Title: iRiver iHP-1X0 mSATA SSD drive mod
Post by: bpfiguer on February 02, 2013, 04:20:42 PM
Has anyone tried an mSATA SSD drive using a ZIF to mSATA adapter and rockbox in an iRiver iHP-1X0 player?

I am asking because the price of a 256GB mSATA SSD drive is 1/5 of a 256GB ZIF SSD drive.

All I know is that rockbox does not work on an iPod Video with a mSATA SSD drive and a ZIF to mSATA adapter, but the OF does. So there might be a problem with rockbox and that drive mod, but I am not sure if that applies for the iRivers too. But rockbox developer torne is investigating this problem on a modded iPod Video right now and I am absolutely sure, that he is capable of solving this problem.

By the way: Are mSATA drives really that cheap compared to ZIF SSDs? Can you point me to some examples? I live in Europe and for 256GB SSDs the price of mSATA is about 3/4 the price of ZIF SATA drives.

SuperTalent 256GB ZIF SSD: $1.127 (last year the price was $500)

Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD3 256GB mSATA: $199

Interesting. I get

Super Talent DuraDrive ZT2 256GB, 1.8", ZIF : €254 (~US$345)

Crucial m4 SSD 256GB, mSATA 6Gb/s (CT256M4SSD3): €180 (~US$250)

Adding the price for an adapter (don't know which one exactly) makes the difference even smaller.

Shouldn't be the right interface 50 pin CF? At  least that is what I use in H120.  It does not-seem to be more expensive than eSata or ZIF.

The Super Talent ZIF SSD drives are overpriced 3-folds in the US (e.g. eBay and Amazon) compared with Europe.

The mSATA drives should be faster than ZIF drives unless the iRiver´s controller and/or the mSATA to ZIF adapter are limiting factors.

The 50 pin CF adapter does not work with ZIF or mSATA drives. The 256GB CF cards are difficult to find http://www.lexar.com/about/newsroom/press-releases/lexar-introduces-industry-first-256gb-compactflash-card (http://www.lexar.com/about/newsroom/press-releases/lexar-introduces-industry-first-256gb-compactflash-card). If you are ok with 128GB then the CF mod is a very good option. If you need 256GB or more then SSD could be a better option considering the cost.

For a ZIF SSD drive you use an IDE to ZIF adapter.

For a mSATA drive you use two adapters: an IDE to ZIF and ZIF to mSATA.

Shouldn't be the right interface 50 pin CF? At  least that is what I use in H120.  It does not-seem to be more expensive than eSata or ZIF.

OK, I meant that easiest solution is to buy 50 pin IDE - SSD.  (Edit PATA (IDE 50-pin / CF50) SSD.)
http://www.mx-technology.com/en/product/ssd2.php?sid=5#fragment-16 (http://www.mx-technology.com/en/product/ssd2.php?sid=5#fragment-16)

No adapter is needed. I have installed 120G in iRiver H-120.

Newer players don't use 50 pin IDE

I made mistake. I wanted to write PATA.

From, what was written in this forum, it seems that the bootloader of iHP-1x0 (H-1x0) cannot be changed/fixed at present time. There was introduced some kind of bug years ago which bricks the player. The current state of bootloader is that it is unmaitenancable. :(

So, nobody can count on that if mSATA SSD disk will not work that someone will be able to fix the bootloader.

If you use 50 pin PATA (CF) SSD, you do not need any adapter.

This 120 GB works for sure (I have it and another user as well). They make also 240 GB, so most probably it will work as well.

I'll repost from another forum:
and success! rockbox reads it.  Did a battery swap to a 2200 mAh one as well.  That little battery plug is a pain in the ass to get in there.
So apparently my boot loader (version 6?) recognized the drive.  All i did for good measure was to connect the usb, format the drive as ntsb so windows would assign a drive letter, then i used guiformat to format it to fat32 (with 32k cluster sizes).  Copied my backup of the old 40 gig drive back to it and started it up.  Rockbox loaded up.
I'm fairly sure the original firmware doesn't work (confirmed, says check hdd) but with rockbox and usb working i don't mind.
I got some pics, lemme see how to get them on here.

Thank you for posting!

How fast is now the player compared with the Toshiba hard drive disk or another reference (bootup, shutdown, browsing files, etc.)?

How fast is transferring files to the player through USB?

Did you try WAV or lossless files?

Does gapless work fine?

How is the battery life?

Does the player behave stable or freeze sometimes?

It's pretty hard to compare honestly.  I had an issue where the hdd light would come on and freeze up the player for like 10-15 seconds.  After a day of using it that seems to be gone.  USB transfer speed from my computer seems to go at like 12-14 megs a second without slowing down.  Rockbox seems to boot fairly fast.  I'll take a few videos and you can see yourself.  I was scrolling in rockbox and i didn't see any issues.  Again I'll show it off in a video i guess.  Battery i can't tell.  I can turn it on and time it, but it's a new 2200 mAh one, not the original.  It wouldn't be a really good test.
I did notice that after a day of using it through my computer and using it as a hard drive, i noticed it was a bit warm to the touch.  Not hot or anything, but i didn't notice any heat with the original harddrive in it.

Thank you for the useful information and video. Do you know if the mod can fit inside an iHP-120 player or you need a thicker one as the iHP-140 player?

i didn't measure.  As far as i know, a 5mm drive can fit in a ihp120, 8mm for a ihp140.  I'm fairly sure the msata/adapter combo is smaller than the original 8mm drive.  How much so? I'm not sure.

So on iRivers Rockbox works with mSATA SSDs using adapters???

I wish I had the technical knowledge to understand why that doesn't work on iPods.

Thankfully, you don't have to ;)

It might be news that is somewhat buried in these forums, but, the issue is being actively worked on by Torne. He's quite confident the issue is identifiable, and fixable, the only issue - is time...rather, not having enough of it.

It may not be anything to do with the player; maybe you have a different adapter, also :)

bootloader ver 6
rockbox 3.11.2
at least that's what it says.  I updated it to rockbox when it was first available for the ihp140, updated maybe once or twice since then by replacing the .rockbox directory.  Never fooled around with the bootloader.  Definitely didn't install 7pre4.

I'll attempt to recreate that and fill the drive and post the results.

Ok.  I put on a ton of music.  Free 62.5GB, disk 238GB.  This is version 3.11.2.  No problem starting, able to select music and play.  Checked genre in database, took about 15 seconds but it seems to be working just fine.  USB still works.
I'd say it works.

I performed the same mod as you did. It works with Rockbox. However, when the battery charge (Cameron Sino, 2200 mA) is lower than 4 volts the player freezes when it is booting up (at the stage when the battery charge check point is displaying). Then I get ATA error -11. If I use the full charged battery or AC power everything works fine. I tried with different iHP-140 players and the low battery/booting up problem is still there. It is possible that the mSATA card + SDD use to much battery power?

Could be possible that your mSATA adapter (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mSATA-SSD-to-40-Pin-ZIF-Adapter-Card-as-Toshiba-or-Hitachi-ZIF-HDD-/261099926502?pt=US_Drive_Enclosures_Docks&hash=item3ccac4b3e6&clk_rvr_id=457203716124) it is not identical to mine (http://www.amazon.com/Micro-SATA-Cables-Adapter-Toshiba/dp/B009BA5JU6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354716013&sr=8-1&keywords=msata+zif).

Could you please check your modded player with a partially charged battery (< 3.9 Volts)?

I tried the SSD mSATA mod with the iHP-120 player and unfortunately it can not fit with the thick Cameron Sino 2200 mA battery. I need to test a slim battery.

Thanks

no we have the same msata ssd adapter.  the ebay uk link was for someone who said something along the lines that he was from the uk and wanted options to purchase the components.  I'm from the US and got the adapter through amazon.

To be honest i haven't tried low battery operations.  I mainly use it as a portable harddrive and a backup to my phone (64 gig micro sd + bluetooth phone/headset is great for music, but i like connecting my iriver to my computer at work for music while being able to listen to voicemail, windows sounds, etc).

I'll attempt to recreate your conditions and just leave it connected without power until the battery gets low, then try booting up.

I tried and same error as bpfiguer.
Battery power is 4.12v or 3.9v. No error but Rockbox boot loader v6 stay at battery voltage.

The IRiver firmware boot and say "check hdd connection". My mSATA drive isn't formatted...

--- edit ----

I have found how to format my drive ! ;)
it works fine without battery. I have used RockboxUtility to setup all the things on the drive.

--- edit ----

battery at 3.94v, system does not boot.

You did not write how big SSD is. If it is big you need newer firmware.  And maybe even for most of modern HD or SSD.  You need bootloader 7pre4, the latest working one.

I have SSD H120, but not eSATA. So there might be also another problem with your mod than old bootloader.  Mine Iriver booted only eraticly, once in several cases, with bootloader 6.

I can confirm Crucial M500 240GB mSATA drive (cat. no. CT240M500SSD3)
WORKS on my iRiver H340.
I was making the mistake of trying to format the mSATA drive using a ZIF to USB adaptor I had in the house similar to this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FHI3CTG/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2FJ04XRTBDC3C&coliid=I26BO8ZH06O7K5

That was driving me crazy giving me errors recognizing the drive or freezing while formatting.

It is so much easier. Just use the iRiver (assuming you already had rockbox running on it on your previous drive or maybe that is not even necessary) .
1. Connect the mSATA drive with the mSATA to ZIF adapter.
2. Then use the ZIF to PATA adapter to plug it to the H340.
3. Plug the H340 to the computer USB and turn it on.
4. Format the drive with Windows in NTFS and assign a letter to it.
5. Format the drive to FAT32 [I used 32K cluster size (allocation unit size) not sure which size is recommended] (I used this software: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm ).
6. Use the Rockbox Utility to download and install rockbox.
7. Copy some music files.
8. Disconnect and unplug.
9. Turn on your iRiver H3240 !! :-)
10. Enjoy!

I will return and comment if something doesn't work.

I USED:

Hi.
I followed as much the threads as possible concerning the Iriver H140 mods and I plan to push mine to 240GB.

So far I've ordered the
1 ZIF HDD,SSD to 1.8 inch TOSHIBA type converter,zender
2 MINI PCI-E Msata SSD to 40pin ZIF adapter card as Toshiba or Hitachi ZIF CE HDD
3 Crucial M500 mSATA 240GB SATA3 Internal Solid State Drive (MLC) CT240M500SSD3

My main concern and the mystery part concerns the battery. I read that a lot of people swapping it with the ipod 2200mAh battery. And some are just replacing it by an original one but new.

Based on the set up I'm planning, What would be your recommendation?

If the ipod 2200mAh battery has to be the one, Does the plug really need to be inverted before plug it to the Iriver H140.
And if Ipod 200mAh Battery, will my original charger still be enough?

I did find this but it says I river.... Looks the same as the ipod one....  Confusing.  :)

Confusing.  :)

Thanks in advance
Steph

For the Cameron Sino battery CS-H110XL is not required to invert polarity (just use without modification). If you invert the polarity your player will be fried. The iRiver charger works fine with this battery.

Thank you bpfiguer.
Just ordered it.   :)

Last question around. (at least for the hardware).
For the "Crucial M500 mSATA 240GB SATA3", Do I need to format it in Fat32? Never used that kind of hard drive before....
If yes, can I do it once installed in the Iriver HP140?

The drive needs to be formatted FAT32 to work with Rockbox and probably with the original iRiver firmware too.

I suggest you getting a mSATA/USB enclosure because I don´t know if the original iRiver firmware will reconize the SSD drive (it will allow you to copy music files faster: 5x times). If your SSD drive is factory formatted as FAT32 then you are lucky.

To format the SSD drive to FAT32 you can use this utility (http://download.cnet.com/CompuApps-SwissKnife-V3/3000-2248_4-10070864.html)

Thanks bpfiguer.
I thought that would be the case.  Thanks for the link. I'll study the threads about it. I've seen the name already but was hoping I could avoid it.  :)

For the mSATA/USB enclosure, would something like that work?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-SATA-2-5-HD-Hard-Drive-Disk-Case-Enclosure-Box-for-Laptop-PC-/171383470708?pt=US_Drive_Enclosures_Docks&hash=item27e7403a74 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-SATA-2-5-HD-Hard-Drive-Disk-Case-Enclosure-Box-for-Laptop-PC-/171383470708?pt=US_Drive_Enclosures_Docks&hash=item27e7403a74)

or maybe something more like that:

Would you have any suggestion?

Steph

And note that the iRiver original firmware WILL NOT recognize flash memory.  Hence you must format the flash memory to FAT32 before installing it into the iRiver device.  You also must flash the bootloader to the iRiver original firmware from the hard drive before installing the flash memory.

Best of luck with your project!

>>If you use 50 pin PATA (CF) SSD, you do not need any adapter.

So this drive: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007PFPVOS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

can be installed without any adapter, just slide it on in place of the existing HD?

Thanks in advance,

I just got done upgrading my iHP-120 from a Toshiba MK8025GAL 80 GB drive to the Corsair M500 480 GB mentioned in this post (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,42704.msg227802.html#msg227802).  This is my third drive upgrade on this player.  The first was from the factory 20 GB to a 30 GB to get a little extra space, then from the 30 GB to the 80 GB when the 30 failed (I dropped the player while it was drive seeking).  I was significantly out of space with the 80 GB, hence the current upgrade.

I already had the ZIF to IDE adapter mentioned in this post (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,42704.msg219976.html#msg219976) and the mSATA SSD to ZIF adapter from this eBay seller (http://www.ebay.com/itm/290933759001).  I updated the bootloader to 7pre4 before doing the drive swap, got the player started in USB mode, formatted the drive as NTFS using Windows Drive Management then reformatted the drive at FAT32.  I also installed the newest Rockbox build using Rockbox Utility.

I'm currently copying over ~400 GB of data using FreeFileSync.

I can add the Toshiba  HG6 THNSNJ512GACU 512GB mSATA SSD to the list of compatible cards for the iHP series. I've just put one in my trusty iHP-140 and happily loaded half of it with music files. It does need a relatively full charge to boot up. If the battery voltage is lower than 3.8 V, Rockbox will report an ATA-11 error. Other than that it operates very sweetly. I've configured it for optical out into a seperate DAC/amplifier. I haven't tried this card in my H320 yet but am not anticipating a problem.

Hi Y2kse, Michaelbowe,
did you have success and does the player run smooth?
I am curious because I have 240gb Toshiba HD in my 140 and thought about upgrading to 480. Currently I am using about 200Gb,
With my current 240gb HD I have the problem that if I use the database the device gets very slow. If I just forward to the next title this sometimes takes 30secs. Same if I go back to the files and select another album. This also takes sometimes more than 1 minute until it plays! I have the 7pre4 and the version 3.11. Higher versions cause the player to hang up during boot.
Without having the database built the performance is not great either but ok.  Or maybe my settings are incorrect?
Thanks for answers

The file-transfer I'd mentioned actually failed, so I had to start over with a reformat.  Since then, I've only moved a few GB of data.  I'd noticed a few-second delay on track switching if I hadn't played that particular file, but generally track switches were instantaneous.  I'm on nightly build b681e93-141222.

A follow-up post to my experience with the Corsair M500 480 GB.  I've just experienced my third instance of file system corruption, so I'm going back to the Toshiba MK8025GAL hard drive.

Did anyone tried Crucial M550 or MX200 series mSATA SSDs?
