Title: howto prepare rockbox bootloader for iriver using a mac ibook?
Post by: niklas on August 30, 2006, 07:32:21 PM
Hi folks,

I am a very happy rockbox-user for many months now.
Now while on vacation, I show my rockboxed iriver h120 to a friend I visit who owns a h140. He wants me to help him put rockbox on his iriver too. The problem is - he has only a mac ibook which I am not very experienced with (neither is he :-) - and the patcher-software seems only to be available for windows...

So my question is: how can I patch a firmware with the iriver-rockbox-bootloader using a mac ibook?
(Or alternatively: is there a friendly pal amongst you who could send me one already bootloader-patched firmware for an iriver h140 to my email?)

Thanks a lot for any help,
Niklas

I'll be sending you some mail soon...

One thing you need to be able to do to work with rockbox to any extent with a mac is learn how to show hidden files and folders, as the basic rockbox folder is by default a hidden folder on a mac. There are a number of ways of doing this. You can use onyx, which is a free dl from apple. Or you can use terminal, copying and pasting

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES

into it, pressing enter, and relaunching finder. When you are done with the hidden folders, you do the copy and paste thing again, substituting NO for the YES, and relaunching finder again.

Another good idea is to go to the misticriver.net site, and peruse the rockbox for the ihp1X0 forums. Lots of good advice there.

As long as there is no Patcher software made for Mac there is no way.

Could there be a patcher made for Unix that is possible to use in the Terminal on a Mac?

Way! Sure, it's a bit of a pain to do the patching on a mac, but there are ways. But you don't need to patch it on a mac - it can be patched on any machine, and installed with a mac. There's a version of iriver version 1.66 patched with the verson 6 bootloader floating around - I got it from an ftp site that's pointed to on the misticriver.net forums. I sent it to the OP, and if anyone else needs it, well, you know what to do.
