Title: SYSTEM ERROR 40 (00000040) - can't boot
Post by: santiber on January 22, 2010, 02:36:49 PM
I've been using Rockbox just fine for some years, and now, my Gigabeat stops at loading and displays a red/white box with the message "SYSTEM ERROR 00000040"

I've tried to solve it reinstalling Rockbox and the included bootloader. Nothing improved.
I've also installed Gigabeat's original firmware v3.0. Nothing improved.

I've searched everywhere for a solution, and nothing.

I can connect the USB cable to my notebook and have access to the HDD just fine.

Later today I'll make an entire backup and format the Gigabeat's HDD using Toshiba's tool included with Gigabeat Room.

Hope someone can help me out.  ;)

I don't own a Gigabeat myself, but I did try to find some information as to what that system error code means... Didn't find anything though...

I would try reformatting it (as you're already planning) and see if that helps, that would almost appear to be your only remaining option...

OK, I've just backed up everything on my Gigabeat, and then formatted the HDD using Toshiba's formatting tool.

Then I unplugged the USB cable, and turned off the Gigabeat. BIG MISTAKE!
It started booting, and hanged. Nothing further than the official "loading" screen. No USB support.
So, I went for my screwdriver and opened it following the steps in http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/GigabeatFXPort#Gigabeat_Recovery_Procedures and in http://www.angelfire.com/bug2/gigabeat/

So I got USB support. Then I installed Rockbox using the "installation tool" and then it begun working fine. Now I have all the data back, and Rockbox working smoothly.

Thanks to this forum I've brought my Gigabeat back to life.

I hope this can help anyone in similar situation.
