Hello, I've been trying to install Rockbox using Mac Catalina OS, and have not been successful. I'll add that I'm also not tech savvy.
I first tried using the auto install to install Rockbox Utility, but when I attempt to run it, I get an error that the software needs updated. I was able to download <bootloader-ipod6g.ipod > and using the link bluebrother posted about Catalina and 64bit (https://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,53340.0.html), I downloaded <RockboxUtility-v1.4.1-86_64Applmage>, but I'm not sure what to do with these files, and what the next steps are...
When I try to run either one of these files I get the msg "There is no application set to open the document". Assuming I need to follow the documentation for "manual installation" (covering OS X not Catalina), I think my issue is with bootloader(?). Following the documentation, the link in step#2 takes me to a "404 files not found". and when I've tried the terminal command <mks5lboot–dfuscan>, "command not found" returns. I did install libusb using Macports (step 3).
I'm guessing that I've not installed bootloader correctly/completely(?)
Any help would be appreciated.

You don't need the AppImage file, that's for Linux. You need the dmg.
Also, what player are you talking about?

Out of curiosity, bluebrother, but isn't the dmg still a 32-bit macOS app or is it a universal binary? I ask since macOS Catalina has ditched all 32-bit support.

My player is an iPod classic 160g

"The" dmg as in the latest official release binary of Rockbox Utility (which is 1.4.0) is a fat binary, containing PPC and Intel, but no 64bit, and targets macOS 10.4+ so it should still run on those old versions (never tried though). The latest release 1.4.1 doesn't have a macOS binary since that version was broken on macOS.
"The" dmg as in the one linked from the post keithwaddell referenced is x86_64, aka 64bit but no PPC or 32bit anymore, and targets 10.9 (IIRC).

So I’ve downloaded the msg <ipodcatcher-90bbsaee0.msg>, Following the pdf for manual install, Starting mks5lboot, I get the error “no such file or directory”

Is there a reason you're trying manual install? Get the dmg for Rockbox Utility, not ipodpatcher. It should "just" work.

(I don't have an ipod6g, so can't speak from experience here)
Btw, ipodpatcher is for the Ipods up to 5.5g, so not suitable for yours.
