Title: Rockbox London Social Meet
Post by: GodEater on June 06, 2007, 01:50:05 PM
Looking around on Rasher's site which shows roughly where in the world people are - I see there are about 30 odd Rockbox users lurking around inside the M25, and most of those are inside the North / South circulars.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a bit of a social meet one night in the week?

It wouldn't be as formal as a "Devcon" - I wasn't planning on bringing a laptop (and mine's both broken, and extremely heavy anyway!) - but I guess people could possible use it as a forum for some informal Rockbox discussion, as well as an excuse to have a few light ales :)

Any interest in this? I was thinking about a pub in Holborn, or the western edge of the City (going further west is undesirable from my point of view as most bars tend to fill up with tourists).

As one of those 30 odd Rockbox users lurking within the M25, I'm interested in a social meet.

Holborn/east of Holborn seems a good idea for a location - it should be relatively quiet any night apart from Fridays...

If you happen to do it between July 7 and 12, I'll be in London for vacation and would be interested.

Wednesday 11th good for everyone that's interested? (All four of us - careful in the rush!)

Was thinking of finding a drinking establishment in / near Smithfields as actual watering holes in Holborn itself are a little thin on the ground. Nearest tube station to Smithfields is Farringdon.

That would work for me.  We're staying on Aldwych, and it looks like that would be quite close.

If you're THAT close to our venue - can you recommend a pub ? (Must serve Guinness or linuxstb is going to shoot me).

I'm up for this as well, long time user though this is one of my first posts here. I work at White City but know the Holborn area fairly well if people are stuck for ideas on where to go.

So long as we don't end up in the Griffin I think it'll be cool (Febs is bringing his wife - wouldn't be a good choice unless she's very liberally minded!)

Post by: GodEater on July 10, 2007, 03:15:38 AM
Okay - I've failed spectacularly to do any sort of visit to Holborn to find a decent a pub to start in - so I suggest we just go to Feb's hotel and go from there.
Title: Re: Rockbox London Social Meet
Post by: Febs on July 10, 2007, 04:20:10 AM
Works for me.  Let me know what time you want to meet.

There are plenty of pubs in the immediate vicinity of my hotel, though they definitely seem to cater to the tourist crowd, which I think linuxstb wanted to avoid.

Me too - so we'll wander east from your hotel to find somewhere a bit less popular with the tourists.

Sounds good.  There's a place called "The George" on Strand which looks promising, though I haven't yet been inside.

What time should we meet?

The plan is for someone to have it written on a piece of paper on the table.

Otherwise just walk in and scream "Rockbox" at the top of your voice, and we'll spot you ;)

Post by: GodEater on July 12, 2007, 02:55:45 AM
linuxstb and I are definitely keen for a rematch. He managed to out drink everyone else last night, and still sound coherent and intelligent. This could well have been because I was thoroughly plastered and conversations about pink elephants and bubblegum would have sounded intelligent to me - but lets not go there :)

So for anyone interested our agenda for the evening went :

a) beer
b) more beer
c) curry
d) conversations that looped in and out of Rockbox related stuff.

Febs showed off his (imho) far too expensive headphones (Shure e500s I think) which did an excellent job of removing all background noise from the surroundings but (again imho) still aren't worth the price! Caveat again that I'm proud of my tin ears, so don't go mad at me for maligning your favourite headphones if they happen to be in your back pocket too.

Stripwax failed to show up sadly.

Febs good lady wife managed to last a good hour or so before she told us that "riveting though the conversation is, I'm going back to the hotel - later!".

Febs and I have agreed to try to explain cricket / baseball to each other.

Um - there was probably more but I was definitely a bit squiffy when I left and it escapes me now.

You left out:

b2) more beer
b3) more beer
b4) "I'll just have a soft drink this round."  "I got you another beer any way!"

Let's see, what else?

We discovered that one cannot open an iPod 4G with a guitar pick.  Especially after a couple of beers.

We discovered that these forums can be highly entertaining when read aloud from GodEater's mobile phone after a few rounds.  :)

We discovered that the proprietor of a certain Indian restaurant on The Strand is not keen on providing a glass of ice when the can of Coke that he has served is already, in his opinion, cold enough.

All-in-all, it was a great time.  Thanks again to GodEater for putting it together and for linuxstb for making the executive decision on what turned out to be a fine pub.

I can just imagine that. All the n00bish DOOM posts must become much less irritating under the influence  ;)

Nice to see the photo. You always form a vague mental image of people after reading enough posts from them and it's nice to see that image absolutely shredded after seeing what they are really like ;D

/me wonders how likely a North-East Scotland social meet would be...  :-\

Fear not, for if I can make it (and I hope to) then you won't come last in any arm-wrestling.

I think we should concentrate more on a decent Tower this time though.  Anyone got a decent camera phone (or portable camera)?

Also, did we decide on a location yet?

I have a semi reasonable camera which I could bring along - the phone just didn't cut it last time. 3.2 megapixels maybe, but the lense is horrible and Carl Zeiss optics are no doubt fine in proper cameras, but get covered in pocket fluff on a phone just like other lenses do.

I'm still welcome if I'm not technically a user, right? Nothing I've coded is usable. ;D

I have a couple of potential targets (D2, ZVM) for tower building, but I'd need to take a soldering iron to my H100 before I have anything that can actually run Rockbox...

Potential targets are always welcome in towers of Rockbox. It makes them taller (very important) and more interesting (who wants to see a pile of MP3 players we've all seen before?) :D

So yes - please come along!

@linuxstb/pondlife: I can read the IRC logs at work but can't log in, so you get a response here. :-\

I was hoping to show some useful progress on the D2 port, but I've pretty much run out of hacking time (beer elsewhere comes first tonight!). The code doesn't work from flash at present, so even to show it boot to the Rockbox logo and then crash would require someone with a laptop and tcctool - and it has to be said, that runs the risk of getting a bit geeky for a PubCon...

There's a prize (a pint, naturally) if you can identify all the players used to build the towers:

I should be able to get over for the weekend, which means either the 4th or 5th.  I'm not too fussed which, but knowing sooner rather than later would be good as I need to book trains.

Edit:  I'd prefer Friday 4th - it cuts down the total number of trains I have to take.

With any luck it'll be far too warm to consider anything so physical.

In addition, we have no swag to wrestle over :)

Given that there will be at least three of us sleeping over at my place that night (room for more on the floor if you're not fussy), I propose we have a change of venue this time, and go somewhere local to me.

There are at least three pubs on Wapping High Street which all directly overlook the River, two of which I know first hand have beer gardens right on the river. Nearest Tube station is current Tower Hill, with a quick (5 minutes) bus ride from there to get into the heart of Wapping.

Nah, it's not the pubs - you need a ticket to be allowed in GodEater's presence  :D

Yep.  After you've met GodEater, he has to pay you to repeat the experience. :D

With a bit of luck I'll be able to make the 4th too, now. A few beers and a bit of M200-swapping sounds pretty good to me. 8)

Btw. I originally had a mental target of getting the D2 port to a somewhat usable state by the time of DCE. That's obviously not going to happen, but I should be able to demo something a little more impressive than the blank screen it had back in March...

Right then.  So by my count we have: me, GodEater, pondlife, shotofadds, and BigBambi.  Is that all?

All?  That's a record turnout for DevConPub, I think.  If we all make it, of course...

You might want to pester stripwax and linuxstb if they've not already got good excuses.  I'd probably do it myself, but luckily I'm snowed under at work.

GodEater at least had better make it - I'm sleeping on his sofa :)

And if he is there, then I assume scorche will be too, unless he gets lost in the delights of Soho or something  ;)

I think linuxstb is in Cuba on that date - so he can't come.

I've not seen stripwax to pester him, although I might well be able to get hold of him on facebook.

So you're three Londoners and Scorche?

Please tell me your tshirt size as soon as possible, and I'll ship a few with Scorche (as we're both currently in Berlin) to make you able to still have some fun over there even though I won't show up! ;-P

* shotofadds figures 4 t-shirts and 6 attendees makes arm-wrestling time (btw. mine's a medium!)

Can the arm-wrestling rules be extended so that only small armed people wrestle for the small shirts?

I would imagine the small shirts would only fit the small-armed people, so there'd be little point in the big-armed people wrestling for them. Unless they want something to wash the car with or something. Which personally I don't :)

If the Rockbox fund buys me a car for which I would then need something with which to clean it, then I will arm wrestle for a small t-shirt.  Otherwise, I think your small t-shirt is safe from me at least :)

Who's in possession of the Rockbox car currently then ?

And what is it ?

i´d suggest something as compact as a typical rockbox target, so u maybe can get a "matchbox" branded lambourghini perhaps eaven gold colored (not plated!!) ;D

Considering that it's coming from the Swedes, I would imagine it's a Volvo.  Or maybe a Saab.   :)

Now it's time to make a small model of the Rockbox Car with Zagor, Bagder, and LinusN action figures to go with it. ;)

Heh, as a child of the 70s who suffered financial hardship through the mighty arm of the Lucasfilm merchandising department, I'd like to see a range of Rockbox(tm) action figures.

Having also suffered at the hands of Mr. George Lucas and his marketing empire, I'm now imagining some scene in the dim and distant Rockbox past where LinusN tells Bagder, "I am your father". :D

For those still in doubt, we're meeting at "The Captain Kidd" on Wapping High Street. Early starters, such as myself, should be there from around 6:30 onwards.

Considerable sums :)

However, I'd have thought that the risk of being sued for ruining people's eyesight would be a good enough deterrent :)

In that case :

which was unfortunately taken after pondlife had left. The ones which included him were taken by a drunken epileptic it would seem, and are not worth posting sadly :(

Also, just for soap :

Note the beer included in the Tower (as the flying buttresses), which makes this one truly unique so far.

** corrected URL for the tower - thanks shotofadds

To get the full glory of the Tower you might need a capital T in the URL...  ;D

@GodEater: if you have a surplus pizza-stained Rockbox t-shirt lying around it's probably mine.

Now that's not fair, he was certainly drunk, but I don't think he was epileptic, nor did we use any strobe lighting.  I told you we should have got John McEnroe to take the picture....

p.s. Hope you all carried on until the small hours, somehow it took me nearly 3 hours to get home.

Right then!

Once more, I will be "in town", so I thought we might see about getting another one of these together.  I will be in London from the 24th till the 30th, so we should likely meet sometime around then.  ;)  Perhaps GodEater or someone else could suggest a specific date/place that will work?

As far as attendance goes, please post if you might be willing/able to attend!

Darn - I'm going to be standing/sitting/lying in a muddy field from June 24th until June 29th.  Will probably want an early night on the 30th too, even if scorche hasn't flown off by that evening.

I really must extend the timestretch patch to real life.

I think since it became something of a tradition, we should revisit The Coal Hole on The Strand.

7 o'clock onwards okay? (Tonight!)
