Title: iPod Nano 2g often panics upon USB plugin, cannot update
Post by: Boolean on September 14, 2019, 08:07:34 PM
TL;DR Rockbox version 341e2c4-120929 throws me a:

*PANIC*
Stkov 6787
pc:08044935C sp:080BE730
     A: 080493B4
bt end

error screen nearly every time it is plugged into USB. Used to do this infrequently and only during sustained periods of file access over USB, but after several failed attempts to update only the rockbox software, not bootloader, it now throws this (or another Stkov 6787 error with different subsequent details) error nearly every time it is plugged into USB. Not sure how to proceed, as it appears my meddling has made this error more frequent and severe. Please advise if you've the time and any ideas. Thank you for reading this far. More details below.

Hello all, new user here. My apologies if this is in the wrong subforum. The issue seems most pertinent to specifically the Nano 2G as I doubt other devices will have this same specific issue. I've searched the forums for my issue but have found nothing which seems pertinent.

I first installed Rockbox many years ago, I believe when the 2g was still considered unstable. Overall my experience was rather positive, other than Rockboy crashing on rare occasions, much to my dismay, and the (at the time quite rare) panic error. Current Rockbox version still on the device according to System menu is: 341e2c4-120929

My current issue is still this white *PANIC* screen (potentially a different panic than before, I have no records of what the error said years ago) that is triggered by almost every attempt to plug in the device since I dug it up yesterday to update it after a year or two of not having used it. The player initially was plugged in for the battery to recharge (battery appears to still be in quite good condition despite its age) without any issue, but any file access for an extended period of time would cause this panic issue, and allowing it to enter the state with backlight off would unmount it as a filesystem while continuing the charge. I tried to update rockbox first via the Rockbox Utility on Windows, then through the AUR community Rockbox Utility on the latest Manjaro (can provide exact version and kernel if necessary, but behavior appears same across Win and Manjaro), and finally via manual install (direct zip extraction to mounted player's root per manual instructions) on Windows. After these failures, the device had become more prone to panics, but I got it plugged in and mounted again, so I tried the rockbox installer once more with the bootloader flash option enabled, and it failed the same way with no noteworthy change in behavior. After a couple more tries of manual install via ZIP extraction, one failure ended with a panic during extraction, and after this attempt almost every plugin to a PC results in the panic nearly immediately. Not sure what to do now, or if the device can still charge through the panics.

A final detail: the device is actually quite stable when not plugged into USB. Functions nearly flawlessly from my limited use over the past day and a half or so. The only way to escape the panic screen is the forced restart from holding menu and select until the apple logo appears.

Will update with any info asked for, or info I deem likely to be of import.

Thanks for any help any of you can provide. I'm going to keep searching the forums for any more helpful info. Take care.

I suggest to start the original firmware and to update your player. I don't know if the bootloader has also changed since your installation is from 2012.

You're a lifesaver, friend. After all these years I completely forgot that flipping the hold switch to "on" during initial reboot boots into stock apple firmware. As soon as you mentioned original firmware the lightbulb clicked on in my head. All my control - f searching through the manual for what to do when USB access isn't working was in vain, lol.

I'll try a full reflash, bootloader and all, from stock OS and report back. Wish me luck.

EDIT: Can't thank you enough, you legend. My iPod took the update from Windows Rockbox Utility just fine when I ran as admin. Tried it on Manjaro first by running sudo /usr/bin/RockboxUtility but got the failure to extract files error. Figured it was a permissions error as the sudo never asked for my passwd (??? not sure why), and the fact that running as admin under Windows might confirm that. Either way, my device appears to be functioning perfectly on the Development build. The new feature to control PC volume via the click wheel is pretty neat.

I'll test it out and make sure it really is fixed, but given it hasn't panic'd on me after a few mins plugged in, I'm pretty convinced it's better.  It would panic or freeze in less than a minute almost every time before.

Thanks again. Thread probably resolved. Will update OP in a day or two with final consensus of resolved or not.

Have a good one.
