me to fix this. I can't seem to move forward from here. I'm not very tech savvy, so please use simple terms I can understand. I haven't unplugged it because I was afraid I might lose something. I've tried turning it on and off again but the screen with the above message stays the same.

Thanks.

I don't know much about the iPod ports but it sounds like it formatted it and the rockbox install is no longer present. I'd see what comes up when you trigger USB disk mode. You may have to reinstall the rockbox files (everything under the .rockbox directory).

Normally that should work if you just do what it says - reboot it manually with centre/menu, then it reboots and remounts and the installation continues.  Not sure what you mean by "something about formatting it".  Was that a windows message?  Possibly windows got confused about the device and asked to reformat it.  Should probably have just told it not to do so, and then let the rockboxutility get on with doing its thing.  Sounds as if maybe you let windows do what it wanted to do and reformat the ipod, which would have interfered with what rockbox utility was doing.  You might have to start the whole process from the beginning, or maybe you could just copy the rockbox directory onto the ipod manually.

Also,  is this an unmodded 6g or an iflash mod?  Latter could have all sorts of other complications going on.

Can't load Rockbox.iPod:

That simply says that you installed the bootloader but not Rockbox itself, seemingly because installation didn't continue after installing the bootloader. Connect the Ipod to the PC, it should connect as a removable drive. Now install Rockbox to it using Rockbox Utility, but UNCHECK the "Bootloader" button, and make sure to CHECK the "Rockbox" button. Then install and restart the Ipod. It should now be able to start Rockbox.
