Title: Question: How many Rockboxers are from New York or the Tri-State Area?
Post by: LambdaCalculus on June 22, 2007, 12:10:00 PM
Hey everybody! I've noticed on Rasher's Rockboxers world map (http://rasher.dk/rockbox/people/) that there's a huge concetration of Rockboxers located in or near New York City.

So how many forum members are from the area? I'm located in Hoboken, New Jersey myself, but I'm in New York nearly every day (I work here, of course  :)).

I'm thinking about maybe starting a Rockbox Social for the New York area. We can meet maybe once a week or something, and gather to discuss Rockbox and maybe pitch ideas back and forth. So who's up for it?

I can get my girlfriend (iriver H320) and two buddies of mine (iriver H320 and iriver H120) to come along as well.

Just as a note (as  I am involved in a few user groups), meeting once a week is very often.  Typically meetings are done every few months, once a month, or the rare twice a month.

Once a month does sound more reasonable.

I live in Westchester, and I'll have my license soon enough. About a year from now, I'd have my license, but I could always take the train in  :)

True; there's a MetroNorth line in that area, isn't there?

I'm local, thus the nickname.

I've owned the following players (all rockboxed) at one time or another.
H120 (RTCMod), H140, H320, Ipod3G, Ipod4G (grayscale), Toshiba F20.
I now only have the H120(RTC) and the Toshiba F20.

If there was a short agenda for the meeting I'd be willing to geek out for an hour in the evening. Why not?  It'd be fun. Someplace downtown maybe...

I'm usually hanging out on Wednesdays downtown, usually near St. Mark's Place or anywhere below 14th Street. Amongst my friends, I'm considered the go-to guy for anything Rockbox related, since I took the time to grok it as much as I could.

Davide-NYC, if you want to discuss this a little further, PM me or e-mail me; my address is in my profile. I'm going to ask my two friends/fellow Rockboxers about maybe doing something once a month or so, maybe for about an hour or two in an evening. Any other New York-based Rockboxers interested?

Since there haven't been any updates for a while, I might as well announce that I already have two interested members for a Rockbox NYC Social.

While we're deciding on a location, one we have in mind is Starbucks on 3rd Avenue and St. Marks Place. There's a nice corner area we can all sit in, and if there's anyone interested in a pint or two, there's a couple of good bars about a block or two away.

I propose we meet on the third Wednesday of every month, holidays pending. If there's a change, I'll let the members know.

Bring your Rockboxed DAP(s), a laptop if you please, and some cash, of course. Can't have coffee or beer without cash!  ;)

If anyone else is interested, PM or e-mail me for more details!

(EDIT: Forgot that August 15th falls on the third Wednesday of the month, and I won't be available then.)

I'm on Long Island at the moment.  I have an old iRiver H120 that I adore.  Recently I matched it up with a custom-made portable version of the Monica 2 DAC, a Ray Samuels Tomahawk headphone amp, and some Future Sonics Atrio m5's that I use with it.  The sound is wonderful, though the whole setup is pretty fiddly, especially given how minor a sound improvement it provides over my Cowon A2 with the Atrio.  Granted, Rockbox is much better than the A2's software, but still.

Unfortunately, I'm planning on moving to North Carolina soon (assuming I can line up more stable work than a potentially unstable consulting gig with a friend), and weekends are taken up by preparing for the move/looking for houses, so it's unlikely that I'd be available for a meet.  A shame, too, as I'd love to show off my Monica.  heh.

I think it's a little late for this, but if anyone wants to meet some Rockboxers tonight in New York, head to Starbucks on Bowery and Astor Place, across the street from Cooper Union Square. It's a small Starbucks with an outdoor seating area.

Just head inside and shout "Rockbox!" if you're looking for me. We can all sit and have some coffee or something and enjoy ourselves.

I want to see what markun says, then we'll make arrangements from there. If you want to join us, you're more than welcome to, fellow Rockboxer!

If it's cool with Llorean, Febs, and the mods, I want to start a new thread entitled "The Madcap Adventures of markun"... *in announcer voice "In tonight's episode, we join our hero, markun, as he finds himself in New York City. Okay, to all Tri-State area Rockboxers: markun's coming in tomorrow morning. I'm going to speak to him about maybe getting a Rockbox Meetup for this Thursday, October 11th. If you're interested, reply on this thread.

I hope to have the details laid out right away, but just give me a "yay" or a "nay" if you can make it. Bring your Rockboxed DAP, some cash (for beers :)), and (if you want) a laptop.

Yay for me this Thursday. I can bring along: a laptop (will have to re-d/l the dev environment - although my coding prowess is pretty much limited to compiling from source when slowly copying the instructions step-by-step from the Wiki) my H140, H360 and all-new F40 for the "tower of power".

Well, after meeting with markun today and introducing him to a few New York Rockboxers, we showed him around a little bit, accompanied him to where he's staying, went for a bite to eat, and discussed many things Rockbox and non-Rockbox.

We also settled on a location for... THE ROCKBOX NEW YORK MEETUP.

We will be at a bar on Lafayette Street called Puck Fair. It's fairly large and should have enough space for a few Rockboxers to gather. A location on Google Maps is here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=298+Lafayette+Street,+New+York,+NY&sll=40.73717,-74.03101&sspn=0.058661,0.11673&ie=UTF8&ll=40.72547,-73.995709&spn=0.007334,0.014591&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1) for those who wish to find us. Just look for the Rockbox logo, or shout "Rockbox!" and see who shouts back. :)

We'll be there by 7:00 PM, so come on by. Bring your Rockboxed DAP and some beer money! Laptops are optional.

Hope to see some friendly faces there later today! ;)

Last night was fun. We had a small, enthusiastic turnout. The bar was too loud, the agenda was improvised, the beer was cold, and a good time was had by all. (I think!)

I took some random notes and will share them here for the record.

Folks present:
- LambdaCalculus379 : Rob
- markun : Marcoen
- evilnick : Nick
- Melba (Rob's girlfriend and Rockbox user)
- Davide-NYC : Davide

Players present:
- Archos Recorder
- iPod 5G
- iriver H120-RTC
- iriver H140
- iriver H340
- gigabeat F (one F20 and 2 F40)

We discussed the following:

3.0 release.
- Is a 3.0 release necessary? For some it seems to be.
- What targets qualify at this point? The coldfire targets. Others?
- What bugs exists on these targets that preclude a release? None that I know of now that the recording with disk full bug has been squashed. (actually I should test that myself)

Gigabeat cross sensor.
- Marcoen pointed out that there are 13 sensors on the Gigabeat crosspad. EvilNick and Myself both suffered the 'wierd' feel of the input and suggest that some code improvements would greatly benefit the 'feel' of the gigabeat crosspad.

We talked about the test_codec plugin for a bit.
- leave test_codec.c commented out in the SWCODEC section of the SOURCES file
- fix the 'codec switching causes crash when using test_codec' bug
- we should establish a standard RockBox test audio file as well as download-able test archive
- short discussion of how cool a full transcoder plugin would be. (the hotness)

All present admitted to not caring about Games or Video but agreed that we need a backlight brightness control for mpeg player!  ;)

A few codecs could still use some more optimizing. Namely M4A (am ducking behind my desk)

Rob (LambdaCalc) pointed out an inconsistent bug on the 5G ipod having to do with button response lagging after releasing the hold switch. Rob, post that bug to the tracker!

Some animated DCMA, RIAA, MPAA discussion flared up quickly and then cooled off just as quickly as we returned to the subject at hand. Rockbox!

I kept asking everyone what the most important feature for 2008 should be and the consensus seemed to be Viewports and Scalable Fonts. Marcoen (the only Dev present) mentioned that anything that would abstract the code from the target is good for portability. (paraphrased) And that currently the code was too tied to the individual players and doesn't scale as well as it should. (again, paraphrased)

Rob and Melba would like to see more language files included in RockBox and may take a stab at  getting Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese language files generated.

We talked briefly about the foxconn connector for the gigabeat and how digital I/O and recording on gigabeat would make me consider getting rid of my H120-RTC. Maybe I will investigate disassembling my gigabeat cradle...

I left at 9:30.

Guys, what did I miss?  ???
Marcoen, Nick, post some pics of the tower of RockBox. (T.O.R.)

I guess another nice idea would be to package up a decent ADC in a module that connects to the foxconn connector to allow analog recording also.

Davide: Hi! It's me! The only female present last night.  :P

I'm going to try to find a consistent set of phrases for the Tagalog language file.  The only problem is that we have a small dialect barrier to overcome.

Here's the Wikipedia page describing what I'm talking about.

Davide-NYC: You didn't miss too much. We just talked about some random stuff and our Rockbox experiences.

When markun gets back to the Netherlands later, he said he'll post some pics of our Tower of Rockbox. I also have to send him a New Jersey themed T-shirt, since he didn't get a chance to buy one. :)

peachtoast: Welcome to the forums! I'm going to look at how the language files are laid out so we can at least make a Tagalog language file to start.

And it turns out that we already have a Thai language file, but I don't know if there's a font that supports Thai character sets.

Davide-NYC: FS #7947 (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/7947)

Some other things that went on during the night:

1) Beer... Chimay, Stella Artois, and Guiness were the order of the night.

2) peachtoast went her own unique way with a chocolate martini.

3) The waitress must've been a wee bit scared of so many DAPs in one place. :) And she kept on asking if my iPod was some new model... all because I keep it in an armored shell for protection.

4) The music was too bloody loud! We had to practically scream to be heard!

5) No strong enough wireless access points nearby... I wanted to read the silly Doom and Gameboy threads posted by kids from my Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, just to see how funny they sound while under the influence!

6) evilnick had a very, very cool leather keep case on his iriver H340 (now H360) that peachtoast wants for her own H320.

7) Davide-NYC offered a couple of RTC chips to me to mod a friend's H120, as well as a friend of his who may want to sell off an iAUDIO X5, since I mentioned to him how much I'd love to get one.

8) We talked about some New York related stuff, and also thought about maybe having a larger Rockbox gathering in New York, but this time bringing a few devs and international guys over. We thought a formal Devcon Manhattan would be a great idea! :)

Yes, that's right! We're thinking of a REAL Devcon Manhattan! (But I'll make that a different thread if need be.)

Anyways, we should definitely do this again, guys!
