Title: 80 gig ipod freezes at random.
Post by: mrmagic526 on May 31, 2007, 11:45:57 AM
It's not all the time and but it'll keep playing music but you cannot adjust volume and it won't respond to key presses.  The only thing you can do is a forced reset.  Several have mentioned this problem in a custom build forum but we all tried it with the standard build and have the same result.  With and without custom wps's.    I tried with a fresh install.  It's not all that frequent but it'll happen mostly if you are doing multiple things at a time.  Updating the database while playing for example.

By the way thanks for the great work in getting this to function on the 80gig.  I love rockbox and have been dieing for the day it would work on my 80 gig.  Thanks for your efforts.

Same problem here, it gets between 1-2 tracks before freezing on screen, no buttons work, however the music carries on, and the backlight still functions as normal. I wondered if it was because I was using my Apple firmware database as apposed to the one rockbox builds, but I just tried opening songs from iPod_Control and it got as far as track 3 before crashing this time. Each time I've started it off and not used it, so it's not multi-tasking that's doing it.
I'm hoping it's me being as thick as something thick, and have missed something obvious, if so, apologies!

Other than this issue, I'm loving rockbox again! Cheers for the patch devs

Edit - oddly, I installed some themes, and the font pack, (using "minty blue" now) and since then, no crashes. Try putting on the font pack?  ???

Happened to me once - touching the scrollwheel turns on backlight but none of the buttons work. I just waited for the backlight to turn off and then tried again and it worked. The build I am using is not a recent one - a week and a half old i think.

I have the exact same problem with my 80GB. It is a more frequent problem than you describe. I don't think it has anything to do with the iPod database (which I'm not using) or the font pack (which I am using). The only way to recover once this happens is to hold down Menu-Select until it restarts.

yup it's not all that often but I haven't found any common thing that would cause it.   Sometimes it's just playing music and it's stuck as described...

Can I ask what this thread has to do with installation issues ?

@GodEater: So, if it's something else like User Interface and Voice, can a moderator move it to the right forum?
I didn't start the thread, but it's an important issue affecting a lot of 80GB iPod users, so it'd be nice if somebody in know did look at it.

That said, certain mysterious circumstances do lessen the likelihood of freezing (I was finding it happened more with certain WPSes over others for some reason). So, no worries.
Thanks!

I'd just like to say that I've had this on my 60GB, using r13357-070508 (it has also happened on older builds). It's very rare. I'll try the latest build and post back if it happens again.

Same happens here, if I listen up to 3 songs it freezes, i'm using EvilG build... And there's nothing related to using album art, because i'm not using.

Problems related to EvilG build should only be talked about in his thread. I've certainly had the problems using his build, but I think it's clear they happen regardless of it.
We'll have to wait and see, I think - repeated utterances to the tune of "Yeah, it happens to me too" are pretty useless for the developers! I think the salient facts are:

That's it. Nobody knows what causes it - it seems fairly random. As with some other users, I had it happen a whole lot a few days ago, but now (under basically same conditions), I've been completely clear for some time!

It is also very important to know if this is a 5.5G issue or not, and if it only affects the 80GB models.

I frequently have the keys not responding on a 5G 30GB while listening to music but it fixes itself after the backlight has switched off and on again. I don't know if it's related.

80GB, so 5.5G - I'm using a build from today - svn rev is 13583.

I update a couple of times a week usually. Sometimes once a day.

Mine has been freezing on SVN builds and the EvilG build, so I think we can toss that out.

However I would urge people to try something when they notice the freeze:
Press menu once and wait, mine seems to take a minute or so, but it usually recovers.

I was resetting at first, but upon seeing the freeze, pushing menu, then deciding that I'd rather finish listening to my album than reset, I noticed it eventually recovered.

Post by: peteypiefrogworth on June 09, 2007, 02:33:27 AM
I just discovered something, for what it's worth... When it started happening, I disabled various processing things like Crossfeed and ReplayGain, and sometime not long after (presumably after a reboot), it basically stopped happening.

Today I was listening to an older album and thought "Hey, I should put ReplayGain back on!"
I did so, and literally almost immediately I got the freezing problem. Twice.

I've disabled it again and rebooted, and it seems ok so far, although who knows.

So... ReplayGain? Or could it just be some kind of load threshold? IANAP, so this is just an observation...

but ReplayGain already disabled at my rockbox, and its freeze still :*(

Oops, got the freezing today, and ReplayGain is certainly off.

@GodEater: not a very recent build - have there been some relevant updates? Thanks.
Title: Re: 80 gig ipod freezes at random.
Post by: GodEater on June 12, 2007, 03:20:33 AM
Given we don't know what's causing the problem - how could I know if there's been a relevant update?

We only ask when people are reporting a problem that they keep their build up to date so that when / if a developer has a clue about it, he knows the people with the issue are on up-to-date code.

Had the same problem today, 5.5g 80 GB iPod, using Rockbox r13631-070615. Interface freeze 2 minutes into a song, playback continued. Had to reboot, did not solve itself.

Can we get an indication from those that have reported this as to whether you use the database or not ?
Title: Re: 80 gig ipod freezes at random.
Post by: woodparis on June 19, 2007, 06:11:21 PM
I use the database and I have the exact same problem, it freeze and I have to wait that my battery gets empty...

And By the way, the scrooling is damn slow...otherwise thank you guys !!!

I may have a battery problem when it comes to charging it to report but let me try again to be sure about what I am going to report.

Once again thank you for this great job !

Let's be clear on this - no-one has to wait for the battery to drain. Just perform Apple's hard reset and boot back into Rockbox again.

How can you switch to the Apple OS if you were never using the database ?

Did you have two copies of your music on the iPod ?

I had the freezing problem once with my iPod 5.5G 80GB. It was freezing during playback of an ogg file. The only unusal thing I recognized was that the ogg file was over 10 minutes in length which is unusual for my music (and yes, I use the database).

But I had "freezing" my iPod already several times not during playback but during it was turned off. That means when I tried to turn it on it did not react (except on pressing Menu und Select to reboot). Sometimes when trying to turn on I guess I saw a battery symbol (or a similar icon) centered in the middle of the screen only for a split second (but without the display light turned on) and then the iPod was dead and I had to reboot. Since the display light was not turned on it was hard to recognize and I may have missed it sometimes.

I don't know if this is related to the originally reported freezing problem but the shown (battery) symbol may give an indication in the direction of the bug.

I also get the issue that dip described. I don't think it's related though, because I almost always get that issue, but I still haven't had the original issue (the one this thread is relating to) for a long time.  I was using the database for a short time a long time ago. I can't remember if the freezing was happening when I was using the database. I'll start using the database and see if it happens again.

As a reminder, I have a 60GB 5G iPod.

For reference below, message 1:
Quote
Searching... 0 found ()
and message 2:
Quote
Searching... 0 found (PLAY/PAUSE to abort)

Build r13609-070610:

Navigating in the database gives message 1, then 2, before showing the "folder".
Sometimes when navigating, message 2 says "8 found" instead of "0 found". (tried in numerous "folders" with different amounts of songs/artists/etc, with only either 0 or 8 found)

Choosing "Database" from the main menu or returning to the database from the "now playing" (don't know the official name, the screen with the progress bar) screen shows 1-2-1-2, before showing the database.

Choosing "Database" from the main menu when the database is not initialised:
Quote
Database is not ready
Initialize now

SELECT = YES
Any other = NO
Select successfully builds the database. Any other button press returns to the main menu. Scrolling causes the freeze mentioned in this thread.

It hasn't frozen during playback so far (using database).

Build r13764-070702 (only used for a couple minutes):

Same as above, but navigating in database seems to only give each message once, instead of twice each. Sometimes only message 1 appears to be shown, but it could be that its just flashing too fast for me to see it. Sometimes messages 1-2-1 are shown, but this could again be because its flashing too fast.

EDIT:

Ooh! I just got halted playback and:
Quote
Undefined instruction
at 16ABE4FA
(Not in the style of the normal messages, it's tiny white text on top of the last thing shown on the screen)

I got a similar message once before on a different build, but at C0EDBABE. Not sure if it was the same "Undefined instruction".

... And while writing that...
Quote
Data abort
at 000371F0

I have a hunch this is unrelated, so sorry in advance for flooding the thread with unrelated information.

...and
Quote
Undefined instruction
at 00037D84

EDIT 2: the messages in that edit came during playback.

EDIT 3: "Data abort at 00000002". I think we get the idea that this is going to keep happening, but I thought maybe the memory addresses might mean something to you.

It's hard to find a solution to something which hasn't happened to any of the developers. We don't know what causes it because it doesn't happen to us.

Best place for a bug report is Flyspray.

But first, ensure you're running the latest, unpatched build (including bootloader) and have reset to all default settings.

Then see if you can find a recipe that causes the freeze (e.g. playing a particular track, or skipping tracks quickly, or maybe a particular plugin).

(If it all seems stable with default settings, switch back to your preferred settings/WPS/theme etc and see if that makes a difference.)

what is flyspray?

im runing latest build everything on default (bootlader was not updated for a long time, right? )

will try to find a recipe for a 100% freeze :) what should i do then?
