Title: 512GB MSATA drive in a iRiver H320
Post by: Kool Man on July 18, 2016, 09:56:11 AM
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to know if the parts below will work with my iRiver H320 running on Rockbox 3.13
I want to have a 512GB MSATA drive in my iRiver H320, I would go for the 1TB but they just cost to much at the moment! I have looked on here but all the MSATA drives are different brands to the one I have found which is a KingSpec, I already have a 128GB SSD Kingspec in my player but I've run out of room on a 128GB! so want to upgrade it to a larger size i.e. 512GB, note my H320 use to be a H340 but used a H320 back due to the SSD being the same size a a 20GB HDD but still have the back of my H340 if needed due to this mod!

The adapter for the MSATA drive: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01I018TM6/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2V68EQ0DFLNE3&coliid=IBAENLNFAWS9Q

The adapter for converting ZIF to IDE: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/40-Pin-ZIF-LIF-to-50-Pin-Micro-IDE-1-8-Toshiba-HDD-Adapter-/291255302183?hash=item43d02b3827:g:mRoAAOxyVh5SJg4B

Last of all the MSATA drive itself: https://www.amazon.co.uk/KingSpec-512GB-mSATA-PCI-E-Solid/dp/B01HJA4UVS/ref=sr_1_63?ie=UTF8&qid=1468060380&sr=8-63&keywords=512gb+msata

I just want to know would the ZIF to IDE be small enough to fit into my H320? and would the MSATA drive I found work okay in the MSATA to ZIF?

I will be using my device with Rockbox only!

Please let me know?

Hey,

no this will not work because the ZIF to IDE Adapter is too big.
Please use the search Function.
There are several Threads that discribe what you need.
Here is a Picture of the Adapter you need:
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,28808.0.html (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,28808.0.html)

If i had a source or exact identification of the Adapter I'd tell you  :-\

Please consider if you really need a SSD in your Player.
Neither the Player itself nor the File transfer to or from it could take the advantage of the ssd that it could deliver.
There are also signs that the battery runtime is shorter than using the HDD.

In my view the better solution is using an SD Card for File storage as described here:

No, that adapter will work. I used one.

It is flexible - you just fold it.

Thank you, I  assumed it would not work.
I had one pretty similar Adapter which was not flexible.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for letting me know.

I ended up buying a 512GB SDHC Kingston card, formatted it to FAT32 format, then put Rockbox onto it.

Next I bought a SD card to CF card adapter which supports up to 512GB.

Next I bought a CF card to 50 pin IDE adapter then put it all together.

I can confirm this mod works as it boots into Rockbox fine with 512GB.

I seem to have faster read and write speeds then my SSD and the battery seems to last a little longer, not to sure why that is though!

Is there anyway I can add a picture of it on here?

Please let me know?

How you do that depends on which operating system you use. Generally your OS has tools for formatting disks.
