Title: Can't load rockbox.ipod: File not found
Post by: turkeyphant on December 26, 2018, 10:54:13 AM
Code: [Select]
Rockbox boot loader
Version: 1.0
Battery status ok
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found

Rockbox being working fine for several months using iQuad adaptor.

Suddenly just froze while playing from my desk so did hardware reboot and got the error above. I can reboot into OF and see the full capacity of the SD cards. But the only topics I can find about this error refer to not installing Rockbox properly whereas I did this successfully a long time ago.

Any ideas?

Those adapters tend to cause disk corruption, so try checking the disk for errors and then copying a new build over. Probably your file system got hosed.

In the future, try not to write to the disk in rockbox.

I have only written to the disk in OF. And I haven't touched the filesystem at all for months.

How do I "copy a new build over"? You mean not using the app?

(And are there any adaptors that work correctly?)

You can use the installer or just copy a downloaded build manually.

I don't know if there are any sd adapters that work reliably, certainly there are none with driver support committed.

Ah how annoying. I'm now on the road for 3 months away from my music collection. What's the best way to recover from this corruption? Simple reformat and install then Rockbox? Do I need to recover OF first?

Or can I simply delete the files and copy back over?

Weirdly i just connected the iPod to the computer and all the music files I've tried work perfectly. But nothing at all will play through Rockbox. Has anyone experienced this? I'd much rather not lose all the music on there if it's recoverable...

The best way to recover is to check the disk for errors and then copy a new build over. Try that first.

I've done that. Tried CHKDSK but got "Cannot read boot sector" after a long time. Then tried with Mac Disk Utility but still the same issue.

As I said, all plays fine on the computer but nothing plays on Rockbox.

Ideally you'd reformat the disk, but if you don't want to you can try just copying a new build over to see if that works.  You'll likely find that some files at least are corrupted, although maybe not any you are likely to notice.

As I said (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,52621.msg243354.html#msg243354) I copied over the new build and it boots fine.

The issue is that the files are not corrupt at all if I play through a computer but they are corrupt if I play through Rockbox. That's my issue and the thing I can't explain.

I suggest to restore with iTunes and reinstall Rockbox. Might be the most radical method, but then you can be sure to have a working filesystem. I don't think that the problems with playback are produced by Rockbox.

Does an iTunes restore also format the filesystem?

As I said (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,52621.msg243354.html#msg243354) I copied over the new build and it boots fine.

The issue is that the files are not corrupt at all if I play through a computer but they are corrupt if I play through Rockbox. That's my issue and the thing I can't explain.

What do you mean by 'playing the files through a computer'?  That's an ambiguous description.

Do you mean you have copies of the same track on your computer (so not literally the same files, but what _should_ be identical copes of them), or do you mean connecting the ipod to the computer by USB and then playing the files from the ipod as an external disk with player software on the computer?

If you mean the former then the obvious conclusion is the files on the ipod are corrupt, the versions on the computer are not.  If the latter, then that's something else (and something odder).

Does an iTunes restore also format the filesystem?

Yes. It puts the storage into the correct state to work with the original firmware and Rockbox as well. It's a factory default, so your data is lost.

I tried CHKDSK several times before but got "Cannot read boot sector" after a long time. Then tried with Mac Disk Utility but still the same issue.

I just connected the iPod, deleted the rockbox directory and did another checkdisk on Mac and it completed correctly. Then installed Rockbox again and all my files are back :)

hey, i have a 160GB ipod classic that has had rockbox on it for several years, and right up until last night it was working fine, then turned it on this morning and the screen said this:

Rockbox boot loader
Version: b99e921-160707
Battery status ok: 3999 mV
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found
Entering USB mode...
Plug USB cable

then when i plug it in it says Bootloader USB mode... and nothing happens

ive tried the hold on/off + menu/select and keep getting the same message

can someone please help?

Dunno.  Failed hard-drive could do that.  Or a broken cable connecting the drive.  Or the cable having disconnected from the drive.  Did it take a knock or was dropped?  Could be the drive content is corrupted, but that is often a sign of a failing hard drive anyway.

Is it a dual-boot rockbox installation?  If so, does it boot in original firmware?

Obvious thing is to try and restore it with iTunes.  I assume you don't have any unique unbacked-up content on it?

When plugged in to PC does the device manager see it?

Generally when I've seen that message it meant the cable had disconnected itself from the iFlash connector (ipod is flash modded).  I would have thought that unlikely with a hard drive.  Drive failure seems more likely.

I would try to put it into DFU mode, and then restore from scratch (ideally using iTunes, but there are ways to do it without iTunes as well).  See: https://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/Restore_iPod_without_iTunes#Putting_the_iPod_into_DFU_mode

thank you so much, and incredibly generous with your time to respond so quickly

just thinking back this to this morning, when i plugged it into the computer, it didnt come up as it usually would, so i unplugged it and changed USB ports and the screen when glitchy, as in the usual screen went blurry so i did the usual reboot holding down both buttons and then this all happened......

so still just restart from scratch? its all backed up audio files anyway...... 99% sure
