Title: can i record using my ipod 3rd gen
Post by: johnt234239487 on January 10, 2009, 07:47:44 AM
Simple question: I notice the manual for ipod 3rd gen 15gb (NOT nano) has no section on recording. Is that to say I can't record with that device, or just that the manual hasn't been updated because the 3rd gen is quite old?

Thanks, new poster

The manual for all supported platforms is kept as up-to-date as possible.  I don't think that recording functionality has been implemented yet on iPods.  (And I have no idea whether the 3G hardware supports it.)

thanks. according to the devicechart ipod3g has 'yes' in the recording box.

if rockbox can't do it, can anyone suggest another hack that will?

I wish to record my band using an external mic / line in source. thanks

if rockbox on your ipod doesn't show a recording entry, I guess nobody with the needed hardware got it working. Did you check if there is a recording menu? (in that case the manual is just out of sync)

I'm pretty sure that just means that the hardware is capable, not that it's been implemented in Rockbox.

The only other OS that runs on iPods that I know of is iPodLinux.  I don't know anything about the current state of recording, though.

I can't remember exactly which ones but some can record through the headphone jack and/or docking station.  Check your recording settings for which input they allow.  Unfortunately the way recording is set up right now, you can't remove the Line-In setting without removing recording entirely, so on 2 iPods (again, I can't remember which) this setting is available but not functional.

The iPodLinux wiki says this:
Quote
3G, 4G, Photo, and Color iPods are able to use Mic recording and only 3G iPods are able to use Line In recording.

Mic recording is mono recording through the left channel of the headphone jack.

I can confirm that no recording option is available on ipod 3rd gen using rockbox. This is a blow.
