Title: Add menu option to turn iPod off?
Post by: Z_God on August 17, 2006, 07:34:11 PM
Hi,
I just installed a new build on my iPod mini (2nd gen), and now I seem to have some trouble turning off my iPod using the normal keycombo.
I was thinking it might be a lot easier to have an option in the menu to turn it off. Would it be possible to add this? What do others think of this?
Thanks in advance for your response.

There is no combo to turn it off... you just hold Play/Pause in the filetree or WPS and it'll turn off.

What is the normal keycombo? If you aren't using a daily build, but a build with the scrollwheel_positioning patch, you need to use the keycombo "Center + Play/Pause" instead of just "Play/Pause"

If he was using an unofficial build, he should NOT be starting a new thread.

He shouldn't, but you never know. It might also be his own build. I don't think this is really an error report about his specific build though, I think he was just suggesting a TurnOff option in the menu. Sounds like something a patch could be written for maybe?

Well, I'd like to know if he's actually pressing the right button to turn the power off. Feature requests don't really belong in the forums anyway, that's what the Feature Requests page is for.

So, because of this, I'm simply trying to resolve his actual problem (having issues turning it off) and ignoring the feature request aspect of it.

Oops you guys are right. I was pressing the wrong stuff. Sorry for the bothering. Also didn't realise there was a feature request page. Sorry for that too.

Still I'm interested in having a menu option for this. Before I also make a stupid feature request: Would it be feasible to add this? Also an option to reboot into diskmode might be handy if it's disabled and maybe an option to reboot into the Apple firmware? I don't know if this is technically possible, which is why I'm asking.

I'm using an official build btw. Thanks for your responses.

I think rebooting in DiskMode should be possible, since that also happens when you plug in your USB cord. I don't think it would be possible to make the iPod boot in AppleOS though, but I could be wrong here. It would probably be possible with the combination of another bootloader then the ROCKboot.

Actually, it's possible to have all three of those menu options.
Shutdown, Reboot into Apple, and Reboot into Disk mode.

Somebody I know actually has modified his personal build to have them anyway. ;)

Hmm sounds great. Is there any specific reason this patch isn't in the general Rockbox release?
Would this be appropriate for a feature request?
I tried creating an account there too btw but I never got a confirmation.

I suppose pressing reset in the Apple firmware would boot back to Rockbox?

Don't know for sure if this will work for me though, because I've never used my iPod with anything other then Rockbox. I did try the Apple firmware combo some time, but couldn't get it to work and gave up, so I don't know if it's even on there. The most important thing for myself would be the shutdown option :)

@Z: doing the Menu-Select in AppleOS would indeed reboot the iPod, therefore allowing ROCKbox to take over.

And while the ROCKboot is booting, hold Menu. You have to start pressing Menu the second that the backlight of your iPod goes on, and not let go of it untill it says "Loading original firmware...". You could also get Loader2 from the iPodLinux project, which will just give you the option to choose like for example Grub.

i have a great idea for the layout of the menu that could be added in event that does happen

Power Controls (or some other title like Turn off iPod)
-Shut Down
-Reboot into AppleOS
-Reboot into Disk Mode
