Title: 80gb 5.5g Ipod Video Users..
Post by: bobdavis123 on May 24, 2007, 08:59:39 PM
Should be aware that by the looks of it (and mine has not crashed yet) that we're now functionally supported.  Not officially of course - as testing has to be done.

There are a few hoops to jump through to get it all going but it is most definitely worth it.

Many thanks to amiconn for providing the crucial adjustments

One thing to remember is to make sure you get the SVN version rather than the daily build as the bootloader code is not included with the daily build and you most definitely have to build your own bootloader.  I ah, learned this the hard way.  :)

You don't have to build your own bootloader - the current official version of ipodpatcher (v1.0 with v1.1 bootloaders) includes 80GB 5.5g support.

80GB 5.5g users just need to do exactly the same as all other ipod users - follow the install instructions in the manual.

I think that is inaccurate information.

Here is a working implementation for those eager to test. You need to build and install both rockbox and a custom bootloader with this patch applied.

And that comment is from 4 days ago, while the person who posted in this thread is the person who tends to be the maintainer of iPodPatcher and would be the person most likely to know its status at any given time.

Has ipodpatcher changed in the last few days?  I used it with no success on tuesday.

I had an (ata) patched version of rockbox installed and it wouldn't go any further than the logo.  It wasn't until I built my own bootloader from the svn that it worked.

And by worked I mean I had not changed anything on the the drive, the existing patched rockbox was still there but replacing the bootloader and doing a manual ipodpatch did the trick?

Yes.

Hence the reason everywhere on the website now says that the 80GB works with Rockbox.  That has to include ipodpatcher, otherwise users couldn't install it...

Ok thanks for letting me know that

Things change quite swiftly around here don't they..  :)

I'd have never have thought that official support would have come through so quickly.

I wouldnt doubt what Llorean says. He is with this project for a very long time. Some people think he is a coder for rockbox he is so knowledgeable.

Where do I find the new ipodpatcher? The link from the manual only points to version 0.9 which does not work with the iPod 80GB.

Try redownloading it. That one there was replaced with the proper version on the 23 of May, but you may have some sort of caching issue.

Wow -- that's TERRIFIC news!  A big thanks to everyone involved for putting in the extra time in getting this to work.

Thank,

It still amazes me that even though this went on to the front page of the rockbox site two days ago - people don't appear to notice it, and need a forum post to read before they become aware of the change  :-\

I can't speak for anybody else, but in my case the reason for this is because my bookmark links directly to the forum page, and I often use the email notification links, which take me to a specific forum, once again bypassing the main site.  I do check the main page once in a while, but I definitely see the forum threads a LOT more regularly.

I always fully check the first page before I go to the forums.

good to see another added target.  i know the 80gb has longer battery life than the other ipods, so i wonder what is its battery life running rockbox?  anyone have results yet?

Reading between the lines of Apple's claimed runtimes, I would dare to say that the 80GB will have the same runtime as the 60GB.
With generation 5.5 Apple's claimed runtime only increased for movies, not audio, implying not a battery improvement, or a general hardware improvement, but a backlight or Broadcom gain.
If the backlight is less power-hungry than before, this would probably help mpegplayer runtimes, though.  Otherwise it's likely a wash for Rockbox.
